Roadrunner Records Stone Sour singer Corey Taylor knew early on he wanted to do something special with their latest disc, and with ‘ House of Gold & Bones Part 1 ,’ the band doesn’t disappoint. In fact, this dark tale of a person’s inner battles getting over a traumatic relationship break leaves us yearning for more (thankfully, there will be a ‘Part 2′). The singer says of the disc , “It’s really a morality play. It’s about a person trying to find himself, or herself. You know, everyone in their lives finds themselves inevitably at a crossroads when it comes to a personal evolution and whatnot, trying to figure out what they want to do with the rest of their lives.” Much like a person trying to move on from a difficult split, ‘House of Gold & Bones Part 1′ plays like the emotions of that experience, spanning from bitter, vitriolic, and selfish to broken, mournful and depressive. Listeners got their first introduction with the release of the double-single, ‘Gone Sovereign’ and ‘Absolute Zero.’ The two songs lead off the album and descriptively show where the title character is at their life — a splintered shell of themselves feeling that every legend has been shattered in ‘Gone Sovereign’ and that they’re so filled with hate that there’s nothing left to offer in ‘Absolute Zero.’ Both tracks are filled with hard-hitting guitars courtesy of Josh Rand and James Root and at times powerful and thunderous drumming from Roy Mayorga. Rand recently stated , “‘House of Gold & Bones’ takes everything that’s great about this band and amplifies it. The riffs, the lyrics, the grooves and the songs are like Stone Sour times 10. There’s also heavy stuff that’s like nothing we’ve ever done before. It’s dark as hell and a complete experience from the first track to the last.” Taylor vocally is hitting on all cylinders with this album. ‘A Rumor of Skin’ shows him delivering a deeper register; ‘RU486′ and ‘Last of the Real’ unleash a full blast of his aggression; and ‘Taciturn’ allows the listener to feel every ounce of emotion he’s pouring into the track. ‘ Taciturn ‘ received its live debut by Taylor earlier this year, with the singer primarily on acoustic guitar. While it can pass as a solo song live, on the album there’s some extra pieces as the track builds from an intimate and sorrowful song into something more epic and filled-out by the end with Taylor begging, “ Give me a sign / Show me a light / Maybe tonight I’ll tell you everything .” ‘The Travelers, Pt. 1′ and ‘Tired’ also flow particularly well together in the middle of the record, with the string-backing coming to the forefront. ‘The Travelers, Pt. 1′ provides ‘A Day in the Life’-type conclusion to the title character’s downward spiral, while in ‘Tired,’ the strings pick up the pace and provide a building feel of the character’s increasing instability. While we’re not sure how many singles ‘House of Gold & Bones Part 1′ may have, that’s not the point of the record. Stone Sour have provided the story of a character’s personal voyage and their inner dialogue that works as one album-length idea, and in that aspect they have definitely succeeded and left us anxious to see where the story continues in ‘House of Gold & Bones Part 2.’
Roadrunner Leave it to Corey Taylor to go big with his latest vision. The Stone Sour singer just continued his dedication to the ambitious ‘ House of Gold & Bones ‘ double-album by introducing intricate packaging for the two releases, which when put together forms the shape of a house. Fans will be able to get the first part this week when ‘House of Gold & Bones, Pt. 1′ arrives in stores, but it will take the second part, which isn’t due until next spring, to complete the house-shaped packaging. While we have to wait to construct the full ‘House of Gold & Bones,’ Stone Sour has posted a trailer to show their fans how it will all fit together. The clip can be seen below. On top of the double disc, fans can look for a four-issue comic book . The comic book series debuts April 17, 2013 through Dark Horse Comics. Taylor also recently stated that he’s interested in creating two films to represent each record. Stone Sour will hit the road to support both releases, but the band is starting their run outside of the U.S. Aside from two Halloween week shows (Oct. 28 and 29) at Wooly’s in Taylor’s hometown of Des Moines, the trek will span through Mexico, South America, and Europe for the remainder of the year. Stone Sour will kick off 2013 taking part in Australia’s Soundwave Festival . North American dates are expected to follow, but have yet to be announced. Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com When Stone Sour vocalist Corey Taylor initially revealed his band’s “grand” plan for their next album, he might have undersold it. As it turns out, releasing the album in two parts is only the beginning, as Taylor is plotting a comic book companion piece and now he’s contemplating turning both discs into films. Taylor tells Artisan News (video below), “Once we’ve toured and we’ve got the music out to everyone, the thing I really wanna do is have two movies — Part 1 and Part 2. With the comic and the story and the music, I think we’ll be able to do it. I already know who I wanna talk to about doing it, so we’ll see what happens.” The singer did not tip his hand on who he wants to direct or develop the project. The singer has been quite busy of late expanding the boundaries of the conceptual ‘House of Gold & Bones’ double-disc. He recently inked a deal with Dark Horse Comics to create a four-issue series based around the ideas for the record. The first installment in the series is expected on April 17, 2013. As for ‘House of Gold & Bones,’ the first album of the two-disc set is due Oct. 23, with the second disc to follow next spring. The band just debuted their new ‘Gone Sovereign’ video earlier this month. The group’s world tour in support of the upcoming releases continues in Tokyo, Japan on Oct. 27. Roadrunner Records As anticipation builds for the Oct. 22 release of Stone Sour ‘s fourth album ‘ House of Gold & Bones Part 1 ,’ the band has released the video for ‘Gone Sovereign.’ P.R. Brown, who has worked on several previous Stone Sour and Slipknot videos, directed ‘Gone Sovereign.’ The performance clip begins with the band tightly grouped around Roy Mayorga’s drum kit, then once the song kicks in, the shot widens to reveal they are in a club playing for frenzied fans. The second half of the two part concept album is due next year. Singer Corey Taylor is also creating a comic book to go along with the ‘House of Gold & Bones’ albums. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” says Taylor. “I’ve always been very critical of when comics go south and basically pull the fan out of what the potential is. It’s me pretty much putting my money where my mouth is.” He is scheduled to be at New York’s Comic Con this weekend to promote the comic. Stone Sour are set to embark on a world tour at the end of this month. It will take them to Japan, South America, Europe and Australia. “It’s gonna be awesome to bring the ‘House of Gold and Bones’ to the fans live,” Taylor says. “We’re all psyched to come to Japan and South America right away as well- they’re some of the best fans in the world! In a recent interview with Radio Metal , Slipknot / Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor recalls the time he was asked to contribute vocals to Anthrax’s critically acclaimed 2011 album ‘Worship Music’ prior to the thrash metal veterans’ reunion with singer Joey Belladonna. A few years back, Anthrax vocalist Dan Nelson departed the band after ‘Worship Music’ was recorded. It was then assumed that John Bush would re-record the vocals on the album, but he ended up parting ways with the band, as well. ‘Worship Music’ ended up being re-recorded with Belladonna handling vocals and reworking some of the lyrics from the scrapped version. However, prior to the Belladonna reunion, Taylor was asked to help out, but his record label wouldn’t let him. “I didn’t record anything with Anthrax, actually,” Taylor explains. “It’s one of those things that I would have loved to do, but never had the chance to do it. When they sent me some riffs and some music they had done, I thought it would be fun, not only as a friend but as a fan too, to see where the demos could go after my involvement.” Taylor continues, “But my label forced me out of this project so I wasn’t able to do it. Then, I went to do [ Slipknot ‘s] ‘All Hope Is Gone’ and Anthrax called Joey Belladonna back. After hearing ‘Worship Music’, I really think it’s their best record. Although I didn’t record anything with them, I told them that I would love to help them in writing stuff in the future. …At first, I was really mad about it, but I let it go after a while. But it would have been interesting to see what Anthrax and I could have done, for sure.” In the same interview, Taylor talks Stone Sour ‘s upcoming album, ‘ House of Gold & Bones Part 1 ? (due Oct. 22) and its follow-up ‘Part 2′ (due in 2013). “We had a lot of fun doing this,’ remarks Taylor. “Part Two is a wonderful difference from Part One: it wasn’t just getting together and re-recording some stuff on Part One. Facebook: Johny Chow Stone Sour guitarist Josh Rand let the beans spill in a recent interview about Cavalera Conspiracy and Soulfly bassist Johny Chow helping the band out with their touring bassist vacancy, but now the band has made an official announcement with Rand telling fans the news via a Facebook posting . In the recent interview, the guitarist said of Chow, “He came in, a super cool guy and did all 24 songs in five days. It was insane! I don’t think people realize how great of a player he is. It was just insane to watch him knock these songs out. With him coming in and doing that, it just added another level of energy to the whole project and he took a lot of the songs to a different level.” Chow was invited to play with the band after Rachel Bolan’s schedule with Skid Row would not allow for him to tour with the group. Bolan handled bass duties on ‘ House of Gold and Bones, Parts 1 & 2′ records after the band dealt with the exit of bassist Shawn Economaki earlier this year. In making the official announcement, Rand stated: Dear Friends, I am pleased to announce that Johny Chow will be playing bass guitar with Stone Sour on the House of Gold and Bones Parts 1 & 2 tour cycle. Johny is a fantastic player and a long-time friend of the band. We are all excited to have him be part of what will be our most exciting and ambitious album cycle yet.
