Chung Sung-Jun, Getty Images Korn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer has been involved with his side project, Fear and the Nervous System , for a few years now, and finally audiences will get a chance to see the band in person. Shaffer is starting off small, booking four West Coast shows with hopes of more down the road. The guitarist says, “I’ve had these songs for quite a while, and I can’t wait to share them with the world live. Fear and the Nervous System is unlike anything that I’ve ever done, and it’s an incredible feeling to tour behind it.” Shaffer handpicked his band, with Faith No More bassist Billy Gould, Bad Religion drummer Brooks Wackerman, Repeater vocalist Steve Krolikowski, Korn touring keyboardist Zac Baird and Leopold Ross on guitar. The group’s debut album is currently available online . The tour launches Oct. 13 in Redondo Beach, Calif., at Brixton and the other three shows are also SoCal-based with appearances in Agoura Hills (Oct. 14, Canyon Club), Bakersfield (Oct. 19, B Ryder’s), and West Hollywood (Oct. 20, Roxy Theater). No Comments »Slash Postpones Los Angeles Show Due to Ailing Singer Myles Kennedy
October 3rd, 2012 Metalkult Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Slash ‘s Los Angeles date will have to wait as singer Myles Kennedy has come down ill. As a result, the group has postponed tonight’s (Oct. 3) show at the Wiltern until Dec. 2. “We want to be 100% for this gig and we’re just not at this moment,” said the guitarist. “We’ll be back Dec. 2 in fighting form. See you then.” Kennedy added, “My apologies to everyone who was planning on coming out to the show tonight. I promise to make it up to you when we return in a few months.” The Los Angeles show would have been a special one for Slash as it would have been a homecoming performance. Earlier this year, the guitar great was saluted with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame , and he’s previously been honored at the Sunset Strip Music Festival as well for his contributions to the Los Angeles music scene. There has been no confirmation of any change in Slash’s plans to appear on Conan tomorrow night (Oct. 4), but with Kennedy ailing, it’s worth monitoring. October 3rd, 2012 Metalkult YouTube Get Slayer ‘s Kerry King and Anthrax ‘s Scott Ian in front of a camera together, and all you have to do is get out of the way while two hard rock legends talk — which is exactly what the producers at Fuse.tv did recently when King and Ian arrived in the studio to discuss their recent Metal Masters 4 concert. Ian and King touched on a number of subjects (or, as Fuse put it when titling the clip, ‘Scott Ian and Kerry King Talk Arrests, Booze & Strippers’), but some of their most heartfelt discussion centered around Dimebag Darrell . And while Darrell’s life ended in tragedy, the conversation focused on happier (and, it must be said, hazier) memories of the former Pantera guitarist’s life. “My normal rules went out the window when I played with those guys,” recalled Ian. “I would try to keep it to a minimum and say, ‘I’m not doing more than three shots with you before I play.’ But then they’re walking onstage and handing me drinks in the middle of a set or pouring ‘em down your throat. Any time I toured with those guys was the drunkest I’ve been in my life.” King chimed in, saying, “[Drinking] just made [Dimebag] loose. It got him in the vibe to play.” Ian went on to discuss an epic night at a strip club with Darrell and some other famous friends, including Gene Simmons of Kiss and Motley Crue ‘s Tommy Lee : “We ended up in a private room and for three or four hours I’m sitting next to Dime with a stripper on my lap constantly. There never wasn’t a girl on my lap and there was always someone refilling my drinks. I remember saying to somebody afterward, ‘Who paid for that? October 3rd, 2012 Metalkult Reprise Deftones got fans excited for one of 2012′s most anticipated albums, ‘Koi No Yokan,’ by recently unleashing the awesome track ‘ Leathers .’ Today happens to represent another monument for ‘Koi No Yokan,’ as Deftones have released ‘Tempest’ as the first official single from the album. ‘Tempest’ is purely and undoubtedly Deftones, as singer Chino Moreno begins the track with a drifting vocal line. Deftones constantly balance beauty and aggression in ‘Tempest,’ lending a slightly schizophrenic feel to the song, as the development of ‘Tempest’ takes many spikes and dips. This first single from ‘Koi No Yokan’ maintains the fact that no band on the planet sounds like Deftones. The little nuances that have existed during the band’s career are still firmly in tact with ‘Tempest,’ which heightens our excitement for the Nov. 13 release date for ‘Koi No Yokan.’ Deftones are currently on a North American tour with Scars on Broadway, which features Daron Malakian from System of a Down. October 3rd, 2012 Metalkult avclub.com GWAR recently took part in A.V. Club’s 25-song experiment where they invite established acts to cover a track chosen by readers. As a part of the ‘Undercover’ music series, GWAR were given the choice as to what song they’d like to cover for a one-time-only performance, and of course, the outer space shredders chose to jam on the Kansas classic ‘Carry on My Wayward Son.’ Yes, we’re serious. GWAR played ‘Carry on My Wayward Son’ for the A.V. Club session, complete with brand new member Pustulus Maximus . Before tackling the ’70s rock classic, GWAR front-thing Oderus Urungus had a few words to say about ‘Carry on My Wayward Son.’ “I hadn’t even heard it until they [the rest of GWAR] played it for me the other day. I was convinced that they had written it, and I was like, “What are you guys doing writing that derivative crappy ’70s crap crap crap rock. We’re not playing that song ever again!” Urungus continues, “Kansas; there was that guy in the band who had hair like a giant pyramid, remember him? He would have gone up like Chernobyl if you’d hold a lighter up to his head, I’ll tell you that. Kansas was a big part of a big part of music where bands were often named after geographical locations, and lets hope that that never happens again, because quite frankly, those bands suck!” GWAR launch into a pretty awesome rendition of the track, inserting their own punk-infused metal phallus into the song, which ended up sounding sort of like Bad Relgiion. The singer has revealed that there will be a special edition of the ‘ Born Villain ‘ album coming this fall. While the vocalist didn’t reveal an exact release date, he did tell Billboard it would be “shortly before the holiday” and that it would come with two or possibly three additional tracks and special packaging. Manson added, “They’re not just acoustic versions or demos or stuff like that. They’re really good songs that were going to go on the album, but I didn’t want the album to be too long. I knew there would be the opportunity to use them for something.” The singer says he expects the deluxe edition packaging to come with additional artwork that may come in book form. Meanwhile, Manson has returned to the road for the fall months, sharing stages with Rob Zombie on the ‘ Twins of Evil ‘ co-headlining tour. Manson says, “It’s just an obvious tour. I’m surprised we haven’t done it before, but we hadn’t. I think it’s gonna be great.” He adds, “[I think it’s] a good match because he does the comic book/slasher element of horror or whatever you might call our cinematic sort of view of music, and I handle the more psychological and political. October 3rd, 2012 Metalkult Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com At present, there are two versions of Queensryche as a result of Geoff Tate ‘s ousting from the band and the inability of the courts to sort out all the legalities as of yet. Tate initially filed an injunction attempting to keep the rest of the band from using the name, but did not succeed. Now his former bandmates are turning the tables trying to keep Tate from doing the same with his reconstructed lineup . Billboard reports that a motion for partial summary judgment was filed Sept. 21 in Washington state’s King County Superior Court. Michael Wilton, Scott Rockenfield, and Eddie Jackson – Tate’s longtime bandmates – are asking the court to declare that the singer “has no right to the Queensryche band name, marks and media assets since he has no grant of authority from the TriRyche Corporation that owns them.” They request that unless Tate is able to succeed in dissolving the band’s organizations legally that he should not be allowed usage of the imagery. The singer does have a suit against the TriRyche Organization that also claims that they illegally fired him earlier this year and by doing so will do irreparable harm to the band’s brand name. Jackson told Billboard in a statement, “The recent announcement of a second Queensryche lineup, upcoming tour plans and new musical direction has caused some confusion for our fans. This confusion has caused Scott, Michael and I to file a motion against our former vocalist to prevent him from using the name Queensryche. Until now, we have never asked the court to intervene on our behalf but it seems like we have no choice now in light of Geoff’s recent actions. We thank the fans who have been supporting us through this whole process and can’t wait to unleash the one true Queensryche to the masses.” Tate recently revealed he had recruited Quiet Riot bassist Rudy Sarzo, Ratt drummer Bobby Blotzer, former Megadeth guitarist Glen Drover, ex-Queensryche guitarist Kelly Gray and keyboardist Randy Gane to fill out his lineup. The singer has a new solo record coming later this year and recently announced plans to tour with the new lineup, though it has not been revealed when those dates will take place.
