Olympic Swimmer Ryan Lochte Recreates Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ Album Cover

Matthias Clamer, ESPN The Magazine If imitation is the ultimate sign of flattery, then Nirvana ‘s ‘Nevermind’ album cover has to be one of the most beloved images in pop culture history. The iconic artwork has been replicated many times over the years, and Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte is the latest to pay tribute, recreating the image for ‘ESPN The Magazine’s new music issue.  The magazine has turned their focus to sports loving musicians for their latest issue, with Pearl Jam ‘s Jeff Ament recently sharing his basketball past in a piece that turned up prior to the issue’s release. Incidentally, the image of Lochte swimming with the almighty dollar in front of him seems apt as since his Olympic victories the commercial opportunities have opened up. He recently signed on to star in the reality series , ‘What Would Ryan Lochte Do?’ The ‘ESPN The Magazine’ music issue hit newsstands today (Feb. 8). Tool Receive Praise From Members of Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Gojira + More

Tool Dissectional Tool are one of the most critically praised and fan-worshipped bands in the world. The experimental quartet are musically complex, influential and incredibly original with both their music and videos. To celebrate the band (and probably to encourage them to finish their fifth studio album), some of today’s finest musicians, such as Tom Morello and Rob Trujillo , have praised the Los Angeles manipulators of sound. In an Artist Direct original column, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello recalls witnessing Tool’s very first show “There was a band called Green Jello, who later changed its name to Green Jelly, and Danny Carey was the drummer,” tells Morello. “Maynard sometimes worked with them and lived in this loft where a lot of musicians lived in Los Angeles. Tool actually had their first show in that loft! A couple of the other guys from Rage Against the Machine were at the gig too, when we had just started writing songs. Maynard had been my roommate for a while, and I had grown up with Adam. I’ll be frank. We did not have the highest expectations for what was going to occur at that loft gig and we went kind of as “friend rock” [Laughs]. They were devastatingly awesome from the very first show though. There’s no other way to say it. They were just awesome. It was unbelievable.” Metallica bassist Rob Trujillo is a huge Tool fan, and so does his son. “My little boy loves Tool!,” states Trujillo. “When I take him to school, we’re playing Tool all the time, so I definitely connect with them. There’s a lot of bass in that group, which is nice. They’re a great band for a bass player to listen to. So believe it or not, my son and I are going through a big Tool phase! It includes every record too.” Gojira frontman Joe Duplantier credits Tool for creating his favorite album and getting him addicted to it in his sleep! “’10,000 Days’ is my favorite record, raves the frontman. “The first time I heard it, I didn’t get it. I forced myself to listen to it two times in a row. Then, I fell asleep with the album repeating, and I spent the whole night with the album in my ears. Maybe that’s why I got addicted! I heard it six or seven times in one night. It got to my brain very deeply. Now, I’m addicted [Laughs].” Check out Artist Direct for more testimonials from members of Iron Maiden , Machine Head , Korn + more. Turisas Bring ‘Battle Metal’ to New York City With Support From Firewind + Stolen Babies

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Finnish metalers Turisas gave the East Coast quite a treat by bringing their fighting spirit to Gramercy Theater on Wednesday night with help from Firewind and Stolen Babies. Turisas graced the stage with their signature red and black face paint and Viking styled clothing. Their New York militia gave them a very warm welcome as the band aptly kicked off their set with ‘The March of the Varangian Guard.’ They also played ‘To Holmgard and Beyond,’ ‘A Portage to the Unknown’ and asked fans to raise their beers to their drinking song ‘One More.’ Frontman and warlord Mathias Nygard had complete command of the stage while performing, as he looked his legion of fans eye to eye. Even though many of the members are fairly new, excluding guitarist Jussi Wickstrom, the band as a whole seemed to have great communication and energy onstage. Turisas ended the night with ‘Stand Up and Fight,’ ‘Sahti-Waari’ and of course ‘Battle Metal.’ which made their fans a very pleased bunch of mercenaries. Greek metal band Firewind took the stage and delivered some powerful vocals with new singer Kelly Sundown Carpenter. Guitarist Gus G. pulled out some blistering riffs as usual and the band as a whole had great stage presence while performing tracks such as ‘Wall of Sound,’ ‘Head Up High,’ ‘Mercenary Man’ and ‘Falling to Pieces,’ among others. Stolen Babies kicked off the night with their unique and vibrant stage presence. For a full list of dates where you can see these bands on tour, go here . Stone Sour Unleash New Song ‘Do Me a Favor’ With Lyric Video

