SoundgardenWorld.com Soundgarden ’s new album ‘King Animal’ is due out on Nov. 13 and fans received their first taste of what’s in store with the disc’s debut single ‘Been Away Too Long.’ According to the band, the new tune is a very literal take on their extended absence and return to music. In a new interview with OnstageWeb frontman Chris Cornell and bassist Ben Shepherd sat down to talk about their break up, reuniting, the first single, and today’s music scene. The first thing they tackle is the single ‘Been Away Too Long. When asked what it really means, Cornell responded, “It means that a group, in this case personified by Soundgarden, has been away and the length of that away time has suddenly become maybe overextended.” He continued, “So been away too long, like thank God we’re back now. It seems like it might have been a little bit too long for us to be gone.” On the reason why Soundgarden broke up in 1997, Cornell explains it was everything but the music, saying, “We broke up because we were bored of the periphery, all of the things that are outside of the band playing music and writing songs, playing shows – that part got really boring.” Shepherd chimed in as well, adding, “The part that is outside of writing songs and playing shows. So it wasn’t the Soundgarden thing, it was the outside of Soundgarden.” In the absence of Soundgarden, both seemed surprised that a new rock revival hasn’t taken over. “I always expected that after we broke up or even maybe before we broke up that there should be or would be some very vital scene, numerous interesting rock bands that are kind of taking the history of rock music and making it their own,” explained Cornell. “Updating it and making it their own vital thing like a child with a new toy.” Check out the full interview with Cornell and Shepherd below. Victory Records In our recent in depth interview with Taproot frontman Stephen Richards, he spoke candidly about his bout with seizures and how his medical issues have affected touring and his performance onstage. The band released their fifth studio album, ‘The Episodes,’ earlier this year, and Richards tells Loudwire that his health condition will likely influence the songwriting on Taproot’s future music releases. “I think from now on, unless they give me some miracle pill that fixed everything, it will definitely lend itself to upcoming material.” He goes on to speak about ‘The Episodes’ by saying, “The crazy thing is, this record we wrote in late 2006 early 2007 and then we put it on the back burner to release our fourth record, ‘Our Long Road Home,’ so we’ve been sitting on it for a while. We wanted to make sure we got it out and Victory Records was totally on board and really supportive of us.” Richards continues, “It’s kind of weird that literally at the beginning of the record is a guy waking up not knowing where he is and what the hell is going on, and then when we released the record I collapsed in the kitchen and woke up in a hospital around people I wouldn’t expect to see, not sure if I had made it through alive or what was going on. So it’s been kind of a trip with the parallel of my own situation personally. I’m just hoping I’m still alive and everything’s real. Razor & Tie Nonpoint have just released their self-titled seventh studio album. The new disc is the first to feature guitarists Rasheed Thomas and Dave Lizzio as well as bassist Adam Woloszyn. Nonpoint come out swinging with the first track ‘Lights, Camera, Action.’ Frontman Elias Soriano’s signature vocal style of a quick deliverance of lyrics accompanies by some serious melody. Speaking of melody, Soriano shows off his melodic vocals in the track ‘The Way I See Things’ as he sings the chorus, “ The way I see things / I could use a serious change of scenery / The ways I see things / I’d be better off / Better off if I leave .” Even though the song ‘I Said It’ is not the strongest example of Nonpoint’s usual catchy chorus on the album, it does show another level of Soriano as the track displays aggressive screaming and the vigorous drums skills of Robb Rivera. The lead single off of the album, ‘Left For You,’ is filled with deep riffs, deep bass lines and soaring vocals with a certain softness. Two minutes into ‘Left For You,’ Soriano slows the pace down as he croons, “ I’m trying to lead you away but i can’t / ’cause trying to keep us together is something that i know i can’t… do / I know I can’t do / Without you .” Additionally, the album is filled with faster-paced anthems where Soriano spits out lyrics with venom on tracks like ‘International Crisis,’ ‘That Day’ and ‘Temper,’ which features lyrics that shout as much warning as the galloping drum patterns and stern guitar solo and riffs. Guitarists Thomas and Lizzio also offer some enticing riffs on ‘Go Time’ that ring like an alarm, while Rivera shows off his serious skills behind the skins on the song ‘Independence Day,’ which is a prime example of the way Soriano merges both screams and harmony. There is a certain balance to ‘Nonpoint,’ which weaves in mid-tempo tracks that show off the melodic flow of the band such as ‘Another Mistake’ and ‘Pandora’s Box.’ Another notable track is ‘Ashes,’ which is definitely one of the more eclectic tracks on ‘Nonpoint,’ complete with Woloszyn’s tantalizing bass lines as the album ends as strong as it begins. There’s no doubt this forceful record will make you sweat and even pull through those dreadful last 15 minutes at the gym, especially since Nonpoint, both the album and band, are filled with a continuous flow of unyielding energy. ? Reprise Records Ever since a November 2008 car accident, Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has mostly been in a coma. In the meantime, the band has continued to write and tour with replacement bassist Sergio Vega. Last night, though, Deftones came closer to having Chi back than they’ve been in nearly four years, as the band invited Chi’s son Gabe onstage to perform with them in San Francisco. Deftones are currently on the road with Scars on Broadway , touring to promote their upcoming album ‘Koi No Yokan,’ which is set to be released on Nov. 13. The California-based act visited the state’s capital Sacramento last night (Oct. 10) and performed ‘Root’ with Gabe Cheng manning the bass. Gabe handled himself like a pro while playing ‘Root,’ which has a distinct bass line throughout the song, continuing at times even when the guitar, drums and vocals drop out. Fans showed an incredible amount of love for Gabe as he headbanged his way through ‘Root,’ showcasing the inherent talent from his father. After many years in the hospital, Chi is currently recuperating at home in a minimally conscious state, although he has been repeatedly fighting off both pneumonia and urinary tract infections. Kevin Winter, Getty Images We’re beginning to think that Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan may have a grudge against some of his former bandmates. Additionally, and this might be a bit of a stretch, but Corgan seems to also enjoy the occasional trash-talking session. Finally, and by all means correct us if we’re wrong, it seems possible that Billy Corgan may possess some sort of internal turmoil. We developed this hypothesis after reading a recent statement from Corgan, where he threw some ill will at some former Smashing Pumpkins members, while analyzing his personal life as well. Injecting a bit of positivity into his recent interview with SFweekly.com , Corgan described his relationships with the new Pumpkins members and how it has affected him creatively. “When you actually like each other,” Corgan explains, “it translates to the music. The difference with Oceania is, I’ve found harmony again.” This seems to be a welcome change for the iconic frontman, who compared the current lineup to various ‘classic’ Pumpkins configurations. “There’s no way to properly convey what it was like to be in that band,” Corgan says about the original lineup. “And the f—ed up stuff is 10 times more f—ed up than what the world knows. I was in love with the Smashing Pumpkins,” he says, sounding wistful. “I really believed in what we were doing. But I idealized the band — which overlooked their incredibly flawed human personas, and which now bites me in the ass, as they rear their heads for lawsuits.” He then waxes philosophically on his personal life, stating, “If somebody would have told me 15 years ago that at 45 I’d be living in a big house with two dogs and two cats, with no wife and no girlfriend, I wouldn’t have believed them. My life did not turn out the way I’d planned it. Roadrunner Records As anticipation builds for the Oct. 22 release of Stone Sour ‘s fourth album ‘ House of Gold & Bones Part 1 ,’ the band has released the video for ‘Gone Sovereign.’ P.R. Brown, who has worked on several previous Stone Sour and Slipknot videos, directed ‘Gone Sovereign.’ The performance clip begins with the band tightly grouped around Roy Mayorga’s drum kit, then once the song kicks in, the shot widens to reveal they are in a club playing for frenzied fans. The second half of the two part concept album is due next year. Singer Corey Taylor is also creating a comic book to go along with the ‘House of Gold & Bones’ albums. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” says Taylor. “I’ve always been very critical of when comics go south and basically pull the fan out of what the potential is. It’s me pretty much putting my money where my mouth is.” He is scheduled to be at New York’s Comic Con this weekend to promote the comic. Stone Sour are set to embark on a world tour at the end of this month.
