Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell Joins Sammy Hagar for ‘Man in the Box’ at Birthday Bash

Kevin Winter / Frazer Harrison, Getty Images Sammy Hagar knows how to throw a bash, and it helps when you make sure that Alice in Chains singer-guitarist Jerry Cantrell is on the guest list. Cantrell made a guest appearance at Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina (Oct. 13) to take part in Hagar’s 65th birthday celebration. As it was Hagar’s special night, he was able to invite Cantrell onstage and jam through the Alice in Chains’ classic ‘Man in the Box.’ Also joining in the fun on the song was Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum , who kept the beat chugging along. While Hagar may not quite reach the vocal power of the late  Layne Staley during the performance (quite honestly, who can?), Cantrell appears to be on par with a blistering guitar solo and some swampy licks. The track met with rousing approval from the crowd and Hagar went in for the embrace with Cantrell after the song was complete. Cantrell has been quiet musically for most of the year. He was honored at the MusiCares MAP Fund benefit back in May and recently turned up to induct Heart into the Hollywood Walk of Fame last month. However, after a break to have shoulder surgery following last album’s tour cycle, Cantrell has been working with Alice in Chains again on a new album . Chris Cornell and Ben Shepherd of Soundgarden Reflect on Breakup, Talk New Single

SoundgardenWorld.com Soundgarden ’s new album ‘King Animal’ is due out on Nov. 13 and fans received their first taste of what’s in store with the disc’s debut single ‘Been Away Too Long.’ According to the band, the new tune is a very literal take on their extended absence and return to music. In a new interview with OnstageWeb frontman Chris Cornell and bassist Ben Shepherd sat down to talk about their break up, reuniting, the first single, and today’s music scene. The first thing they tackle is the single ‘Been Away Too Long. When asked what it really means, Cornell responded, “It means that a group, in this case personified by Soundgarden, has been away and the length of that away time has suddenly become maybe overextended.” He continued, “So been away too long, like thank God we’re back now. It seems like it might have been a little bit too long for us to be gone.” On the reason why Soundgarden broke up in 1997, Cornell explains it was everything but the music, saying, “We broke up because we were bored of the periphery, all of the things that are outside of the band playing music  and writing songs, playing shows – that part got really boring.” Shepherd chimed in as well, adding, “The part that is outside of writing songs and playing shows. So it wasn’t the Soundgarden thing, it was the outside of Soundgarden.” In the absence of Soundgarden, both seemed surprised that a new rock revival hasn’t taken over. “I always expected that after we broke up or even maybe before we broke up that there should be or would be some very vital scene, numerous interesting rock bands that are kind of taking the history of rock music and making it their own,” explained Cornell. “Updating it and making it their own vital thing like a child with a new toy.” Check out the full interview with Cornell and Shepherd below. Deftones Perform ‘Root’ Live with Son of Ailing Bassist Chi Cheng

Reprise Records Ever since a November 2008 car accident,  Deftones bassist Chi Cheng  has mostly been in a coma. In the meantime, the band has continued to write and tour with replacement bassist Sergio Vega. Last night, though, Deftones came closer to having Chi back than they’ve been in nearly four years, as the band invited Chi’s son Gabe onstage to perform with them in San Francisco. Deftones are currently on the road with Scars on Broadway , touring to promote their upcoming album ‘Koi No Yokan,’ which is set to be released on Nov. 13. The California-based act visited the state’s capital Sacramento last night (Oct. 10) and performed ‘Root’ with Gabe Cheng manning the bass. Gabe handled himself like a pro while playing ‘Root,’ which has a distinct bass line throughout the song, continuing at times even when the guitar, drums and vocals drop out. Fans showed an incredible amount of love for Gabe as he headbanged his way through ‘Root,’ showcasing the inherent talent from his father. After many years in the hospital, Chi is currently recuperating at home in a minimally conscious state, although he has been repeatedly fighting off both pneumonia and urinary tract infections. If you’d like to donate to Chi Cheng’s recovery fund, or simply stay in touch with all of Chi’s developments, head over to oneloveforchi.com . Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson Reveals the Musical Secret Behind ‘Run to the Hills’

