Facebook: Roy Mayorga (Stone Sour) Stone Sour are enjoying some of their greatest success to date with the two-part album ‘House of Gold & Bones,’ and drummer Roy Mayorga is very happy to be part of it. Back in 2011, Mayorga suffered a stroke and there was concern about whether or not he would be able to continue, but the musician is happy to report he’s recovered. Mayorga tells the Lehigh Valley Morning Call that doctors revealed that his years of violent head-banging led to a dissected artery that caused the stroke. The drummer added that there was “a good seven, eight months” where he was not playing music, and that he was having trouble moving his left side. But rather than replace him, the group called off their tour and waited a year while he recovered. Speaking about his bandmates, Mayorga stated, “That’s incredible. I mean, that’s a lot to be said for them. Those guys are truly my brothers, for them to do something like that … Most bands would have gotten somebody else to play drums, but they didn’t.” Over time, the improvement began. “I got off the meds and got the confidence again to play drums and got behind the kit and then started recording this new album,” explained Mayorga. “Almost two years later, I’m pretty much back to normal, and it’s a miracle, man, I gotta say. I thank God and the universe and lucky stars I’m still here today. I’m just glad that’s over with and I’m able to still walk and play drums and be here with my family.” As for the new record, the drummer says this was the most collaborative effort the band has enjoyed to date. “We all wrote everything together and we all brought songs individually to the table, but once we got them all, we just took them apart and put them back together again and each and every one of us put our own stamp on it,” explained Mayorga. The first part of the ‘ House of Gold & Bones ‘ album is out now, with the latter half expected in April . Kevin Winter, Getty Images Rage Against the Machine ‘s Tom Morello has continued his video series where he answers fan questions and in his latest installment he revealed a long-secret piece of trivia from the band’s history — the identity of the naked guy in the ‘How I Could Just Kill a Man’ video. In the clip, the offending naked guy is briefly shown standing next to singer Zack de la Rocha, and more than a few fans have asked how that piece of video footage found its way into the clip and why. Morello revealed, “It was a friend of ours who toured with us named MJ Plenty and at the time on that particular tour we were doing this grim, I wouldn’t call it hazing, but we had this outstanding $250 per diem money that was always sitting on the desk. And then someone in the band or someone in the crew would come up with a different task and if you did the task you got the $250.” The guitarist recalls that Plenty accepted the bet, which for that night entailed him going onstage naked, with a few other conditions that needed to be met to achieve the goal. Morello says, “He’s not just naked, he’s naked with his wiener tucked. It you do it frame-by-frame, you’ll see that he has a wiener-tuck going on. And I’m not sure if he’s singing the Maynard [James Keenan] part of ‘Know Your Enemy’ or if he’s just onstage during that part of ‘Know Your Enemy’ while Zack is singing to him, but part of the deal was that he couldn’t laugh. He couldn’t break character, he had to be … stoic. He did it. He got the $250 and he is forever immortalized in the ‘How I Could Just Kill a Man’ video.” With Rage pretty much on break at this point after reissuing a 20th anniversary edition of their debut album last year, Morello is finding other things to keep him occupied. The guitarist says he’s currently working on a new Nightwatchman album and will play a show at New York City’s Lincoln Center Feb. 16. Schecter Guitar Research Schecter guitars and Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx have teamed up to create a new model of bass. The guitar company is planning to reveal the ‘Schecter Sixx’ signature series bass at the winter NAMM conference in Anaheim, Calif. on Jan. 26. Rock guitarists and bassists with a little extra cash in their pockets have been flocking to Schecter Guitar Research for decades to harness the company’s signature sound. Schecter has created guitars for Avenged Sevenfold ‘s Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance , Disturbed ‘s Dan Donegan and many more. The company is planning to release many new signature models in the near future, but the first of 2013 will be the Nikki Sixx ‘Schecter Sixx.’ “It was an exciting and creative process to work with Schecter on the new Schecter Sixx Signature Series Bass,” says Sixx. “It was important to all of us to design a bass that would feel right as well as sound amazing in the hands of all players, not just me. Every detail about the new Schecter Sixx comes from all of our collective experiences – whether it’s my 30 years of playing live and recording orSchecter’s unprecedented standards for making quality instruments for players of all genres. Simply said, this bass rocks!” Schecter’s Executive Vice President, Marc LaCorte adds, “I really felt as if we instantly gelled and were looking to accomplish the same goal with this project. Cayne: Official Facebook Page Sad news for metal fans everywhere: founding Lacuna Coil guitarist Claudio Leo, who also played for Italian metal band Cayne, has passed away. Leo was an essential member of Lacuna Coil in the band’s early stages, helping form the massive group in the mid-90s when they were known as Sleep of Right. The guitarist remained in Lacuna Coil until 1998, lending his talents to the band’s self-titled EP, which was released via Century Media Records the same year Leo and Lacuna Coil went their separate ways. After leaving Lacuna Coil, Leo and fellow ex-Lacuna Coil guitarist Raffaele Zagaria began Cayne in 1999, releasing their debut album, ‘Old Faded Pictures,’ in 2001. Cayne’s most recent release is the ‘Addicted EP,’ and the band is scheduled to release a new album on Valentine’s Day of this year. Lacuna Coil vocalist Cristina Scabbia posted a heartfelt statement on her official Facebook fan page, paying tribute to her former bandmate: It’s with deep sadness that I inform you all know that our dear friend and ex guitar player Claudio Leo left us. My deepest condolences to his family, close friends and the band Cayne. You will always be remembered for your strength and positivity. We love you, Claudio. Cayne also memorialized their fallen guitarist with a simple update: Goodbye Claudio. Rest in peace, brother. No cause of death has been revealed as of this posting, although it has been reported that Leo was suffering from a serious illness recently. There’s nothing too out of the ordinary for the first video from the band known as Newsted as ‘Soldierhead’ is a traditional performance clip, but it packs a powerful punch. Jason Newsted and his new group offer up a rapid fire, hard-hitting performance of ‘Soldierhead’ that shows exactly what they’re all about and serves as a bit of a proving ground before the band ever hits the concert stage. After watching the video, there should be increased anticipation for whenever Newsted takes the stage. The bassist-frontman exclusively tells Loudwire, “I think [‘Soldierhead’] probably came to me in like 10 minutes and I got the main riff down and then the lyrics just came to me and I said ‘this is going to be the one’ and I had it done by that night and it just showed up, because I keep chasing it, man.” As expected with that title, the track comes from a particular point of view. Newsted added, “‘Soldierhead’ is for all of our military service personnel guys and girls … You hear such crazy stories about all of that and I met so many thousands of soldiers in my life traveling around the world and they’ve always been so supportive of the metal, so that’s my tip of the hat to them. Wind-Up Cleveland rock veterans Filter have announced that Wind-up Records will be the new home for their sixth full-length album, tentatively titled ‘Gurney and the Burning Books.’ The album is slated to drop in May, while the disc’s first single will hit the airwaves in March. Filter have released their share of anthems throughout the last two decades, earning their spot as one of ’90s rock’s most definitive bands. For those who remember when MTV actually played music videos, it was a common and welcomed occurrence when ‘Hey Man, Nice Shot,’ ‘Welcome to the Fold’ or ‘Take a Picture’ would pop onto your television screen. Founding member and frontman Richard Patrick will lead with the record’s writing duties alongside guitarist Jonny Radtke and collaborator Marlette. A Perfect Circle / Puscifer drummer Jeff Friedl will also contribute to the new Filter album along with additional drummer Elias Mallin and bassist Phil Buckman. Wind-up Records President Ed Vetri shared his excitement about signing Filter in a new press release. “We’re thrilled to welcome Richard Patrick and Filter into the Wind-up family,” says Vetri. “This is a successful band with an extremely impressive body of work and I’m happy to say that based on the demos I’ve heard, this new album could very well be their best to date.
