Liz Ramanand, Loudwire After Metal Masters 4 in New York, Phil Anselmo was back in the ‘Big Apple’ for an ass-kicking show with Down at the Best Buy Theater Friday night (Sept. 28). Support for the standout show included Saint Vitus, haarp and Warbeast . As the crowd started multiple “Down” chants, the band graced the stage and kicked off their performance with ‘Eyes South.’ They also went on to play a few new tracks from their latest disc ‘ Down IV Part I – The Purple EP ’ such as their single ‘Witchtripper,’ ‘Misfortune Teller’ and ‘Open Coffins.’ The crowd unleashed as they performed fan favorites like ‘Temptation’s Wings,’ ‘Lifer,’ ‘Ghosts Along the Mississippi,’ ‘Stone the Crow,’ and ‘Bury Me in Smoke’ among numerous others. Frontman Phil Anselmo exuded passion and vigor onstage as he looked fans eye-to-eye, transfixing their attention every step of the way. The force of the band onstage is a powerful one with the hard-hitting riffs of Pepper Keenan and Kirk Weinstein along with the deep bass lines of Pat Bruders and the thunderous percussion of Jimmy Bower behind the skins. Not to mention the chemistry between all of the members of Down onstage is infectious to say the least. Another band who was welcomed warmly by the East Coast crowd was Saint Vitus, who gave one hell of a performance as fans opened up a mosh pit and shook the foundation of the Best Buy Theater. To see metal legends like Saint Vitus onstage was quite a treat and watching lead guitarist Dave Chandler shred it up with his teeth was the cherry on top. Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Earlier this week Nonpoint and Taproot rocked an intimate show at New York City’s Gramercy Theater and brought some serious force with two powerful sets. Headliners Nonpoint are touring in support of their upcoming self-titled album due out Oct. 9. They rocked out a couple new tracks from the forthcoming disc, such as their single ‘Left for You’ and ‘I Said It.’ They also delivered such fan favorites as ‘Mind Trip,’ ‘Broken Bones,’ ‘Miracle,’ ‘What a Day,’ and ‘Bullet With a Name’ among numerous others, bringing the passion and sweat onstage throughout. Frontman Elias Soriano definitely had a captivated audience, as the crowd was moving throughout. Taproot also gave a vigorous performance and for someone who has had a rough year filled with health issues , frontman Stephen Richards sounded impeccable and was on top of his game. With his charismatic facial expressions and jumping rope with the microphone chord, his stage presence and the band’s overall energy resonated throughout the venue. Not to mention the “Let’s Go Rangers” chant Richards started also really got fans going and kept them in their corner for the rest of the night. The band performed new tracks such as their singles ‘No Surrender’ and ‘The Everlasting’ from their latest disc ‘The Episodes’ which dropped earlier this year. Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Fans turned out in droves for the New York City stop of the ‘Epic Kings & Idols’ tour featuring Katatonia , Devin Townsend Project , Paradise Lost and Stolen Babies. Katatonia are out in support of their ninth full length record ‘Dead End Kings’ and they kicked off their set with ‘Dead Letters’ from the new album. The Swedish metalers also performed new tracks like ‘Buidings,’ ‘Lethean’ and ‘The Racing Heart’ along with older cuts ‘Teargas,’ ‘Walking by a Wire,’ ‘My Twin’ and more. Devin Townsend and the rest of his band had the most energetic set of the night and put on one of the best shows of the year. Townsend has one hell of a voice and he belted out songs such as ‘Supercrush,’ ‘Juular,’ ‘Vampira,’ as well as numerous others. The band also showcased the new album ‘Epicloud’ with performances of ‘Kingdom,’ ‘Lucky Animals’ and ‘Grace.’ Townsend is known for his fun stage presence, and he threw smiles and funny faces to the welcoming and enthusiastic crowd. The Devin Townsend Project is one group of musicians that cannot be missed in concert. Paradise Lost performed a vigorous set that kicked off with ‘Enchantment,’ ‘Erased’ and ‘The Enemy.’ They also played the title track of their latest record ‘Tragic Idol’ and another new tune ‘In This We Dwell,’ as well as older favorites ‘Faith Divides Us’ and ‘Say Just Words.’ Stolen Babies opened up the show and began the night of madness with their carnivalesque, avant garde metal set, which fans really dug. Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Some of the faces may have changed, but Orgy and frontman Jay Gordon are still rocking it as solid as ever. The band returned to the Roxy in West Hollywood, Calif., Sunday night (Sept. 23) with a set that provided the perfect showcase for the band’s new single, ‘ Grime of the Century .’ The veteran rockers haven’t released a record since 2004, with Gordon eventually tiring of the hiatus, reclaiming the band name and re-staffing the group with former members of Deadsy and the Start among others. With the new lineup featuring guitarists Carlton Bost and Ashburn Miller, bassist Nic Speck and drummer Jamie Miller, Orgy are ready to re-establish themselves in the live setting after spending their recent months in the studio. The group got things rolling with tracks like ‘Dissension,’ ’107,’ and ‘Suckerface’ all showing the new band member’s chops while Gordon was like a live wire bounding with endless energy across the Roxy stage. After getting the audience worked up with the older favorites, the group decided debut their new single live for the first time. The good news for the band is that ‘Grime of the Century’ received one of the biggest responses of the night. The industrial rocker fit right in with the band’s past works, translated well to the stage, and even inspired a circle pit to break out. In addition, a film crew were on hand to capture the song’s live debut. With ‘Grime of the Century,’ the Orgy re-activation seems to be heading in the right direction. The band continued the momentum by following with such favorites as ‘Fiction (Dreaming in Digital),’ ‘Opticon,’ and ‘Eva’ before finishing out the night with their biggest single, their cover of New Order’s ‘Blue Monday.’ During the encore performance, Gordon felt so inspired by the audience energy he decided to take part, leaving the stage and joining the crowd while singing the song. He even boldly ventured into the circle pit for a moment before finally making his way back to the stage. As of yet, there are no finalized details on a full Orgy record, but with ‘Grime of the Century’ leading the way, the comeback is off on the right foot. Marshall Over the weekend, the lineage of Marshall Amps, as well as its last founder, Jim Marshall, was celebrated at the ‘Marshall: 50 Years of Loud’ event. Held at Wembley Arena in London, ’50 Years of Loud’ showcased an unparalleled lineup of musicians, all known for their electric acts. Members of Iron Maiden , Slayer , Motorhead , Judas Priest , Deep Purple , Slipknot , Black Label Society , along with guitar masters Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani paid their respects to Marshall by performing an incredible collection of rock masterpieces. With musicians constantly interchanging throughout the night, songs such as Iron Maiden’s ‘Flight of Icarus,’ Motorhead’s ‘Ace of Spades,’ Pantera’s ‘Mouth For War,’ along with various Black Sabbath and Judas Priest songs were unleashed by the slew of rock and metal legends. Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Godsmack have always been vocal about how much of an influence Pantera had on their career and so it seemed only fitting that when the 2012 Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival rolled into Pantera’s home state of Texas that the band would pay homage to them at some point during the night. It didn’t take long to get that ball rolling as Sully Erna and Godsmack were joined center stage by Mike Mushok and Aaron Lewis of Staind . Together they ripped into ‘This Love’ from Pantera’s 1992 release ‘Vulgar Display of Power,’ a disc that coincidentally just secured the No. 1 position in Loudwire’s Top 10 Albums of 1992 proving what an impact it made on both musicians and music fans alike. The stage quickly became an all-star cast of the 2012 Class of Uproar Fest with members of Fozzy , P.O.D. and more providing gang vocals during the chorus on one side of the stage while Rita Haney, the longtime girlfriend of late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott , joined in on the other side of the stage, making for quite a special metal moment. Erna closed out the song, saying, “Rest in peace Dimebag Darrell, we miss you.” Fans in the crowd managed to capture the performance from several different angles. Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Slash and his gang are on a nonstop trek in promotion of their latest album ‘Apocalyptic Love’ and New York fans definitely showed them some love Tuesday night, Sept. 18, at Hammerstein Ballroom. Slash featuring Myles Kennedy (of Alter Bridge) & The Conspirators rocked the crowd with tunes that spread the span of Slash’s shredding career. Their set kicked off with ‘Halo’ off of the new record and they went on to play other fresh tracks such as ‘Bad Rain,’ ‘No More Heroes,’ ‘Not For Me’ as well as singles ‘Standing in the Sun’ and ‘You’re a Lie.’ They also performed a few songs from Slash’s first solo disc, including ‘Back From Cali,’ ‘Starlight,’ ‘We’re All Gonna Die’ and ‘Ghost.’ During the course of the night, Myles Kennedy belted out Guns N’ Roses classics ‘Night Train,’ ‘Rocket Queen,’ ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine,’ ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ and the set closer ‘Paradise City.’ The Velvet Revolver tune ‘Slither’ made its way on the set list as well as the song ‘Been There Lately’ from Slash’s Snakepit. Slash to a guitar is the same as Myles Kennedy to a microphone — both are impeccable at what they do and to see them together onstage is an absolute treat. Speaking of a treat, Foxy Shazam took the stage to warm up the crowd and just seeing this band onstage causes excessive perspiration. Frontman Eric Nally sported a new blonde look as he sang, flipped, somersaulted, danced and bounced all over the stage. After a couple of concert goers shouted ‘You Suck’ and called Nally a derogatory name, the frontman gave them a few choice words Foxy Shazam style and proceeded to do his signature deed of smoking multiple cigarettes onstage — provided by the crowd members, of course. Every member of the band is constantly moving to the point where if you blink you may feel that you have missed a vital part of their set…chances are you probably did.