EMI Cover your eyes degenerate Iron Maiden fans! Our beloved heavy metal deity is wearing a suit! Okay, it’s not that big of a deal, as Bruce Dickinson spoke at the IBM Smarter Business event in Stockholm, Sweden, on Oct. 10 to draw parallels between music and business. Dickinson’s address included his own experiences as a successful musician and even revealed one of his super-secret compositional strategy behind the classic Maiden track ‘Run to the Hills.’ Dickinson explained a strange day in his life to the crowd: the day he realized that people were referring to the vocalist as a “businessman.” It’s not too far of a leap, as Iron Maiden have put many of music’s greatest sonic and materialistic products, but how does the term “businessman” sit with Dickinson? “I’ve had some strange experiences in my life”, begins Dickinson, “and one of the strangest was waking up one day and discovering that people called be a businessman, which is very odd.” Dickinson goes on to describe the role that creativity has played in the mind of history’s greatest minds. “Leonardo DiVinci invents the helicopter … he imagined it and eventually it happened. Jules Verne invented the nuclear submarine, he just didn’t know about nuclear reactors. He imagined it, and that inspired generations of people to invent things. Einstein, of course, who was the kid at school who would never amount to much because he was rubbish at physics and didn’t pay any attention in class, said, ‘Imagination is greater than knowledge.’ If you can’t imagine it, it will never happen.” As for composing the legendary ‘Run to the Hills,’ Dickinson revealed the inspiration for the song came from the analysis of a television musicologist. “The program was about why the song ‘My Way’ (Frank Sinatra), was the most popular recorded song in history,” begins Dickinson. “The musicologist came along and said, ‘It’s all in the rising sixth.’” Referring to the sixth interval within a scale, Dickinson went on to give a vocal example of ‘My Way’ versus ‘Run to the Hills.’ Check out highlights of Bruce Dickinson’s IBM speech along with his vocal demonstration in the videos below. Singer Jill Janus Tells the Story of Huntress – Exclusive Video

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire It’s been a busy year for metal band Huntress with the release of their debut album ‘Spell Eater.’ In a new video, premiering right here on Loudwire, the band’s frontwoman Jill Janus talks all about the music of Huntress and their creative process. “Huntress is true heavy metal. We stay true to the roots of heavy metal, it’s fast, it’s vicious but melodic,” says Janus. “That’s the way that we write, we want to be melodic in all of our songwriting, the thrash elements, the elements of black metal and death metal and I wail. That’s what I do, I scream.” Janus also reflects on when she first met her current bandmates: “When I came to Los Angeles, I met a band named Professor and saw them perform and immediately I knew, I knew that we needed to join forces – so I begged them to listen to a demo that I had written. We rehearsed once and after that we decided to team up and Huntress was birthed.” Anyone who has seen the band live or watched their videos knows the intensity of Huntress. The song ‘Spell Eater’ was their lead single off of the debut record and fans have been hooked ever since. Check out a list of the band’s European tour dates below. Rage Against the Machine to Release 20th Anniversary Editions of Self-Titled Debut Album

Sony Legacy Rage Against the Machine and Sony Legacy are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the band’s eponymous debut in a big, big way with the incredibly deluxe release ‘Rage Against the Machine –XX,’ which will be available in several configurations on Nov. 27. The politically charged 1992 album, which meshed rap and rock in a fresh, uncompromising way that has not been adequately copied since, fused Zack de la Rocha’s fire-in-his-belly lyrical proclamations with Tom Morello’s unique, sounds-like-a-turntable guitar tone. The incendiary, call-to-arms original was released in November of 1992 and the time to celebrate its power and legacy is now. ‘Rage Against the Machine – XX’ is newly remastered and will be offered in three formulations: -The 20th Anniversary Edition Deluxe Box Set houses two CDs, two DVDs, one 12″ 180gm vinyl LP, one 40-page booklet and a two-sided poster. -The 20th Anniversary Special Edition collects two CDs and a bonus DVD featuring six tracks in an oversized softpack. -The 20th Anniversary Edition single compact disc includes three bonus tracks. Additionally, a 12″ 180gm vinyl edition–a picture disc and a facsimile reproduction–of the original LP has been remastered and will be available, sans bonus tracks. Compact Disc One of the newly remastered ‘Rage Against the Machine – XX’ will include the original album in its entirety, as well as three collectible b-sides from the era. Compact Disc Two presents the original Rage Against the Machine demo tape, which was recorded in 1991 and sold for $5 at the merch table at the band’s earliest gigs. So it’s quite an artifact and a piece of RATM history, a “must own” for collectors, since it helped the band secure its record deal with Epic. This marks the first time the entire demo tapes have seen a full official release. DVD #1 included in the Deluxe Box Set features Rage Against the Machine’s free concert in Finsbury Park on June 2010, which was a “thank you” to U.K. fans for making ‘Killing in the Name’ the U.K.’s No. 1 single during Christmas Week 2009. Also included are music videos plus live concert performance clips. DVD #2 features Rage’s debut album, focusing on live performance from 1991-1994 and includes the full set of RATM’s first public performance as well as various live, rare clips. New liner notes were penned specifically for this release by friend, fan and hip-hop icon Chuck D. of Public Enemy. If you’ve got a RATM diehard in your life, your holiday shopping just got a whole lot easier. CD 1 – Rage Against The Machine – Remastered 01. Bombtrack 02. Killing In The Name 03.
