Kevork Djansezian, Getty Images It was a busy weekend for Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello , who joined Bruce Springsteen and friends at the MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony on Friday (Feb. 8) and then took part in the final performance of the 2013 Grammy Awards Sunday night (Feb. 10). Morello was part of an all-star collaboration fronted by Grammy host LL Cool J and Public Enemy’s Chuck D. on a song called ‘Whaddup’ off LL Cool J’s new album. Rounding out the five-piece was some nifty scratching from DJ Z-Trip and some dexterous beats from Blink-182 ‘s Travis Barker . Though Morello was mostly in the background on the track, he did come to the forefront for some serious shredding midway into the song. The new track was an interesting song, offering bits of throwbacks throughout from Chuck D.’s repetitious “Hear the drummer get wicked” to Z-Trip spinning a sample of LL Cool J’s ‘Rock the Bells.’ In addition, LL Cool J through in a nod to the late Adam Yauch , shouting “MCA forever” before running off a few lines of the Beastie Boys ‘ ‘No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn.’ However, in a lame move, the end of the song was cut off by sponsorship mentions and a quick cutaway, presumably to keep the length of the show on time. The performance concluded a night which also featured stellar performances from the Black Keys , Jack White , fun. , and tributes to late musicians Bob Marley and Levon Helm . MTV reports that Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker will help rock out a performance that features Grammy host and rap great LL Cool J , Public Enemy leader Chuck D and turntable titan DJ Z-Trip. While it was not revealed what the five-piece would be performing at the Grammys, it will likely be an amalgamation of songs pulling from all of the performers’ strengths, so don’t be surprised to get some rock, rap and electronic hybrid by the time is all said and done. The newly announced performers join a lineup that already includes music guests Justin Timberlake, fun., Taylor Swift, Jack White, the Black Keys , Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, Sting, Bruno Mars, Miguel, Wiz Khalifa, Hunter Hayes, Kelly Clarkson, Frank Ocean, Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Maroon 5, Alicia Keys, Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard, Mavis Staples, Zac Brown, T-Bone Burnett, Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley. Music’s biggest night will also feature presenters Dave Grohl , Prince, Keith Urban, Ryan Seacrest, Ne-Yo, Beyonce, Hunter Hayes, Carly Rae Jepsen, Katy Perry, Kaley Cuoco, Neil Patrick Harris, Faith Hill, Jennifer Lopez, Tim McGraw, and Pauley Perrette. The 55th Annual Grammy Awards will air this Sunday night (Feb. 10) at 8PM ET/PT on CBS. November 24th, 2012 Metalkult Trixie Textor, Getty Images With the 20th anniversary edition of legendary rap-rockers Rage Against the Machine ’s self-titled debut on target to arrive Nov. 27, rumors have been swirling that the band might be planning a new album. Guitarist Tom Morello dashed any of those hopes in an interview with Billboard earlier this month, and now, he’s chiming in on why the band might not regroup for a new set. Speaking with NME , Morello stated that some members of Rage simply are “not ready” to start working on a new studio release. “When bands make albums, it’s because everybody wants to, and that’s not the case with Rage Against the Machine at the moment,” he explained. “Everyone in the band gets along very well, we consider each other friends and comrades in arms, but people sometimes don’t feel ready to do it. I don’t have one minute of one day that’s not filled with music, or politics, or family. October 1st, 2012 Metalkult Trixie Textor / Ethan Miller / Ian Gavan, Getty Images Rise Against got a little help from a couple of friends for a star-studded rendition of the Bruce Springsteen song ’The Ghost of Tom Joad’ in Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday night (Sept. 29). Tom Morello , who has spent a good portion of the summer turning up at Springsteen concerts to perform his guitar mastery on the track, was one of the guests. Morello’s band, Rage Against the Machine , also recorded their own version of the song. Morello and Rise Against vocalist Tim McIlrath have found a lot of common musical and political ground in recent years. Rise Against played Rage Against the Machine’s L.A. Rising event last year, and both musicians have spent plenty of time rallying on behalf of unions at events in Wisconsin and immigrant rights in Arizona . Morello and McIlrath also recently appeared on Occupy movement theme song ‘ We Are the 99 Percent .’ Also joining in for the powerful performance were Gaslight Anthem singer Brian Fallon and MC5 ‘s Wayne Kramer. Gaslight Anthem has spent a fair amount of time touring with Rise Against this year, and are currently opening the band’s North American trek along with Hot Water Music . There are a handful of North American dates left this month before the band heads to South America in November for three shows.
