Liz Ramanand, Loudwire / Mary Ouellette, shewillshootyou.com Metallica may not be releasing new music until 2014 , but that doesn’t mean you won’t still hear them next year. In fact, the band has just announced a headlining appearance at the 2013 Rock in Rio festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Joining Metallica as headliners are fellow metal mavens Iron Maiden and classic rockers Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. This will be Metallica’s sixth time playing the festival, and they’re set to perform on Sept. 19. Pre-sale tickets will be available Oct. 23 for those who have Rock in Rio membership cards, which are exclusively for Brazilian residents. Further information can be found here . For those outside of Brazil, there will be an international ticket sale beginning in April 2013. At present, the only other shows on Metallica’s schedule beside Rock in Rio is their appearances at Australia’s Soundwave Festival early next year and at New Orleans’ Voodoo Music Festival on Oct. 27 of this year. The band recently stepped in to headline Voodoo when Green Day bowed out as frontman Billie Joe Armstrong continues rehab for substance abuse. Iron Maiden, meanwhile, have a number of European festival dates scheduled for June and July of 2013. Their headlining slot on Rock in Rio will take place on the closing night, Sept. 22. Deftones Unveil Lyric Video for ‘Tempest’
Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com As anticipation builds for the Nov. 13 release of ‘ Koi No Yokan ,’ Deftones have released a lyric video for the album’s first single ‘Tempest’ (watch below). The band has also launched a pre-order bundle for ‘Koi No Yokan’ that includes the album on CD, a digital copy of the album, a download of ‘Tempest,’ a ‘Koi No Yokan’ album cover t-shirt and a 24 inch by 24 inch lithograph. 100 randomly selected fans will have their lithograph signed by the band. The package is available via deftones.com for $39.99. Singer Chino Moreno talked about how the dynamics will play out on their new album in a recent interview. He told NME , “It’s not a super fast or slow record. It’s very dynamic. Some of my favorite things about Deftones are the dynamics. Yes, we’re a heavy band, but we’re not just in-your-face aggro the whole time, punching you in the face. There’s a lot of aggression in some of the music, but there’s also this very soothing element where there’s a lot of soundscapes rather than attack, attack, attack the whole time.” Deftones are in the midst of a headlining tour with Scars on Broadway that wraps up Oct. 30 in New York. They’ll play some dates in Mexico and South America before returning to the U.S. to pick up the tour again Nov. 14. Last week at the San Francisco show the band invited bassist Chi Cheng’s son Gabe onstage to play the song ‘Root’ with them. Chi has been mostly in a coma since a 2008 car accident. Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris: I Think We’ve Got Another Five Years in Us
George De Sota, Getty Images Iron Maiden are among the pioneers of heavy metal, but despite the fact that they are still going strong, bassist Steve Harris sees an expiration date approaching for the band. He tells The Quietus , “I don’t know about [us playing for another] ten years. I think we’ve certainly got another five years in us, but it’s hard to say.” The bassist says that health definitely factors into their future equation, adding, “As you get older, it gets doubly hard to keep yourself fit and in shape. We do work really hard on doing that. We’d be selling ourselves and everyone else short if we didn’t, so we look after ourselves.” Harris, an avid soccer fan, says he’s given up playing the sport for the most part. He adds, “I’ve had so many problems with my back that I can only play the odd match here or there. Unfortunately it’s five years since I’ve played a full season of football and that’s something that I miss a lot. But I had to make a decision. I play a lot of tennis.” With Harris seeing the end in sight, he’s taking advantage of his time remaining in rock to do what he wants. Earlier this fall, he released his solo disc, ‘ British Lion ,’ which has been in the works for over a decade. Harris has gone in a more hard rock direction for the disc, and recently stated that the material was not “throwaway Iron Maiden stuff.” He’s currently gauging the response before deciding whether to tour in support of the effort. Vines Frontman Craig Nicholls Arrested After Allegedly Attacking Parents and Police Officer
Chris Hyde, Getty Images Craig Nicholls, frontman for the Vines, has been arrested in Australia after an apparent bizarre attack on his parents. The vocalist, who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, reportedly punched his mother twice in the head and injured a police officer who attempted to detain him. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the rocker attempted to flee when police arrived on the scene and officers eventually used capsicum spray to subdue the singer. Inspector Robert Duncan told the paper, “He tried to evade police and [a] violent struggle ensued. A police officer suffered grazes, cuts and bruises to both elbows and knees and was treated at St. George Hospital.” Nicholls was charged with five offenses, including two counts of domestic assault, stalking or intimidation, resisting arrest and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. His parents took out an apprehended violence order against the singer, which is the Australian equivalent to a restraining order for those who feel they are in danger of bodily harm. The Vines were part of the garage rock explosion of the early 2000s that brought acts like the White Stripes, the Hives and the Strokes to prominence. However, Nicholls’ erratic behavior became an issue and eventually he was diagnosed with Asperger’s. The group’s ability to tour extensively has been hampered as a result, but they still managed to put out several records in the years that followed. Their fifth album, ‘Future Primitive,’ arrived last year. [button href=”http://loudwire.com/musician-mug-shots/” title=”Next: See Musician Mugshots” align=”center”]
Clutch Reveal New Album Title + Dates for Late 2012 Tour
Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Clutch have been quiet as of late, but the band is ready to emerge from the studio with their latest chugging opus, ‘Earth Rocker.’ The group just completed the effort, and they currently have circled March 2013 on their calendar to release the disc. Singer Neil Fallon tells Antiquiet , “Last minute overdubs are fun — Harmonicas, tambourines (yes, we use those), claps, the odd backing vocal. Recording can be monotonous, so those unintended moments can be a lot of fun. It’s kind of like kindergarten music class, but with beer. And sometimes the spontaneity of a last ditch idea breathes a lot of life back into a song that we’ve been beating up for weeks on end. A looming deadline can be a great muse!” As for the sound, the frontman adds, “It has a lot in common with ‘Blast Tyrant’ in that Machine’s production techniques are really unique. It differs from ‘Blast Tyrant’ and a lot of other Clutch records in that, overall, the songs are faster and concise.” With the record ready to go, Clutch will get their live chops in order. The band has booked a handful of late October/early November shows in the Midwest, and will also take part in a late year holiday tour in the period between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. After that, the group will head to Europe for January and February dates before ‘Earth Rocker’s’ March release.
