Green Day Featured in Two Documentaries Screening at South By Southwest Film Festival

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Those checking out the film festival portion of Austin’s South by Southwest will get plenty of Billie Joe Armstrong on the big screen. The Green Day frontman will appear in two separate movies, with ‘Broadway Idiot’ receiving its premiere during the event. The Doug Hamilton-directed ‘Broadway Idiot’ focuses on Armstrong’s involvement in the ‘American Idiot’ stage production, which actually starred the vocalist on select dates during its run. A trailer for ‘Broadway Idiot’ can be seen below. The other Armstrong-starring flick is ‘ ¡Cuatro! ,’ which Green Day shot while they were recording their recent album trilogy. A highlights special aired on several cable networks in December, with the full film recently screening at the Aspen X Games as part of their film festival. In addition to the two Green Day-related flicks, there are a number of other music acts featured in films screening at South by Southwest. Dave Grohl ‘s ‘ Sound City ‘ will air at the festival, coinciding with the singer’s participation as the music portion of South by Southwest’s keynote speaker. Billboard also reports that ‘Artifact,’ a 30 Seconds to Mars documentary, will air during the film festival. The movie details the band’s battle with their record label and the subsequent recording of their hit album, ‘This Is War.’ The movie was directed by Bartholomew Cubbins (aka singer Jared Leto). The festival will also feature movies centered on Bikini Kill singer Kathleen Hanna (‘The Punk Singer’) and a Snoop Dogg movie following his spirituality called ‘Reincarnated.’ Watch the ‘Broadway Idiot’ Trailer [button href=”http://loudwire.com/dave-grohl-keynote-speaker-2013-south-by-southwest-conference/” title=”Next: Dave Grohl Named 2013 South by Southwest Keynote Speaker” align=”center”]

Green Day to Screen ‘¡Quatro!’ Documentary at 2013 Aspen X Games

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Green Day fans got their first taste of the band’s ‘¡Quatro!’ documentary late last year when VH1, MTV2 and Palladia aired a highlights special featuring clips from the film. Now fans will get to see ‘¡Quatro!’ in its entirety when it screens at the upcoming X Games competition being held in Aspen Jan. 26. In addition to the various sports, the X Games has launched their own film showcase in recent years to provide those attending with other forms of entertainment and Green Day’s ‘¡Quatro!’ will be one of the featured movies at the Wheeler Opera House. The movie itself documents the massive undertaking that was the completion of Green Day’s album trilogy. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong says in the trailer for the film, “This is the first time in 20 years that we are actually inviting people into the process. This is not a fully thought out thing yet,” to which an unseen band members says off screen, “This is like sending the baby down to the corner to buy cigarettes.” The timing was right for a project like this because it showed the band at their most vulnerable. As Armstrong recalls, “We were so used to presenting ourselves before, but this time we had nothing. It was back to that ‘prove it to me’ [attitude].” In coordination with the screening, the band will also be answering questions. Fans may submit their queries for the group at the X Games Facebook page here . Green Day Bow Out of 2012 Voodoo Experience

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Green Day were planning to head up the 2012 Voodoo Music + Arts Experience over Halloween weekend, but given singer Billie Joe Armstrong ‘s recent entry into rehab for treatment of substance abuse issues, they’ve now bowed out of the performance. The timing has not been the best in the world for Green Day, as the singer’s meltdown at the iHeart Music Festival in Las Vegas and subsequent rehab announcement came just ahead of the release of the group’s ‘¡Uno!’ album. At the time, the band issued a statement apologizing for the incident at the Las Vegas event, revealing Armstrong’s decision to attend rehab, and regretfully announcing that some of their promotional appearances would be postponed as a result. Drummer Tre Cool issued the band’s statement on their exit from the Voodoo Experience. It read: Canceling shows is something we rarely do. We never want to let our fans down, and we are grateful for all of you being understanding during this time. Meanwhile, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience organizers, Rehage Entertainment, issued their own statement on the matter. It read: We, like everyone, were looking forward to having Green Day back at Voodoo. Their 2004 performance was one of the festival’s greatest. We are obviously disappointed in the news, but realize the health and well being of Billie Joe is the most important thing right now. We wish him and the entire Green Day family the best and offer them our full support. The Voodoo Experience will go on without Green Day. The festival runs Oct. 26-28 at New Orleans’ City Park. Even without Green Day, the lineup is pretty solid. Neil Young & Crazy Horse, the Avett Brothers , Justice, Silversun Pickups , AWOLNATION, Jack White , Skrillex , and Coheed & Cambria are among the top performers on this year’s bill. Green Day’s Mike Dirnt: We Had to Put Billie Joe Armstrong’s Life in Front of Everything

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire In one of the more surprising moments of the year, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong  recently entered rehab for substance abuse problems, and now Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt has just addressed the issue in greater detail. After slinging curses at the iHeart Radio festival organizers, Armstrong smashed his guitar and left the stage . At the time, the singular reason for his outburst seemed to be frustration with having Green Day’s set time suddenly cut down by 20 minutes. The next day, though, it was revealed that there was more to Armstrong’s breakdown, as the band released a statement that the frontman would be  entering rehab . In an interview with BBC Radio 1 [via  NME ], Mike Dirnt revealed that the decision to send Armstrong to rehab wasn’t a difficult one, “We had to put the life of our friend in front of everything,” says Dirnt. There were also “signs of things hitting the fan” adding, “we hadn’t slept in forever.” Dirnt continues, “Hindsight is 20/20… it was a tremendous undertaking… It catches up with you a little bit. We definitely jumped off a moving train.” As for the future of Green Day’s musical career, Durst says, “We’re still getting ready for the next phase.” Stay tuned for more news on Billie Joe Armstrong’s recovery. In the meantime. the band recently released the album ‘¡Uno!,’ with the rest of the trilogy coming in the forms of  ’¡Dos!’ next month and ‘¡Tre!’ in January. In addition, Armstrong’s previously taped appearances as a mentor on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ will begin airing tonight (Oct. 8) on NBC. Green Day Frontman’s Rehab Stint Won’t Affect His Participation on ‘The Voice’

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong may have to put aside some of the band’s promotional activities while he enters rehab for substance abuse , but his appearance as a mentor on NBC’s hit music competition ‘ The Voice ‘ won’t be one of them. Deadline reports that the musician, who was recently announced as a mentor for Christina Aguilera ‘s team, will still be part of the upcoming episodes. “We’re taped and all set,” an NBC representative stated about Billie Joe’s time on the program, which was filmed over the summer and will air in the upcoming weeks. It was a rough weekend for the vocalist, who suffered an onstage meltdown in Las Vegas Friday night after noticing the band’s set time was running low. The vocalist stopped a song to go on a tirade that included numerous expletive-filled outbursts and ended with Armstrong smashing his guitar and flipping off those he felt were responsible for the time constraint. By Sunday, the group had offered a statement that Armstrong was entering rehab to seek treatment for substance abuse. They also apologized for Friday’s outburst at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas and clarified that their set had not been cut short by organizers. In addition, the band announced that a number of promotional appearances would be affected by the singer’s treatment stint. Green Day’s ‘¡Uno!’ album arrives in stores tomorrow.
