Dave Grohl, James Hetfield + Axl Rose Among Richest Rock Vocalists

Justin Sullivan / Theo Wargo / Jason Merritt, Getty Images Being the frontman of a rock band can provide you with plenty of opportunities, including financial ones. Some rockers have benefitted more than others over the years, and Celebrity Net Worth has compiled a list of the richest rock singers, with Dave Grohl , James Hetfield , and Axl Rose among those doing well. The site compiled their list using publicly available information on salaries, real estate holdings, divorces, and endorsements as well as record sales and royalties. They then worked out a formula that subtracts taxes, manager’s fees, agents’ fees, and lifestyle to come up with their final estimate. As expected, the rockers that have been doing it the longest have amassed the biggest fortunes, with Paul McCartney leading the way at $800 million, followed by Bono at an estimated $600 million. Hard rock fans have to scroll all the way down to No. 11 on the list to find Foo Fighters singer and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, who was estimated at earning $225 million. The next highest hard rock vocalist is Metallica ‘s James Hetfield, who reportedly netted $175 million, good enough to place him at No. 17. Following closely behind is Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose, who is worth $150 million, which lands him at No. 19. Other hard rock vocalists of note inside the Top 50 include: Red Hot Chili Peppers ‘ Anthony Kiedis at No. 25 with $125 million; Iron Maiden ‘s Bruce Dickinson at No. 28 with $115 million; AC/DC ‘s Brian Johnson at No. 30, tied with Black Sabbath ‘s Ozzy Osbourne with $95 million; Pearl Jam ‘s Eddie Vedder at No. 34 with $80 million; and Soundgarden ‘s Chris Cornell at No. 48 with $60 million. Aside from McCartney and Bono, the rest of the Top 10 includes Jimmy Buffett ($400 million), Elton John ($320 million), Mick Jagger ($305 million), Gene Simmons ($300 million), Sting ($290 million), Phil Collins ($250 million), Dave Matthews ($250 million), and Prince ($250 million). Pearl Jam Play Montana Political Fundraiser + Reveal New Album Progress

Troy Augusto, Getty Images Pearl Jam made good on playing their lone political fundraiser as a full band this past weekend, packing the Adams Center in Missoula, Mont., to help out the re-election campaign of Sen. Jon Tester. The group has personal ties to Tester, as bassist Jeff Ament grew up with the senator in a small Montana town. “I can vouch for how much he cares for Montana,” said Ament at a pre-show event. “I couldn’t be prouder to be up here with the band.” The senator and his wife were seated alongside Pearl Jam fan club members watching the show. Tester told Billboard that the show was not the traditional campaign fundraiser, but they did sell some premium ticket packages. However, the Senator says the primary goal was “to get people to vote and have fun in the process. If we can get everybody to vote who is eligible, that’s really what’s most important. And then everything will turn out right.” While Pearl Jam do tend to work in a few cover songs into their sets, the band added several that were very specific to the issues at hand. They rocked through the Clash ‘s ‘Know Your Rights,’ Neil Young ‘s ‘Rockin’ in the Free World,’ and Creedence Clearwater Revival ‘s ‘Fortunate Son.’ They would also perform MC5 ‘s rocking anthem ‘Kick Out the Jams’ with longtime cohorts Mudhoney, who opened the show. As is typical, Eddie Vedder , who recently played solo for a Barack Obama benefit , took the chance to speak openly to the audience. In this case, he used the platform to discuss Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, stating, “The candidate on the other side talks as if 47 percent of people are living off the country, taking welfare and living on food stamps. The person that said that has never had the thrill or terror of walking on the tightrope without a net. He doesn’t understand that that doesn’t represent half the country. We can all agree on that. Only maybe one percent can relate to him.” Meanwhile, Mike McCready , speaking with Folha de S. Paulo , opened up about the progress of their latest album. The told the Brazilian press, “There are seven songs recorded and at least 15 ideas on which we’re working. But we’re taking it slowly. Eddie Vedder is on a solo tour. Matt [Cameron] is playing with Soundgarden , and I’m playing with Duff McKagan .” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/pearl-jam-the-fixer-top-21st-century-hard-rock-songs/” title=”Next: Pearl Jam: Top 21st Century Hard Rock Songs” align=”center”]

Eddie Vedder Rips Mitt Romney While Performing at Barack Obama Fundraiser

Gareth Cattermole, Getty Images Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder performed a short set for a Barack Obama fundraiser last night (Sept. 20) in Tampa Bay, Fla. Along with playing for President Obama and a crowd of 85 guests, who paid $20,000 per-person to attend, Vedder had some choice words for Republican candidate Mitt Romney and his recent claims that 47 percent of Americans consider themselves as victims who are entitled to government assistance. According to Rolling Stone , Vedder addressed Romney’s words during the Obama fundraiser. “It’s very upsetting to hear a presidential candidate be so easily dismissive of such a ginormous amount of the population.” As a supporter of government-funded programs and someone who benefited from those programs before hitting it big with Pearl Jam, Vedder recalled signing up for a government security guard training program. “I’m an example of someone who never made it to university,” Vedder told the crowd. “I did have this dream to be a musician. I felt that this dream had an expiration date … It was that job which allowed me to keep affording to guitars and microphones,” the Pearl Jam frontman said. “For me, it all began with that ability to get the proper training for a decent job.” President Obama went on to thank Vedder for his words, while praising the musician’s grassroots rise to fame. “For you to share that story with us, Eddie, speaks volumes not only about you but about this country,” Obama told Vedder. “That story captures better than anything what this campaign is about and what this country is about.” Pearl Jam are scheduled to play a handful of U.S. shows to round out September, before Vedder embarks on a solo tour, which begins in Las Vegas on Halloween night.
