Razor & Tie HIM continue to give a little bit more as they get closer to the release of their upcoming ‘ Tears on Tape ‘ album. The band’s website , which has featured a clock splash page for a good portion of the past month, has finally changed to feature a horned art piece, complete with the band’s “heartagram” logo and an empty box. However, fans who type in the words “Tears on Tape” into the box will get a quick flash of the album’s new cover art. What appears is a snake who has wound itself around in a circle with symbols on the body throughout. In the middle of the of the circular snake is the band’s “Heartagram” logo, while outside of the snake piece is blocked artwork that looks similar to the waves of an ocean. You can see the final piece to your left. HIM recently announced an April 30 street date for their eighth studio album. Frontman Ville Valo stated about the upcoming disc, “‘Tears on Tape’ is going to be really organic, straight-in-your-face, super melancholy bulls— [Laughs]. It’s going to be something nobody’s heard before. I’m really happy about it. It sounds great. Remember the soundtrack for ‘Twin Peaks’ that Angelo Badalamenti did? It’s got that similar forlorn, melancholy quality but mixed up with Motörhead. That’s where we’re at! We’re really happy. It’s got that dreamlike quality. Mark Tremonti Talks Alter Bridge, Future Solo Project Plans + More With Loudwire Radio

Metalkult Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com The man of many bands, guitarist Mark Tremonti , will be the special guest on this weekend’s Loudwire Radio show with host Mike ‘Sandman’ Sanders. The rocker took the time to discuss his solo band, Creed and Alter Bridge . Tremonti, the band, are currently winding down their North American dates, with the final show scheduled for March 5 in West Hollywood. Meanwhile, Alter Bridge recently announced that they’d be releasing a new album and touring in 2013. Find out the latest on all of Tremonti’s project, including some big news about bassist Wolfgang Van Halen, in the Q&A with Sandman below: Can you share the backstory on the new Tremonti single ‘Wish You Well’ with us? Well, that song is probably the oldest song that I’ve ever put on a record. I started writing it back in 7th or 8th grade and had demos made of it, then I made another demo for the first Alter Bridge record but it never made the record. So, I’ve been waiting for this song a long time to finally get it out there. Obviously people know you from being the guitarist in Creed and Alter Bridge, but your solo album has done really well. How long was the album in the planning in your thoughts, as far as going out and putting your own record out? For years, I knew I had a lot of song ideas that would never see the light of day unless I did something about it. And then when I saw my schedule open up when Myles left on the Slash tour for about three months, I just kind of decided that was when I was going to get busy and record those ideas. We should mention that the album is titled ‘All I Was’ and, although he’s not on the album, he is on tour with you: Wolfgang Van Halen . Are you going to return him to his father someday or are you going to adopt him and keep him? He’s going to be an official member of the band. He’ll be on our next album and doing all the tours, it’s just … we’re going to have to … just like we work around the Alter Bridge schedule, this year we’ll have to work around the Van Halen schedule, as well. Fantastic. Now, I know you’re on tour for a little bit longer. What is the time table, as far as, heading back into the studio to work on your next Tremonti album? I’m not sure right now. I’m really focused on getting this Alter Bridge record written and finalized and getting to the studio and then once things die down a little bit from that I’ll see if I’ve got any breaks — again, probably when Myles is out with Slash — to get going on writing another Tremonti record. I know there was a report at Loudwire.com that had you and Myles in the studio together for at least a brief time in between his U.S. tour with Slash and then him going overseas. So, you guys have gotten a little bit of work done I’m assuming? Yeah, we’ve got about five songs that I think are album worthy and ready to go to pre-production at this point. And I guess my next question would be about your other band — the first band that brought you to prominence is Creed. Is there a future for that band? Do you see putting out another record with those guys? Well, we just toured extensively last year with Creed and did about all the touring we could do in the States and we went to South America and Indonesia and I think I’m going to take a rest from Creed and get back with some Alter Bridge music and see what happens from there. Also, I noted that you recently visited some U.S. troops over in Germany, and I’m sure that meant a lot to them. What does that mean to you, to be able to go out and support our Armed Forces? Any time you can make [members of the military] happy by just showing up and shaking some hands and talking to folks, it’s a great thing. It’s just part of one of the bonuses of what we do. People like meeting their favorite musicians and when you can go and visit somebody that’s away from their family and risking their lives for you … to make them happy, I’m all about it. February 5th, 2013 Metalkult Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Frontman Matt Pike of High On Fire was the guest on Full Metal Jackie’s radio show this past weekend. Pike spoke about the band’s upcoming massive trek with Anthrax , Exodus, Municipal Waste and Holy Grail, as well as his sobriety with being out on tour. He also explains why pajamas are very important to him while on the road. Read Full Metal Jackie’s interview with Matt Pike below: High On Fire just recorded two shows in New York for a live album. The last studio album ‘De Vermis Mysteriis’ was recorded in Massachusettes. What do a bunch of guys from Oakland like so much about working on the East Coast? Well I don’t know – I overdose