Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil Recalls Attempt at Supergroup With Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic
Michael Buckner / Jason Kempin, Getty Images After grunge legends Soundgarden chose call it quits in 1997, the band members who helped bring the group to worldwide prosperity all ventured out into various musical projects. Vocalist Chris Cornell and drummer Matt Cameron continued their massive careers after the breakup, but guitarist Kim Thayil chose to keep a low profile. However, Thayil reveals that he had started a supergroup with Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and other prominent musicians. Following the disintegration of Soundgarden, Cornell found massive success with Audioslave, which combined the singer’s talent with the instrumental section of Rage Against the Machine . Drummer Matt Cameron also remained in the limelight after the breakup, going on to man the drums for Pearl Jam . Cameron also joined forces with bassist Ben Shepherd to form Wellwater Conspiracy and Hater, but where was Kim Thayil during this period? In a recent interview with Spinner , Thayil revealed that he had no desire to become neither a “hired gun,” nor a member of a “B-grade Soundgarden.” “I declined participation in a lot of projects and collaborations,” reveals Thayil. “I didn’t want to be part of someone else’s band or part of a collaborative effort that wasn’t something I started … I avoided playing in another heavy rock band. Which, if I’d pursued that, would have been a B-grade Soundgarden. I was perfectly comfortable denying the expected ambition of a successful pop culture participant.” Thayil lent his talents to Dave Grohl ‘s Probot project during Soundgarden’s hiatus, and worked with doom legends Sunn 0))) on their 2006 split with Japanese metal band Boris. In addition to these works, Thayil jammed with Krist Novoselic from Nirvana, Bubba Dupree from Void and Alfredo Hernandez from Queens of the Stone Age . “We were jamming on and off for a couple years but there was no singer,” says Thayil. “A lot of instrumental stuff and beer drinking.” Kim Thayil is now back with Soundgarden, who just released ‘King Animal,’ their first album in 16 years. Rage Against the Machine, ‘Know Your Enemy’ (Demo) – Exclusive Premiere
Sony Legacy Rage Against the Machine are marking the 20th anniversary of their self-title debut disc by reissuing the album as ‘ Rage Against the Machine – XX .’ To celebrate, the band is teaming with Loudwire to bring you an advance listen to one of the bonus cuts you’ll hear in the collection — a demo of ‘Know Your Enemy.’ The major difference between the demo of ‘Know Your Enemy’ (listen below) and the final version that appeared on the studio album is the absence of the guest vocal by Tool singer Maynard James Keenan during the bridge. The demo solely features Rage singer Zack de la Rocha on vocals, and offers a more stripped-down version of the tune. Like the final cut, the demo boasts driving guitar licks from Tom Morello , a killer low end from bassist Tim Commerford and pounding beats from drummer Brad Wilk. ‘Rage Against the Machine — XX,’ which can be pre-ordered here , will be available in three configurations when it arrives Nov. 27. There will be a deluxe edition box set housing two discs, two DVDs, a 12-inch vinyl LP, a 40-page booklet and a two-sided poster. There’s the special edition version with two CDs and a bonus DVD featuring six tracks in an oversized softpack. Plus, there’s the standard single-disc bolstered with three extra tracks. It should be noted that the second disc of the two-CD versions is Rage Against the Machine’s original demo tape that was recorded in 1991 and was available for $5 at the band’s merch table. One of the DVDs that’s included features a free show the band did at Finsbury Park in June 2010 as a show of appreciation for the group’s U.K. fans sending ‘Killing in the Name’ to the top of the charts at Christmas the prior year. Also included are music videos and live concert performance clips. The second DVD focuses on live performances between 1991-1994 of songs from the band’s live album and includes the full set of the band’s first public appearance on the campus of Cal-State Northridge in 1991. Morello recently stated , “We’re really psyched to be putting this out for the fans. We are blessed with having perhaps the most passionate fans to ever listen to a bootlegged recording or mosh at a show, so I want to really give them a mother lode of Rage Against The Machine history, past and present.” However, he also squashed rumors of potential new music by stating that the band had “no plans” beyond the 20th anniversary reissue. Clutch Reveal New Album Title + Dates for Late 2012 Tour
Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Clutch have been quiet as of late, but the band is ready to emerge from the studio with their latest chugging opus, ‘Earth Rocker.’ The group just completed the effort, and they currently have circled March 2013 on their calendar to release the disc. Singer Neil Fallon tells Antiquiet , “Last minute overdubs are fun — Harmonicas, tambourines (yes, we use those), claps, the odd backing vocal. Recording can be monotonous, so those unintended moments can be a lot of fun. It’s kind of like kindergarten music class, but with beer. And sometimes the spontaneity of a last ditch idea breathes a lot of life back into a song that we’ve been beating up for weeks on end. A looming deadline can be a great muse!” As for the sound, the frontman adds, “It has a lot in common with ‘Blast Tyrant’ in that Machine’s production techniques are really unique. It differs from ‘Blast Tyrant’ and a lot of other Clutch records in that, overall, the songs are faster and concise.” With the record ready to go, Clutch will get their live chops in order. The band has booked a handful of late October/early November shows in the Midwest, and will also take part in a late year holiday tour in the period between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. After that, the group will head to Europe for January and February dates before ‘Earth Rocker’s’ March release.
