Facebook: How To Destroy Angels How to Destroy Angels are off and running with their new ‘ An Omen ‘ EP, and they’ve now unleashed a video for the standout track ‘Ice Age.’ The clip really is more of a short film, clocking in at just over seven minutes with the group isolated in a log cabin. John Hillcoat, director of such films as ‘The Road’ and ‘Lawless,’ shot the promo for the band, which finds the members primarily shot in dark profiles as singer Mariqueen Maandig sings longingly into the distance while looking outside of the cabin’s window. Meanwhile, Trent Reznor , Atticus Ross, and Rob Sheridan give the song a rustic feel with a beat up piano, lap steel guitar, and a board filled with distortion effects providing the background. As Maandig continues looking out the window we eventually see outside as the waves crash in from the ocean, but a series of visual effects begin to turn things dark, shadowy and blurry with the cold starting to set in. ‘An Omen’ has provided a re-introduction for the group, who added Sheridan to the lineup since their first EP back in 2010. The band’s first full-length record is expected next year. Theo Wargo, Getty Images As if he didn’t already have enough to do, Dave Grohl has picked up another new gig: Host for satellite radio provider SiriusXM, where the Foo Fighters frontman will be behind the mic for a limited-run series titled ‘Dave Grohl Presents Sound City.’ As astute readers have probably already guessed, Grohl’s show will tie in with his upcoming ‘Sound City’ documentary , which takes a loving look back at some of the many classic songs and albums recorded at the legendary studio of the same name. If you think devoting a film and radio show to a defunct old studio seems a little excessive, never fear: Grohl has plenty of material to work from, as Sound City played host to a long list of acts that included Fleetwood Mac , Metallica , and Tom Petty (not to mention Nirvana ) before closing its doors. “I’m so proud of the Sound City film and beyond excited for the world to see what I’ve been working on for the past year,” Grohl said in a statement announcing the show. “Even before that, though, I’m grateful to SiriusXM for giving me the opportunity to share all this great music and to let people know what got me excited about Sound City in the first place.” ‘Dave Grohl Presents Sound City’ is scheduled to debut this Thursday (Nov. 29) at 4pm ET on Classic Vinyl, channel 26, with subsequent shows airing on different channels. Carlos Alvarez, Getty Images Who better to play out the trials and tribulations of an R&B legend on the big screen than another musician, right? At least that’s what the creators of the upcoming biopic on Marvin Gaye seemed to have in mind when they cast rocker Lenny Kravitz for the iconic part. Over the past few years Kravitz has quietly added ‘actor’ to his repertoire of artistic skills. Although this will serve as his first leading role, Kravitz does have some acting experience under his belt. In the past few years he’s played parts in movies like ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Precious’ and has a handful of additional movies he’s contributed to sitting in post-production or currently being filmed. According to ABC News , the Marvin Gaye biopic will focus on the troubled artist’s life during the early ‘80s when he was in Europe and trying to kick his drug habit and revive his music career. Gaye’s life came to a tragic end in 1984 when he was shot by his father. Although Kravitz has not yet commented on his involvement, his publicist has confirmed his role. The biopic is set to be shot next year and directed by Julien Temple. Kravitz’s most recent album, ‘Black and White America,’ was released in August of 2011. Jo Hale, Getty Images There is never a dull moment when it comes to former Queens of the Stone Age bassist Nick Oliveri. The musician has not only rejoined Kyuss Lives! , but he also has contributed vocals to the upcoming QOTSA album. It was previously announced that Dave Grohl would play drums on the new QOTSA disc, while Trent Reznor would be contributing to a track, as well. Now, Oliveri is returning to the fold, even if in a limited capacity. A post was issued on the Mondo Generator Facebook page. Oliveri is the frontman and bassist of that band. The update read as follows: NEWS: Nick has re-joined Kyuss, and has recently recorded his vocals on a new Queens of the Stone Age song! Stay tuned. Oliveri split with QOTSA in 2004, and not exactly in amicable fashion. Earlier this year, QOTSA frontman Josh Homme appeared on a Mondo Generator track , so it seems as if fences have been mended between the two, to some extent. Oliveri also left Kyuss Lives! to avoid the ugly court battle over the name, which was taking place between the current and former members of Kyuss. Maybe all the legal hatchets in the incestuous ranks of QOTSA and Kyuss are being buried? Oliveri was also in the news recently when he engaged in a standoff with cops after a domestic disturbance. He took a plea deal and avoided jail time. Theo Wargo, Getty Images There’s lots of activity in the Avenged Sevenfold camp right now. The band released the new song ‘Carry On’ for ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II,’ and the boys even make an appearance in the game, post-credits, as an animated A7X, playing the song. But most recently, word has come that the band is hard at work on a new album. In a new interview, frontman M. Shadows sheds a little light on the sonic focus of its new album and how their new drummer is fitting in during the recording process. The group’s new drummer, Arin Ilejay, is manning the kit on the upcoming album, something former Dream Theater skinsman Mike Portnoy did for ‘Nightmare’ after the band’s original drummer The Rev tragically passed away. Portnoy’s exit from his post as temporary touring drummer was a bit dramatic, but the band has moved on and is enjoying its experience with Ilejay pounding skins. “A lot of it’s been us refreshing him on what our influences are and where we’re coming from as a band,” Shadows tells Revolver about how the process is coming along. “There’s a lot of things that he was never brought up on that we have to quickly get him acquired to such as Pantera and Metallica and Slayer and Megadeth and we’re introducing him to these records that were literally the biggest records when we were growing up. Just records that you have to know. He’s much younger and he grew up listening to Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet for My Valentine , ya know?” The band remedied Ilejay’s “newness” by handing him Pantera’s ‘Far Beyond Driven and Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’ as required listening and homework. Shadows said that A7X told him, “‘Learn these albums. You need to learn these things” because when we’re talking about ‘groove metal,’ we’re not talking about some Warped Tour band. We’re talking about f—ing Pantera! We’re talking about Black Sabbath , ya know? So we’re getting him acquired to that and I think he’s learning really quickly what we’re looking for. We’re not looking for an overly technically proficient drummer. We’re looking for a guy that knows how to fit the song and be in the groove and play the right thing in the right moment. It’s been cool. It’s been good. He’s been doing really, really well.” All in all, Shadows declared, “I wanna write a classic metal record, a classic rock record in 2013. So that’s our goal.” Meanwhile, Shadows revealed to Revolver that the satellite radio channel Ozzy’s Boneyard factored into the writing of ‘Carry On’ for inclusion on the recently released ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ video game. Shadows and guitarist Synyster Gates were listening to the channel a lot when they got the call from the video game developers to do the song. “They asked for something uplifting and uptempo,” the singer recalled. ‘We were like, ‘Dude, let’s do a song like if a modern band was gonna do something that was gonna be played on Boneyard.’ Like, very thrash but melodic, more thrash riffs with a more Maiden-type vocal. So we just had fun with it. We only had a couple days to put the song together.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/avenged-sevenfold-perform-carry-on-as-characters-in-call-of-duty-black-ops-ii/” title=”See Avenged Sevenfold as Characters in ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II'” align=”center”]