myself with clam chowder [Laughs] I don’t know I really like the town itself, Salem is really cool. They have graveyards, I always go into the graveyard and write the lyrics, they just had all these cool graves. I’ve been to these weird archaic, antique-y kind of s—t and they got that whole witch burning vibe there. Overall just working with Kurt [Ballou of Converge] is really cool. In the past you’ve tended to tour more with sludge and doom bands and now you’ll be on the Metal Alliance tour with Anthrax, Exodus, Municipal Waste and Holy Grail. What elements of thrash and speed metal excite you most as a fan? I kind of grew up on all of it, I grew up on hardcore punk and we’re talking old school like Black Flag and Circle Jerks, Corrosion of Conformity. Punk and metal were crossing over and that’s kind of where we got thrash from – I just grew up on that whole scene, going to punk and thrash metal shows. Anthrax was actually one of the first metal shows I went to and I’ve always liked Exodus and Gary Holt’s a hero of mine – he’s such an awesome guitar player. I’m really excited to be going on this and hopefully picking up some shredding techniques off the other players and it’ll be good to be out with Municipal Waste, too. I don’t know much about the Grails yet but I’m curious – everybody talks good about them so I’m looking forward to it. Matt, High on Fire pulled out of last summer’s Mayhem tour so you could focus on getting healthy and you’ve been pretty candid since then about sobriety. What was your biggest misconception about sober touring musicians and what changed that perspective? Well what changed it was my liver submission – I got 40 good years of partying my ass off and I had a lot of fun doing it. You get used to doing certain things if you’ve been on the road for twenty something years and you get used to your comfortable buzz every night and then all of sudden you take that out of your repertoire, you become a little more anxiety ridden and anti-social. It’s hard to get back to that page without having the substance that helps you calm your brain and your nerves. It’s a different way of living – I believe everybody should enjoy life and everybody should be able to drink for a period of time and do drugs for a period of time and f—ing do whatever they want for a period of time. It’s all about learning how to live life and I believe everbody should exercise too and everything in moderation. I wasn’t a person that could really take a lot of things in moderation – I always had to outdo everybody, it’s just kind of my personality. [Laughs] I’m doing good now, I’m feeling healthy and I’m learning how to deal with it. I still love partying, I just watch everybody else get drunk and smoke a little bit of weed and I’ll be cool. Recently you talked at length about pajamas with ‘The Village Voice.’ Oh yeah, that’s my thing man. I run to the bus, take a shower, get in my pajamas with slippers and play Angry Birds. Occasionally I’ll go out and say “Hi” to people, sign a couple of things and go back into the bus and just chill. You just answered my question. My question was going to be, what’s the most non-metal thing you do? It’s so atypical of metal that by defying metal stereotypes in doing it, it actually becomes metal. [Laughs] Yeah, well I guess I answered your question then – being in pajamas and slippers and everyone looks at you all weird, it’s kind of funny. What else is going on with High On Fire this year? Well we’re going to Europe at the end of this month – I’ll be over in Europe in February and then after that it’s the Metal Alliance tour and I can’t wait to see all the fans and play some songs for you. January 30th, 2013 Metalkult Jag Gundu, Getty Images Rob Zombie has been talking about his next studio album for quite some time, but now comes word that the disc has a title and is expected this April. In addition, Zombie revealed a firm release date for his upcoming film, ‘ The Lords of Salem ,’ which will closely follow the new album. The disc, titled ‘Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor,’ is now on schedule for an April 23 street date courtesy of Zodiac Swan / T-Boy / Ume. Zombie worked closely with acclaimed rock producer Bob Marlette on the set. ‘The Lords of Salem’ film will follow in theaters April 26, though the music on the album is completely separate from the movie. Last fall, Zombie revealed of the new disc, “It’s stylistically sort of a little bit of everything. Fans of my really old stuff will love it because there’s a certain aspect of it that’s very reminiscent of that. But it is also very looking to the future. It’s hard to describe music to somebody if they haven’t heard it, but I feel like it’s the best of all the things I’ve done. I’ve finally found a perfect match between the old stuff I did and then new stuff. That’s the way it sounds to me anyway.” The veteran rocker added that he’s got a special feeling about the new record, explaining, “It seems to happen every couple of years or every 10 years or every five years or whatever, you have a moment when it all comes together. Not that the other records are bad, but not every record can be like the most inspired event in your life. But for some reason, this one feels like it. The songwriting, the sound of it, the vibe, the production — it’s special.” The album details came with the announcement that Zombie would be honored at this year’s Revolver Golden Gods Awards on May. 2. January 11th, 2013 Metalkult Housecore In one of the more interesting splits we’ve encountered as of late, Philip H. Anselmo , who requires not a single word of introduction, courtesy of his legacy, and Texas thrashers Warbeast have released their ‘War of the Gargantuas’ split through Anselmo’s own Housecore Records. The four-song EP boasts two songs per artist, and is historical simply because it is the first time Anselmo has released any solo music (with the Illegals as his backing band) during his 30 years of active service in the name of heavy metal. We’ve never had all of our senses assaulted at