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Stone Sour know how to set a mood, and frontman Corey Taylor certainly does just that vocally within the new lyric video for the band’s latest single, ‘Do Me a Favor.’ The track is the first single off the band’s upcoming ‘ House of Gold & Bones Part 2 .’ The clip is set against the backdrop of a desolate landscape before finally directing the action inside a dilapidated house where the lyrics, and occasional silhouettes presumably of Taylor, come to light against a tattered wall. As we learned with ‘House of Gold & Bones, Part 1,’ the story centers on a person’s downward spiral and it feels as though lyrically the brutal nature of the character’s viewpoint is definitely intact on ‘Do Me a Favor.’ Taylor opens the song belting, “ I am an anti-everything man / A scab on the lips of the lord / My caustic dismissal / Is all I need to get you to fall on your sword ,” and he later offers the thought-provoking line, “ Ignoring your history is killing your past / You might run forever if death never lasts .” As for the chorus, the criticism comes harsh. The frontman sings, “ So do me a favor / Your behavior / Is just the reason there is no savior / When your wasted / Let’s face it / There’s a side of you that knows you’re a failure / Lives for the danger / Feels like an enemy / But looks like a stranger .” ‘House of Gold & Bones Part 2′ is set to drop on April 9, and ‘Do Me a Favor’ feels like the perfect transition from what we got on the first disc to lead into the second. The band is currently on tour in support of both ‘House of Gold & Bones’ discs. Favorite Motley Crue Album – Readers Poll

Tenth Street Entertainment Motley Crue are one of the most celebrated bands in rock and they’ve certainly enjoyed a fruitful career with plenty of standout records, but which album do you consider their best? We’re asking you to let us know what was your favorite Motley Crue album in this Loudwire Readers Poll. Was it their 1981 debut album, ‘Too Fast for Love’? The disc did feature the title track as well as their longtime favorite ‘Live Wire.’ Or perhaps it was their 1983 breakout ‘Shout at the Devil,’ which began to take hold on a national level. That disc spawned the title cut, plus ‘Looks That Kill,’ ‘Too Young to Fall in Love,’ and a cover of the Beatles classic ‘Helter Skelter.’ There’s also the 1985 album, ‘Theatre of Pain,’ which featured their Brownsville Station cover of ‘Smokin’ in the Boys Room’ as well as the longtime fan favorite ‘Home Sweet Home.’ In 1987, Motley Crue gave us the raucous classic, ‘Girls, Girls, Girls,’ which featured the title track, ‘Wild Side,’ ‘You’re All I Need’ and a live version of the Elvis Presley favorite ‘Jailhouse Rock.’ There’s also the band’s stellar fifth album, ‘Dr. Feelgood,’ which gave us the title cut, plus ‘Kickstart My Heart,,’ ‘Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away),’ ‘Same ‘Ol Situation (S.O.S.)’ and the rock ballad ‘Without You.’ In the ’90s, we got two albums. The first, the self-titled ‘Motley Crue,’ is actually the only Crue disc that didn’t feature Vince Neil on vocals. John Corabi sang on ‘Hooligan’s Holiday,’ ‘Misunderstood’ and more. Neil returned for 1997′s ‘Generation Swine,’ which featured an updated version of ‘Shout at the Devil,’ plus the songs ‘Beauty’ and ‘Afraid.’ And in the 2000s, the Crue has kept things going with 2000′s ‘New Tattoo,’ a disc that spawned the single ‘Hell on High Heels,’ and 2008′s ‘Saints of Los Angeles,’ which gave us the title cut and such other favorites as ‘Mutherf—er of the Year’ and ‘White Trash Circus.’ So, with three decades worth of albums, which is your favorite Motley Crue disc? Let us know by placing your vote in the Readers Poll below: Sorry, you need to have javascript running to see this poll. Dave Grohl Explains History of Rock ‘n’ Roll on ‘Chelsea Lately’

YouTube Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl is made the most of his week-long hosting stint on ‘Chelsea Lately,’ and while he’s done a solid job with his interviewing skills, the rock frontman scored big laughs with a sketch on the history of rock ‘n’ roll. Grohl put the ‘Chelsea Lately’ crew to work, dressing them in costumes as he attempted to explain what he did and the world he comes from to the staffers on the show. The sketch introduced key figures from each era — from Elvis through Deadmau5 — with the costumes getting increasingly absurd. The sketch ended with Grohl introducing the “one true original who transcends every genre of every decade and will continue to be the future of music” — Elton John . The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was one of Grohl’s guests earlier in the week and gave the singer some friendly advice. “For f— sake, get on with it,” John exclaimed. It was during the ‘Chelsea Lately’ appearance that Elton John revealed that he had been in the studio with Grohl and the members of Queens of the Stone Age , lending a hand on a track for Queens’ upcoming disc. ‘ Chelsea Lately ‘ can be seen weeknights at 11PM ET/10PM CT on the E! network.
