Sean Gardner, Getty Images Interscope honcho Jimmy Iovine spilled the beans earlier this year that Trent Reznor ‘s involvement with Dr. Dre’s Beats by Dre service involved a new streaming service. Now comes word that the Beats Electronics service will be available beginning this summer. According to Billboard , Iovine revealed during Tuesday’s (Feb. 12) AllThingsD Dive Into Media Conference that the service would simply be called Beats (it had been previously given the tentative title Daisy) and would rely heavily on hand-curated lists in order to differentiate itself from such other streaming services as Spotify, Rhapsody, Muve and Slacker. “We are making tons and tons of curated lists,” said Iovine. “If you go to the gym, we’ll know where you are. So when you wake up in the morning, there will be a list waiting for you.” As for Reznor’s involvement, he’s serving as chief creative officer and is offering his expertise in helping to personalize playlists for each listener. As someone who is overseeing the curation of playlists, he’ll also study algorithms to help determine what might fit each person the best. Iovine stated that they wanted to “marry math with emotion,” and added, “Right now there are only mathematical solutions.” The label chief also explained that Beats plans to give artists access to user data, allowing them the ability to know exactly who their audience is and where their music is being used. Ipecac Recordings Deftones frontman Chino Moreno is a man of many projects and his latest finds him recording with several former members of the band Isis in a new group called Palms . The band has confirmed the completion of their self-titled debut album and the disc is now due June 25 through Ipecac Recordings. Moreno is joined by the band by Jeff Caxide, Aaron Harris and Bryant Clifford Meyer. They’ve been working on new music during breaks in Moreno’s schedule over the past year, with Harris handling mixing duties and all of the band members serving as producers. The Deftones frontman stated last fall about the project, “They recorded this music a long time ago, almost a year ago, so musically it’s been its own thing and I only got asked to do vocals on it not too long ago by my buddy Aaron [Harris], he’s the drummer. It’s not really a thing I rush on. Any of the projects I do, I don’t have to do them. I do them strictly because it’s fun to make music with friends and to do that.” Moreno recently took to his Mixlr account, where he played an early, unmastered version of the band’s song ‘Tropics,’ which will be part of the upcoming disc. The group recently launched an official website , but at present only a splash page with a photo and links to their social network accounts is all that is part of it. Facebook: Testament Testament are undoubtedly one of metal’s greatest live acts. Brandishing nearly unparalleled power throughout their live shows, Testament simply cannot be ignored when they take the stage. It’s been a few years since the thrash legends released a live album, the latest being ‘Live at Eindhoven ’87′ in 2009, but after the success of the band’s 2012 full-length, ‘Dark Roots of Earth,’ it only makes sense that Testament will be taping a new live record on Feb. 15. Testament boasts one of metal’s finest lineups when it comes to pure talent, with Chuck Billy on vocals, Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson on guitars, Greg Christian on bass and the ‘Atomic Clock’ Gene Hoglan on drums. It would truly be a crime not to own a solid piece of history from this particular Testament lineup, so luckily, before the end of 2013, a new live album from the Bay Area thrashers will hit the shelves. “We haven’t shot a live DVD or CD since our Live in London release and we’ve had two killer albums since then,” comments Testament’s towering vocalist Chuck Billy. “We thought it would be cool to put out a live DVD/CD focusing on the last three records (‘The Gathering,’ ‘The Formation of Damnation’ and ‘Dark Roots of Earth’) mixed in with a good amount of classics too. Last time we recorded anything live in America was for Live at the Fillmore on the West Coast. This time we thought we’d give the East Coast a chance to show the world how crazy and loud they can be. We’re going to be playing an extra-long 17 – 18 song set, which will be our lengthiest set of the tour. Let’s see all you thrashers stirring it up out there and singing along! See ya!” Testament are currently touring throughout North America with fellow thrash veterans Overkill . If you’re in the Long Island, N.Y. area, make sure to check out Testament at the Paramount on Feb. 15 to witness the making of the band’s live album in person! Praise be to our intergalactic lords and masters of GWAR , as the alien metallers have announced a second leg of their ‘Fate or Chaos’ tour. The string of U.S. dates will be shared with the bands Warbeast and Wilson, who will open for GWAR during the 16-date tour. GWAR launched their ‘Fate or Chaos’ tour in late 2012, bringing DevilDriver, Cancer Bats and Legacy of Disorder along for the ride, resulting in a solid bill of acts. The quality continues this April when the traveling freak show begins again. GWAR front freak Oderus Urungus put down his crack pipe for a moment to lend us his thoughts about the future dates: As you humans amuse yourself with your mundane holidays, it has been a time of intense activity for GWAR, as we record our 13th studio album– the first one with our new Scumdog brother, Pustulus Maximus! We begin this years festivities with the second and final leg of our Fate or Chaos tour, so everybody who missed the first leg can see Cyber-Jesus get his f—ing ass handed to him. Then it’s back in the studio to work on all the hulking war machines we shall need on our devastating, brand-spanking new tour, after the album drops at the end of the summer! Can you believe I said drop? How f—ing stupid! Warbeast vocalist Bruce Corbitt also shared his excitement about the tour: This will be the second time Warbeast has toured with GWAR. I have to admit, I’m even more excited this time around. GWAR is more than a metal show… it’s a metal experience. We’re just happy to be part of that experience again for a few weeks. We also can’t wait to play our new material from our upcoming second album ‘Destroy’ in front of their insane fans! Rick Diamond, Getty Images Pearl Jam fans have been waiting patiently for new music and the band admittedly has been taking things at their own pace, but guitarist Stone Gossard gave fans some hope for a light at the end of the tunnel by offering a timeline during an interview on an Italian radio station this week. The guitarist told the station (excerpted by GrungeReport.net ), “I cannot tell you an exact date, but if all goes according to plan, we will have a new Pearl Jam album in nine or twelve months.” For those doing the math in their heads, that would place the timeline between November 2013 and February 2014. Last fall, both Jeff Ament and Eddie Vedder alluded to the band being halfway through their new album, but they also revealed that the group had spent significant time away from each other over the past year and would regroup when the timing felt right to conclude their disc. Late last month, Ament added that the band members had met with producer Brendan O’Brien , which would at least signify that they might be starting up on new music soon. The group has also booked some scattered dates this summer, including a show at Chicago’s Wrigley Field . The still-untitled new album would be the band’s first since 2009′s ‘Backspacer’ and only their third disc in the last decade.
