NBC / SNL After a triumphant performance of their new song ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ at the 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief at Madison Square Garden, one-time Nirvana members Dave Grohl , Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear again joined forces with Beatles legend Paul McCartney to perform the song during last night’s episode of ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Like they did during the 12-12-12 show, the musical collective rocked out a rousing rendition of the tune, which appears on the soundtrack to Dave Grohl’s upcoming ‘Sound City’ documentary. In fact, the studio version is already available on iTunes in advance of the release of the soundtrack and the film. The ‘SNL’ performance features McCartney delivering a powerful wail over a monster riff by Smear, while Grohl crushes it on the drums and Novoselic provides a thumping low-end. The ‘Sound City’ documentary will premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in February, while the film’s soundtrack will drop on March 12. Justin Sullivan, Getty Images We’ve all been curious to see ‘Sound City,’ Dave Grohl ‘s star-studded documentary tribute to the legendary L.A. studio of the same name, and now the wait is almost over — provided you have a ticket to next year’s Sundance Festival. Sundance 2013, set to kick off Jan. 17 in Park City, Utah, will play host to a wide variety of new films from across the spectrum, and ‘Sound City’ will be among the new documentaries getting their first public screenings. It’s one of the most high-profile premiere outlets a filmmaker can ask for, and Grohl is understandably enthused. As he put it in a press release, “As a first time director, I am humbled to be able to share my passion for songwriting and storytelling with this incredible cast of legendary musicians, as seen through the extraordinary story of America’s greatest unsung recording studio, Sound City. Being included in this group of artists is a true honor, and the Sundance Film Festival is the perfect place to premiere a film about craft, integrity, and passion for art. I am over the moon!” Grohl has been hard at work on ‘Sound City’ over the last year, interviewing a long list of former studio clients and organizing jams with everyone from his former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic to Rick Springfield to Slipknot ‘s Corey Taylor, not to mention kicking off a SiriusXM radio show dedicated to the studio’s history. Theo Wargo, Getty Images As if he didn’t already have enough to do, Dave Grohl has picked up another new gig: Host for satellite radio provider SiriusXM, where the Foo Fighters frontman will be behind the mic for a limited-run series titled ‘Dave Grohl Presents Sound City.’ As astute readers have probably already guessed, Grohl’s show will tie in with his upcoming ‘Sound City’ documentary , which takes a loving look back at some of the many classic songs and albums recorded at the legendary studio of the same name. If you think devoting a film and radio show to a defunct old studio seems a little excessive, never fear: Grohl has plenty of material to work from, as Sound City played host to a long list of acts that included Fleetwood Mac , Metallica , and Tom Petty (not to mention Nirvana ) before closing its doors. “I’m so proud of the Sound City film and beyond excited for the world to see what I’ve been working on for the past year,” Grohl said in a statement announcing the show. “Even before that, though, I’m grateful to SiriusXM for giving me the opportunity to share all this great music and to let people know what got me excited about Sound City in the first place.” ‘Dave Grohl Presents Sound City’ is scheduled to debut this Thursday (Nov. 29) at 4pm ET on Classic Vinyl, channel 26, with subsequent shows airing on different channels. Mark Mainz / Jonathan Wood, Getty Images We now know what Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl is going to do with at least part of his hiatus , as it’s been revealed that he’s returned to the drumkit to play on the next Queens of the Stone Age album. Queens leader Josh Homme confirmed the news to BBC Radio . For further proof, the band posted a mixing board photo on their Facebook page (see below) showing the knobs for Homme’s guitar and Grohl’s drums. With the addition of Grohl, that means that longtime drummer Joey Castillo has exited the band . Homme confirmed Castillo’s exit during his appearance on BBC Radio. Incidentally, Castillo joined the group following the 2002 album ‘Songs for the Deaf,’ which featured Grohl on drums. Grohl and Homme have a longtime friendship and musical connection that also included their partnership in the band Them Crooked Vultures . Homme revealed earlier this year that the band had returned to recording after several stops and starts in recent years. The band’s sixth studio album will be the follow-up to their 2007 effort, ‘Era Vulgaris.’ The group had reportedly worked on material dating as far back as 2008, and a supposed 2011 release never came to fruition. Though an official release date has not been announced, a new album is expected in 2013 and the group has already booked appearances at Lollapalooza Brazil and Chile and at the Download Festival . In addition to his upcoming plans with Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl is in the process of wrapping up his ‘ Sound City ‘ documentary, based on the popular Los Angeles recording studio and featuring many top names in rock that have recorded there over the years. Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com / Kevin Winter, Getty Images Several months ago it was revealed that Slipknot / Stone Sour vocalist Corey Taylor was one of the artists recording music with Foo Fighters frontman / ex- Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl for the latter’s ;Sound City’ documentary. Now Taylor has revealed more about the collaboration in an interview with Phoenix radio station KUPD (watch below). Taylor reveals, “[Dave Grohl] sent an email to me, basically explaining this huge project he was doing – the documentary around the infamous board that he got from Sound City, which so many people have recorded on – myself included – we did ‘Iowa’ on that board…He bought it, and I loved the idea that he was like ‘how many albums have been made on this board?” He adds, “He wrote the song, he sent me a demo of it and I was like ‘this is fantastic’ and I just basically wrote the first thing that came off the top of my head. He didn’t even hear it until I went down there to record it. And I laid it down and he was just like ‘wow.’ Because we did it old school – two inch tape, take after take after take. And with that board, man. It just sings, it was really, really cool.” Countless legendary albums were recorded at Sound City, including Nirvana ‘s ‘Nevermind,’ Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours,’ Neil Young’s ‘After The Gold Rush,’ Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers’ ‘Damn the Torpedoes’ and Rage Against the Machine ‘s self-titled debut. While an official release date for the documentary has still not been revealed, the web site for the film has several video clips and other info. Watch Corey Taylor’s Interview on KUPD
