Dave Grohl on Directing Soundgarden Video for ‘By Crooked Steps’

Soundgarden: Official Instagram Foo Fighters have had their fair share of humorous, lighthearted videos over the years, but Dave Grohl took advantage of a break in his schedule to try to bring some of that same levity to one of his favorite bands — Soundgarden . Grohl recently directed  Soundgarden’s ‘By Crooked Steps’ video and he told Fuse that the clip was something that came to mind in his head the first time he heard the song. “I’ll just make a video in my head while I’m listening to the song, and I didn’t know if it was gonna be a single or if they wanted to make a video or what, so I just wrote an email,” recalls Grohl. “I called my manager and I said, ‘I think I have an idea for a Soundgarden video.’” The Foo frontman says the next step was pitching it to the band. He adds in Fuse’s video interview (seen below), “I wrote out the idea and I sent it to the drummer [Matt Cameron] and he said, ‘Yeah, that’s kind of cool. I don’t really know if we’re gonna make a video.’ And so we kind of made them make the video.” Speaking about getting the band up on Segways to portray a “gang,” Grohl says, “For Soundgarden to do something like that, they’re not known for their ‘wicked’ sense of humor. Although, they are really f—ing funny people. You would never know this, but super dry and hilarious. But the idea of them on the Segways was like, ‘You know, it could work.’” The video for ‘By Crooked Steps’ can be seen here . Chris Cornell’s Brother Peter Cornell Releases New Music

YouTube Sibling rivalry can be tough, but it looks as though there’s nothing but love within the Cornell family. Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell may be a superstar, but the rocker is happy to salute his brother Peter, who is also a singer/songwriter. During the Cornell brothers’ first ever appearance ever together onstage together in 2011, Chris introduced Peter stating, “He was that guy for me. He was the guy that was the coolest person on Earth. He was also the guy, cause I was little, that he would beat the s— out of anybody if they f—ed with me.” Chris also credited Peter with turning him onto some great music at a young age. Now, Peter has released a couple of new songs via SoundCloud players. ‘Madman’ is a foot-stomping, bluesy rocker and it’s clear from listening that Peter and his brother Chris share vocal similarities. ‘Insides,’ meanwhile, also has some of that bluesy delivery that ‘Madman’ has. Soundgarden Unveil ‘By Crooked Steps’ Video Directed by Dave Grohl

VEVO Nothing says badass like a “gang,” but director Dave Grohl takes a little bit of a sting out of those troublemaking lads from Soundgarden by having them cruise the streets on Segways in the band’s latest video for ‘ By Crooked Steps .’ Grohl, whose own band the Foo Fighters have had their fair share of offbeat and funny clips, puts his stamp on the clip with his own sense of humor. The musician-director has the Soundgarden bad boys park their Segways, stroll into a club and immediately confront the laptop DJ whose spinning tunes for those in attendance. The frightened DJ scurries away before Soundgarden take the stage and truly rock the audience with their plugged in instruments. But the DJ won’t be defeated as of yet, calling the cops on the Segway-riding toughs. The band eventually eludes the cops and escapes the venue, but they’re not totally off the hook as a slow-speed police chase follows before they finally give up. It pays, however, to watch to the very end of the clip for a special guest cameo from a certain EDM superstar posing as the arresting officer. Soundgarden are currently in the midst of their first North American tour of 2013, promoting the ‘King Animal’ album. They’ve also signed on to play the Rock on the Range festival in May. Watch Chris Cornell Perform at President Obama’s Commander-in-Chief’s Ball

YouTube President Obama began his second term with his inauguration earlier this week and with the ceremony came a number of galas . Soundgarden ‘s Chris Cornell , one of Obama’s many supporters, was invited to perform at the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball, which recognized Medal of Honor recipients and Wounded Warriors, and video footage of his entire performance has surfaced online. Cornell, armed with an acoustic guitar, took the stage to perform a trio of cover songs. However, with some microphone problems on the guitar, the set really provided a spotlight on his voice. The vocalist took the stage, telling the audience, “I’ve got to say this is an honor to play for you guys and to celebrate this event, the re-election of President Obama, so thank you so much.” From there he launched into ‘(What’s So Funny Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding,’ the Nick Lowe song popularized by Elvis Costello. After making note of the microphone issue, he would perform his other two tracks with a little more amplification for the guitar. First came a powerful performance of the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic ‘Long As I Can See the Light,’ which really showed off the wonderful rasp and emotion in Cornell’s voice. He followed with what he called “a song of hope or an impossible dream maybe” — a cover of John Lennon ‘s ‘Imagine.’ The full almost ten-minute performance can be seen below. Cornell would return later in the evening with the full Soundgarden lineup to perform at the Inaugural Ball , doing a three-song set of ‘Been Away Too Long,’ ‘Outshined’ and ‘Rusty Cage’ for those in attendance.