once, but how we assume that sensation would feel is created by this short, blast of an EP. It’s tightly constructed. It’s loud. It’s extreme. It’s all the things we like in our metal. It’s like each artist is trying to “out metal” the other and that’s a good thing for metal fans. Inside, you’ll find lots of squeally vocals, galloping solos and heavy metal that never, ever compromises. The first track,’Conflict,’ which is one from Philip H. Anselmo & the Illegals, is shrieky, post- Pantera Anselmo, but he still has the same dangerous bark and damaging bite. How a man who has been destroying mics for decades can still summon this much strength and deliver this kind of bone-liquefying vocal terror is beyond us. He is no mere mortal, nor mere metal. He is an elite frontman with few (if any) peers, especially when he lets ‘er rip, as is the case here. The next track, ‘Birth of a Psycho’ by Warbeast, is a hulking slab of dirty, gutter-dwelling, sludge-caked punk rock with a little bit of blackened grime and some deathy riffs thrown in for good measure. It culls influence from several metal sub-genres. The band takes guitars grooves and vicious vocals and throws ‘em all into a gnarly, metallic bonfire. The brilliantly titled ‘Family, ‘Friends’ and Associates’ is an Anselmo track which gets the point across in a few words, and is loaded with screamy vocals, with Anselmo’s authoratative spoken words behind it. The vocal spasms are supplemented by chunky, extra fast riffery, squalls and some Motorhead-y solos. When Anselmo barks , “I’m calling you out, ” you have a choice to either meet him in the ring or cower in the corner. We think most people will be doing the latter, based on the ferocity in which he makes the statement. Hands down, it’s the best track of the four. The EP ends with ‘It,’ a Warbeast track that is also fast with machine-gunned riffing, and some smash-til-your-arms-fall-off drumming. It’s an exercise in extreme metal, and the right amount of groove. No wonder Anselmo chose to appear on an EP with them and sign them to his label. No false metal here. It’s about as trend-free and trend-killing as it gets. Anselmo’s music often has a touch of melody, which he forgoes here. But everything is equally as memorable. Warbeast are just that – a fighting, battling beast. We wish ‘War of the Gargantuas’ was a bit longer, but it offers a nice taste of what to expect on Warbeast’s upcoming full-length, ‘Destroy,’ and Anselmo’s debut solo album, both due this year. In the meantime, pick up the EP at iTunes and catch Anselmo’s band Down on tour with Warbeast this winter. ?

January 9th, 2013 Metalkult Theo Wargo / Kevin Winter, Getty Images The ‘Sound City’ soundtrack is definitely star-studded, so when Dave Grohl revealed that he would have several guest stars join him for a concert celebrating the premiere of his ‘Sound City’ documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, there was naturally a lot of questions about who would be part of the Sound City Players . Now, after a little bit of arm twisting, it’s so far been revealed that Corey Taylor , Taylor Hawkins and Alain Johannes will be among those joining Grohl in Park City, Utah, for the gig on Jan. 18. Grohl has been updating fans about his band practices, but finally bowed to a little pressure with a Facebook update that stated, “Pics or it didn’t happen, you say? Right now, band practice.” Accompanying the quip was a studio photo of Grohl performing with his longtime Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and Queens of the Stone Age multi-instrumentalist Alain Johannes. In addition, the Salt Lake Tribune confirmed the participation of Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor. According to the paper, Taylor himself revealed his participation. The singer has enjoyed the Sundance experience in the past, taking the stage with the all-star covers band Camp Freddy several years ago. The fact that Grohl is performing with either Hawkins or Johannes should come as little surprise given the length of the relationship and association the singer has kept up with both musicians. Plus, the fact that both artists appear on multiple cuts on the ‘Sound City’ soundtrack makes them a natural fit for the show. For those trying to connect the dots with other potential guests, Hawkins appears on songs that feature Stevie Nicks , Rick Springfield and Fear’s Lee Ving on the soundtrack, while Johannes contributes to tracks featuring Ving and Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme . The movie is called ‘ Legion of the Black ‘ and it serves as an extension of the album. The flick is built around eight songs from the disc, with the band members appearing in performance segments. The group recently premiered it just prior to the holidays in Los Angeles and will let fans in other parts of the world check it out Sunday night (Jan. 6). ‘Legion of the Black’ will be available over a 24-hour period beginning at 12AM PT/3AM ET at the band’s Facebook page , with fans having the option to share movie clips, answer trivia, take polls and potentially speak with members of the band. To pre-order the Sunday Pay-Per-View for $4.99, click here . The film and album concept come from the mind of singer Andy Biersack. The vocalist told Billboard , “I’ve always been a big fan of utopian, future, new world stories — ‘V for Vendetta,’ comic books, graphic novels. It’s not really an anti-religion story; more than anything it’s based on the concept of the five of us in the band as these Che Guevara, rebellious leaders unified against this big church/government bad guy.” The vocalist says that after an initial false start on the album, producer John Feldmann asked him what was inspiring him and they took his short story idea and started working it into an album. ”This is new ground for the band,” says the singer. “It’ll take a little bit of time for people to understand what this is, so the intent is to take it as many places as we can.” The ‘Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones’ album is due Jan. 8.
