Wendy Dio Says Early Detection Appears To Be Helping Tony Iommi’s Cancer Recovery

Gareth Cattermole, Getty Images (2) The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund recently had a chance to honor Dio’s longtime friend and bandmate, Tony Iommi , who himself has been battling lymphoma over the past year. Dio’s widow, Wendy, tells Loudwire that Iommi’s early detection has been key in his recovery, and it may have even been her husband’s death that led to the Black Sabbath guitarist getting checked out. Wendy tells us, “Well you know Tony was struggling with his own cancer, and hopefully … it’s in remission, which [would be] fantastic. And that’s early detection again, that was early. Maybe if Ronnie hadn’t passed away, [Iommi] wouldn’t have gotten checked early. We don’t know, but that was early detection, and [the ceremony] was great because he’s been through so much this year and to honor him, that was great. And for Geezer [Butler] to give him the award was very, very special. All of honorees are special.” Wendy stressed the importance of cancer education, especially for men who tend not to visit the doctor as frequently. She added, “We mainly deal with men’s cancers and we find that men don’t get checked. Women are very good. Men have to be drug there, but we’re trying to make awareness that early detection saves lives and for your loved ones to save their lives by getting checked.” The Halloween ‘Spooktacular’ event featured awards named after Dio songs, with Iommi taking home the ‘King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ award. In addition, the evening provided plenty of music, with a large portion provided by the Dio Disciples lineup of Tim “Ripper” Owens and Oni Logan, guitarist Craig Goldy, bassist Bjorn Englen, keyboardist Scott Warren, and drummer Simon Wright, with members of Buckcherry , Anthrax , Whitesnake, and White Lion sitting in as well. With the annual awards event behind them, the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout cancer fund is currently focused on a massive guitar auction with items donated by Metallica , Iron Maiden , the Foo Fighters , Bon Jovi , Eddie Van Halen , and many more. The event takes place Dec. 1 through Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif. For more info, check here . Stay tuned for a full interview with Wendy Dio and Geezer Butler’s wife, Gloria, about the guitar auction. Megadeth Frontman Dave Mustaine Chalks Up Obama Re-Election Comments as ‘Stage Fodder’

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Barack Obama has been re-elected president and Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine is still an American citizen. The rocker, who made headlines earlier this year suggesting he might move out of the country if the president was re-elected, says his comments were primarily “stage fodder.” The vocalist tells Atlantic City Weekly about his Obama commentary in front of a Singapore audience, “A lot of that was stage fodder … I was just there marveling how beautiful Singapore is and I started thinking about how our nation is changing and I don’t know if we can handle all of the taxation. I know years ago that in England the taxes got so out of control that people left and I can see it happening here. There could be a mass exodus here.” Mustaine went on to add, “There are quite a few musicians who are blessed enough to be making $250,000 or more a year and they will be taxed. I think what will happen is that bands will be dying left and right. What’s happening now is that everything America has been built on will be destroyed.” Regardless of what happens politically, Mustaine says, “I think life will continue on. We’re a strong nation, no matter who is in the White House.” The vocalist has been quite the lightning rod in the past year for some of his comments made onstage and in interviews. However, Mustaine said in a recent interview he’s learned his lesson about voicing his thoughts. “You can’t joke around very much anymore without people misinterpreting what you’re saying,” says the vocalist. “You know, I probably should have said things differently. I probably should’ve skipped that altogether … I learned a valuable lesson from all of this stuff.” Recently, Megadeth have been revisiting their ‘Countdown to Extinction’ album on tour, and Mustaine says the feelings now are similar to when the album was first recorded. He explains, “What’s similar about now and then is that it’s a difficult time in our country. There’s extreme tension now and there was extreme tension then. Maybe that’s why ‘Countdown to Extinction’ is still resonant today.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/best-megadeth-songs/” title=”Next: 10 Best Megadeth Songs” align=”center”]

Refused Reflect on 2012 Reunion + Announce Hometown Finale

Refused – Official Site When we reflect on 2012, one of the better reunions to take place will have been that of Swedish hardcore punk outfit Refused . However, the band has revealed that the time has come for the reunion to wind down, and they’ve decided that the best place to do it would be their hometown in Umea, Sweden at the Exel Arena on Dec. 15. The group made the most of their time back together, hitting just about every major festival you can imagine. Their touring took them to such festivals as  Coachella , Rock am Ring, Roskilde, Groezrock, Download, Primavera Sound, Fuji Rock, and Pukkelpop among others. Plus, they made a rare television appearance on ‘ Late Night with Jimmy Fallon .’ As the band prepare to say farewell, they decided to put their thoughts into words and offered this note of reflection on their Facebook page: So there were those years right after school, when you were 15 and pissed off and everyone thought you were a loser and you ran around with the other weirdos, generating weirdness and little else. And there were those years when what set you apart from the others become a fixation and a lifestyle and you had a band and people talked about what you did but you were so used to being weird you just lumped them in with the rest of the slanderers. Then there were those years when the ideas you’d clung to through late adolescence were beginning to ring hollow and you got more and more confused and destructive and the band broke up and you had rent to pay. That was among the tougher years. And then slowly, over a span of time, you began to sort yourself out and your friends started making sensible decisions in their lives and it suddenly began to seem like most of you were gonna be ok. And then there was the year when you stopped being a petulent kid and you got your favorite musicians together in a room again and decided that you were gonna accept the love of thousands of listeners, accept the success that was waiting there to be had and just in general enjoy being appreciated for the exact same qualities that made you a freak to your contemporaries in your teens. This was one of the better years. And now it is coming to a close. It’s been kind to us. And that old punkrock golem “The shape of punk to come” has done good. The hatchet is buried, 1998 is not such a terrible memory for us anymore. We’re going home. And we’re doing it in style. With old friends and new acquaintances in tow we’re gonna take over our old hometown Umeå for one more night, just because we can. On the 15th of december at the Exel arena we’ll be sharing the stage with these magnificent comrades: Randy, a band of punkrock bandidos from the north who we befriended years before we even were Refused, Two White Horses, an excellent sister/brother-duo from Sävar, both of whom we’ve individually collaborated with in different musical projects through the years, and Råd Kjetil Senza Testa, a new and exciting musical collective consisting of old Umeå pop and hardcore scenesters, among them the guy who produced the very first version of New noise for a local hardcore compilation in early 1997. We unconditionally endorse these bands. Great music, good crude fun, what more do you need? It’s going to be one of those nights. Thank you for populating the pit in 2012. Over and out.
