Liz Ramanand, Loudwire So much for that Foo Fighters hiatus announced in October 2012! According to frontman Dave Grohl , work on a new Foo Fighters album is set to begin this week. Dave Grohl may be the hardest working man in rock today, having just premiered his ‘Sound City’ documentary, rolling out shows with his Sound City Players supergroup and recording a track with Paul McCartney and the surviving members of Nirvana . And instead of taking a presumed long break from his main gig, Grohl is already at work on a new Foo Fighters album. The Foo’s most recent album, ‘Wasting Light,’ was unleashed in 2011 to much acclaim, earning the band a handful of Grammy Awards. According to NME , Grohl has decided that it’s time to work on another effort. “I return to Los Angeles tomorrow to start work on a Foo Fighters record,” Grohl divulged on Feb. 19, only four months after announcing a Foo Fighters hiatus in 2012. In an earlier NME news piece, Grohl spoke of his plans for Foo Fighters after the ‘Sound City’ engagements were finished, and the frontman has since stuck with those plans. “We have a plan,” begins Grohl. “We know exactly what’s coming next, and I have the music for the next record and we’re going to start working on it once we finish doing all this stuff … And we have really awesome, big plans for the next album and I’m really excited about it.” Stay tuned for more Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters news as it continues to break. February 14th, 2013 Metalkult Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Halestorm have joined the ranks of Iron Maiden , Judas Priest , Foo Fighters , Metallica , Slayer , Rage Against the Machine and Slipknot among others in the metal and hard rock genres who can call themselves Grammy winners . But the reality of the situation is still setting in for drummer Arejay Hale. He tells Noisecreep , “We still don’t believe it. I’m still waiting for someone to tell us that we were punked. I know a lot of people get up there and say they’re shocked and didn’t expect to win, but I’m here to tell you, we were shocked and in no way did we expect to win! When you look at who we were up against, I know it’s hard to make sense of, and I think we may have been as surprised as everyone else.” The drummer adds, “Honestly, I thought Lamb of God would’ve won. What’s interesting is that they influenced the song we won for. We love Lamb of God, in fact all the other nominees are bands we grew up looking up to. There were such legendary artists in that category and maybe we’re just the ones that got picked to represent the new guard, but that’s not our call.” There have been some who’ve criticized the Grammys for rewarding the relative newcomers against their more veteran competition, but Hale has no problems with the haters questioning their victory. He explains, “I learned a long time ago that you have to embrace the hater, because it means that the band is getting bigger. Like Nickelback , I love them and I see people hate on them and all it says to me is that they have become massively huge, and what’s wrong with that? So if people have to take the time to say something hateful or mean for whatever reason, it means the band is growing more and more and that more fans are finding out about us and that’s a valuable thing.” Hale says after 16 years of playing music with his sister Lzzy , the Grammy serves as some sort of vindication that they made the right choice pursuing music as a career. February 11th, 2013 Metalkult Kevork Djansezian, Getty Images It was a busy weekend for Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello , who joined Bruce Springsteen and friends at the MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony on Friday (Feb. 8) and then took part in the final performance of the 2013 Grammy Awards Sunday night (Feb. 10). Morello was part of an all-star collaboration fronted by Grammy host LL Cool J and Public Enemy’s Chuck D. on a song called ‘Whaddup’ off LL Cool J’s new album. Rounding out the five-piece was some nifty scratching from DJ Z-Trip and some dexterous beats from Blink-182 ‘s Travis Barker . Though Morello was mostly in the background on the track, he did come to the forefront for some serious shredding midway into the song. The new track was an interesting song, offering bits of throwbacks throughout from Chuck D.’s repetitious “Hear the drummer get wicked” to Z-Trip spinning a sample of LL Cool J’s ‘Rock the Bells.’ In addition, LL Cool J through in a nod to the late Adam Yauch , shouting “MCA forever” before running off a few lines of the Beastie Boys ‘ ‘No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn.’ However, in a lame move, the end of the song was cut off by sponsorship mentions and a quick cutaway, presumably to keep the length of the show on time. The performance concluded a night which also featured stellar performances from the Black Keys , Jack White , fun. , and tributes to late musicians Bob Marley and Levon Helm . The Black Keys took home trophies for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for their hit ‘Lonely Boy,’ which they also performed during the ceremony, while also winning the award for Best Rock Album (‘El Camino’). Additionally, frontman Dan Auerbach won Producer of the Year. The Black Keys were also nominated for Record of the Year and Album of the Year, but lost out in those categories to Gotye and Mumford & Sons, respectively. Halestorm, meanwhile, beat out a slew of veteran acts to earn the Best Hard Rock / Metal Performance for their No. 1 active rock hit ‘Love Bites (So Do I).’ During their backstage Q&A in the press room, frontwoman Lzzy Hale said, “It’s an incredible genre to be a part of because rock isn’t always the most popular genre. Sometimes we’re underground, but we all work really hard on the road. We all look out for one another.” Also among the winners was Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor , who shared the award for Best Score Soundtrack with Atticus Ross. February 11th, 2013 Metalkult Kevork Djansezian, Getty Images Congrats are in order for Halestorm , who were the winners of the Grammy for the Best Hard Rock / Metal Performance at the 55th annual Grammy Awards Sunday night (Feb. 10). The full band was on hand to accept the honor during the pre-telecast ceremony, with frontwoman Lzzy Hale and her drummer brother Arejay Hale delivering the bulk of their acceptance speech. Arejay opened the speech, shocked at their victory stating, “Oh Christ, did not completely expect this.” The drummer mentioned that he had written something down that was on his phone, but he mostly went off the cuff. He thanked his and Lzzy’s parents, stating, “Thanks to our parents for turning us onto great music. Most parents want their kids to be doctors and lawyers and our parents encouraged us to join the circus.” Lzzy Hale meanwhile dedicated the award to the “Halestorm freaks,” exclaiming “Here’s to us.” She also shouted out fellow nominees Iron Maiden and Lamb of God , stating, “If it wasn’t for your inspiration … we wouldn’t have written this song and been in this category.” In addition to Halestorm, the category included Anthrax ‘s ‘I’m Alive,’ Iron Maiden’s ‘Blood Brothers,’ Lamb of God’s ‘Ghost Walking,’ Marilyn Manson ‘s ‘No Reflection’ and Megadeth ‘s ‘Whose Life (Is It Anyway?).’ In the Grammy press room, Lzzy added, “[This] wouldn’t have been possible without these people, specifically, Lamb of God. Randy Blythe Trial, Day 4: Witness Testifies in Favor of Lamb of God Frontman
February 7th, 2013 Metalkult Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com As reported, it was announced yesterday (Feb. 6) that Randy Blythe ‘s manslaughter trial in the Czech Republic would be adjourned until March 4 to accommodate a witness who is currently ill. However, it was also revealed that there would be one more witness set to testify today (Feb. 7) before the one-month break. During a session that only lasted 45 minutes, the latest witness spoke in defense of the Lamb of God frontman. According to the TV station WTVR in Richmond, Va., the witness, Lukas Havlena, who attended the 2010 concert in which Daniel Nosek allegedly suffered a fatal head injury, told the court that he contacted Blythe’s defense team this week after reading about damaging testimony against the vocalist that took place on Day 2 of the trial Tuesday. Havlena refutes accounts by the prosecution’s witnesses that Blythe was very aggressive during the concert. He said Blythe was not aggressive at all and, moreover, he was very clear to fans during the gig that they were not allowed onstage. Also today, the judge explained that it was not only the sick witness that led to the delay of the trial. He revealed that there is also testimony expected by two criminal psychologists who were unable to attend the proceedings this week, as well as additional witness. It is expected that all of them will take the stand when the trial resumes on March 4. Blythe is expected to return to his hometown of Richmond, Va., this week before returning to the Czech Republic in March for the trial’s resumption. Lamb of God are nominated in the Best Metal / Hard Rock Performance category at this Sunday’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. It is not known whether the band will attend the ceremony.
