Photos by Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com It’s an inspirational message versus an in-your-face proclamation in this 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl matchup. This first round pairing sees Avenged Sevenfold attempting to ‘Seize the Day’ against Shinedown , who appear ready to ‘Devour’ their new foes. Though a little on the softer side than what we usually get from Avenged Sevenfold, ‘Seize the Day’ is no less powerful in message. The inspirational track warns the listener to “ Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost, ” a sentiment that isn’t lost on today’s NFL player. With such a shortened season as compared to other sports, it’s important to make every moment count and Avenged Sevenfold definitely connect with a football theme in the song. Shinedown’s ‘Devour,’ meanwhile, has that great opening build just waiting to explode. As Brent Smith sings about taking it and taking it and taking it over and over again, it’s no wonder that by the time we get to the chorus he’s ready to devour, proclaiming, “It’s your final hour.” If that doesn’t speak to the mentality and pressure of an NFL player, what does? So there you have it — Avenged Sevenfold versus Shinedown. Which band advances? Your vote will decide. Listen to both tracks below, then vote in the poll provided. There’s nothing to get you rocking like a pair of rock anthems, and this 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl matchup has them. It’s Godsmack ‘s ‘I Stand Alone’ squaring off against Papa Roach ‘s ‘Last Resort’ to see which is the better football anthem. Godsmack’s Sully Erna spells it out for all comers in ‘I Stand Alone’ when he belts “ I’ve told you this once before / You can’t control me / If you try to take me down, you’re gonna pay .” That type of grit and determination is what drives many of the NFL players, and in the end, their ultimate goal to the be the team that “stands alone” at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Godsmack’s competition in this round is Papa Roach who have some strong statements of their own with ‘Last Resort.’ The pounding drums and guitars only strengthen the mood of the track, which is one of back-against-the-wall desperation. And as we all know, desperation can be a powerful motivator. When Jacoby Shaddix unleashes on this song, is there anyone left unmoved? It’s a tough matchup — Godsmack against Papa Roach. 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl You may need to strap on a helmet when you get a load of the songs in the 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl. We’re taking some of the hardest hitting tracks and pairing them off in order to determine the best song to get you amped for a football game. In this first-round matchup, we’re pitting Metallica ‘s classic ‘Seek and Destroy’ against the Danish rockers Volbeat and their recent hit ‘A Warrior’s Call.’ Metallica’s ‘Seek and Destroy’ is a natural choice, with its super-charged riffage, hard-hitting Lars Ulrich drums and a song title that might as well be a motto for most defensive players in the league as they attempt to take out the other team’s offensive weapons. As the song says at its kickoff, “ We’re scanning the scene / In the city tonight / We’re looking for you / To start up a fight .” Volbeat, meanwhile, provide what seems to be an anthem describing most football players’ mentality. ‘A Warrior’s Call’ stands out with its powerful drums and driving guitars gaining momentum right up until the song explodes. The lyrics also bring it home, with the motivational message “ Breaking your record and breaking your bones / Born a warrior with a code / A champion feeding your face with a fist / You will feel all his power! ” leading the way. The stage is set and now it’s your turn to tell us who advances. Check out each of the tracks below and vote for your favorite in the poll. Theo Wargo, Getty Images You can never get too much of a good thing and Dave Grohl knows that the magic provided by the Sound City Players is something that music fans need to see. After an epic performance at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this month and another scheduled show at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles Jan. 31, Grohl says he’s open to staging more of the star-studded concerts. The ‘ Sound City ‘ director that gathered all the talent in the first place tells Billboard , “We plan to do shows all over the world. When I came up with the idea of taking all these performers to the live stage a few months ago, my idea [was] to have video presentations between each performance. We’ll have that at the next shows.” The first two Sound City Players dates have included guest appearances from Stevie Nicks , John Fogerty , Cheap Trick ‘s Rick Nielsen , Slipknot ‘s Corey Taylor , Fear’s Lee Ving, Rick Springfield and members of Rage Against the Machine , Nirvana , Queens of the Stone Age and more. Fan-shot video of the Sound City Players featuring Corey Taylor and Rick Nielsen covering Cheap Trick’s ‘Surrender’ may be seen below. The concerts are helping to promote Grohl’s ‘Sound City’ documentary, which not only tells the story of the legendary Los Angeles recording studio but also serves as a love letter by some of rock’s greats to the idea of collaboration in a room and the bonds formed playing live music together. Grohl says, “I knew I didn’t want it to be a retrospective documentary, the history of the studio. [The story] has an emotion quality to it and it had some relevance … ‘Sound City’ has been home to so many influential albums, but also to so many beautiful stories about people and their relationships. It’s such a deeper story than a ‘Behind the Music’ that would talk about ‘Damn the Torpedoes.’ The film will screen in theaters around the world on Jan. 31, with additional screenings set up throughout the month of February.
