Top 20 Songs: Week of January 20-26, 2013

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire We’ve got some changes atop the Loudwire Top 20 Countdown this week as Avenged Sevenfold ‘s stay in the top spot was brief. The band’s ‘Carry On’ slips back to No. 2 this week, making way for Volbeat ‘s ‘Heaven Nor Hell’ to take over the No. 1 position. Both All That Remains ‘ ‘Stand Up’ and Chevelle ‘s ‘Same Old Trip’ hold steady in the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively, while Deftones inch a notch closer to the top with ‘Tempest’ rounding out the Top 5 on this week’s countdown. Two former Top 5 songs take the biggest tumble this week. Soundgarden ‘s ‘Been Away Too Long’ drops from No. 10 down to No. 15, while Slash ‘s ‘Standing in the Sun’ hangs on the countdown at No. 20 after spending last week at No. 15. Meanwhile, Halestorm had the most meteoric rise, as the band climbed five big notches from No. 19 to No. 14 this week. The countdown also provided one new entry as Three Days Grace spent one week away before returning to the chart with the new track, ‘The High Road,’ which arrived at No. 17. Soundgarden Talk Future Albums, Perform at Inaugural Balls

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire After two-plus years of touring and a new album, there’s good news for Soundgarden fans as it looks like their reunion is one that will continue. Frontman Chris Cornell revealed the band’s status update in a new interview with Billboard . The vocalist explained, “I don’t see any reason why [we wouldn’t continue]. I think the overall attitude about keeping it going and the way we want to treat it to keep it going is really good. There’s nothing stopping us from continuing to make records and continuing to play shows, that’s for sure.” Cornell added that even though their ‘King Animal’ album is still fairly new, the band members continue coming up with new ideas. He revealed, “We had a good experience making this album and since we’ve come back together everything has been kind of that way. There hasn’t really been any of the tension, specifically surrounding the peripheral stuff. And I think that’s as simple as us making the conscious decision to not be influenced by anything other than what the four of us want to do and not putting a business version of a timeline on it. Our attitude is that we’re doing this because we love it.” Soundgarden are currently on tour , but made a detour to Washington, D.C., Monday for pair of President Obama inauguration galas . Cornell played a solo set at the Commander-in-Chief’s ball that included covers of Elvis Costello’s ‘Peace, Love & Understanding,’ Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Long As I Can See the Light’ and John Lennon’s ‘Imagine.’ He would later return with the full Soundgarden lineup to perform ‘Been Away Too Long,’ ‘Outshined’ and ‘Rusty Cage’ at Obama’s Inauguration Ball . Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil Addresses Reunion ‘Cash Grab’ Accusations

Cindy Ord, Getty Images Soundgarden ‘s reunion continues to be a fruitful one, with the band finally offering their first new music in 16 years with the ‘ King Animal ‘ album. And while there are some that may question their motives for getting back together, guitarist Kim Thayil says it was truly a quite organic happening. Thayil told The Phoenix that the band re-opened discussions over the lack of direction where their catalog was concerned, with the group not necessarily having any web presence for the better part of a decade. After getting past the business, the band members then discussed the idea to play and record again. There were some in the media (as well as one of their peers, Billy Corgan ) who argued that their initial return was a “ cash grab ,” which Thayil debates. The guitarist says, “How is it a cash grab? Since when is there money in making records anymore [laughs]? I mean, playing Lollapalooza was a one-day payday, but … and by the way, since when do we need money? We’re not like the Afghan Whigs or Pavement. We had a fairly successful career. Matt Cameron played in Pearl Jam for God’s sake! What the hell does he need to spend another, you know, 20 hours a week dedicated to writing and rehearsing Soundgarden songs and tending to Soundgarden’s business? He’s doing just fine thank you.” Thayil credits Matt Cameron for starting the creative process with tracks he wanted the band to check out that didn’t quite fit Pearl Jam. He adds, “I think for Matt it’s really just a labor of love and it’s a great creative outlet for him. He wanted to see Ben [Shepherd] and I playing again and Chris [Cornell] writing new Soundgarden songs. I don’t think Chris needs the money. It seems like he did pretty well with Audioslave and his solo career.” In related news, Soundgarden has returned to the road to support the ‘King Animal’ album. As part of the trek, fans now have a chance to purchase special meet-and-greet packages to hang out with Chris Cornell at their tour stops. A pair of tickets are being auctioned off for each date with the proceeds going to the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation, which was recently launched with the goal of protecting vulnerable children. The organization tackles such issues as homelessness, poverty, neglect and abuse. To get your tickets, meet Chris Cornell and support the foundation, visit the Luminary Lane website here . Chris Cornell and Soundgarden to Perform at Commander-in-Chief’s Ball + Inaugural Ball

Chris Hyde, Getty Images Although Soundgarden are in the midst of their current North America tour run, the recently reunited rockers just added a very special appearance to their itinerary. Frontman Chris Cornell has signed on to perform at the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball, helping President Obama and Vice President Biden honor U.S. armed forces, while all of Soundgarden will be providing entertainment at the Inaugural Ball on the same day. Scheduled for Monday, Jan. 21, at the Washington Convention Center, the Commander-in-Chief’s Ball will recognize Medal of Honor recipients and Wounded Warriors with a guest list that includes both active duty and reserve military. In addition to Chris Cornell, the entertainment portion of the evening includes artists and celebs like Alicia Keys, Brad Paisley, Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Hudson. Things get turned up a few notches for the Inaugural Ball, which will feature several artists,  including Soundgarden, performing on multiple stages. An all-star cast of stars will join Soundgarden in the celebration, among them Stevie Wonder, Usher, Katy Perry and Smokey Robinson. Many of the artists performing have played a role in helping President Barack Obama get re-elected, including Cornell. Back in September, he joined a rally for President Barack Obama in Des Moines, Iowa, and performed a moving acoustic set. The Inaugural Ball serves to celebrate and unify Americans across the nation from community leaders to grassroots volunteers and elected officials. In addition, U.S. military around the world will be invited to join in the celebration through a live broadcast and everyone is invited to tune in here for a live stream. Soundgarden Recruit Dave Grohl to Direct Video for ‘By Crooked Steps’

Soundgarden: Official Instagram When Dave Grohl isn’t working on his ‘Sound City’ documentary and jamming with Foo Fighters , Queens of the Stone Age , Them Crooked Vultures, his former Nirvana bandmates or Paul McCartney , he’s hanging out with his friends in Soundgarden to direct the band’s latest video. Perhaps the hardest working man in the world of rock, Dave Grohl’s latest project is behind the camera, directing Soundgarden’s upcoming video for ‘By Crooked Steps.’ Not a great deal of information has been released about the video’s concept, but through a number of pictures posted on Soundgarden’s Instagram page , ‘By Crooked Steps’ will showcase a biker theme. Following a motorcycle club called “Crooked Steps,” the patches on the back of biker gang members depicts the grim reaper armed with his trusty scythe, and if you look closely, you’ll even see some patches with a middle finger flipping the bird. Scenes depicted in the available still images show frontman Chris Cornell playing a rousing game of cards, some seedy dive bar moments and shots of Soundgarden performing ‘By Crooked Steps.’ Soundgarden are set to embark on a 2013 North American tour, beginning in New York City on Jan. 16 and concluding in Los Angeles on Feb. 16.
