Tom Morello Joins LL Cool J, Chuck D + Travis Barker for 2013 Grammy Performance

Kevork Djansezian, Getty Images It was a busy weekend for Rage Against the Machine guitarist  Tom Morello , who joined Bruce Springsteen and friends at the MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony on Friday (Feb. 8) and then took part in the final performance of the 2013 Grammy Awards Sunday night (Feb. 10). Morello was part of an all-star collaboration fronted by Grammy host LL Cool J and Public Enemy’s Chuck D. on a song called ‘Whaddup’ off LL Cool J’s new album. Rounding out the five-piece was some nifty scratching from DJ Z-Trip and some dexterous beats from Blink-182 ‘s Travis Barker . Though Morello was mostly in the background on the track, he did come to the forefront for some serious shredding midway into the song. The new track was an interesting song, offering bits of throwbacks throughout from Chuck D.’s repetitious “Hear the drummer get wicked” to Z-Trip spinning a sample of LL Cool J’s ‘Rock the Bells.’ In addition, LL Cool J through in a nod to the late Adam Yauch , shouting “MCA forever” before running off a few lines of the  Beastie Boys ‘ ‘No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn.’ However, in a lame move, the end of the song was cut off by sponsorship mentions and a quick cutaway, presumably to keep the length of the show on time. The performance concluded a night which also featured stellar performances from the Black Keys , Jack White , fun. , and tributes to late musicians Bob Marley and Levon Helm . Rush, Heart + Public Enemy Lead 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Class

Mike Lawrie / Mark Davis / Stephen Lovekin, Getty Images The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its class of 2013 inductees, and leading the charge are Rush , Heart and Public Enemy. There have been many fans on the hard rock and classic rock side who have been clamoring for Rush to get their due, and next year they will be among the class of new inductees. “It’s a terrific honor and we’ll show up smiling,” said vocalist-bassist Geddy Lee to Rolling Stone . “It made my mom happy, so that’s worth it.” Lee was well aware of the fan support to get them into the Rock Hall, adding, “It was a cause they championed. I’m very relieved for them and we share this honor with them, for sure.” Heart , like Rush, had been passed over on their first try, but sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson  & co. will enter the Rock Hall in 2013. Singer Ann Wilson said, “Some people have an idea of what the shape of rock and roll is supposed to look like. We’re not really it. Personally, that’s why I think it’s taken awhile … We’re always traveling and out there doing it. It can start to feel like you’re a tree falling in the forest, but nobody notices. So this kind of acknowledgement is really sweet.” On the rap side, Public Enemy became the fourth hip-hop act to be inducted, following Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C. and the Beastie Boys . The group crossed boundaries with their collaboration with  Anthrax  on the rap-meets-metal single ‘Bring the Noise.’ This year’s other inductees include singer-songwriter-composer Randy Newman, disco queen Donna Summer and blues great Albert King. Also joining the Rock Hall are Quincy Jones and Lou Adler, both of whom will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers. The 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place Apr. 18 at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater and will air on HBO May 18. Meanwhile, finalists like Deep Purple, N.W.A. and Joan Jett didn’t make the cut for the 2013 class. Beastie Boys Respond to Sampling Lawsuit

Junko Kimura, Getty Images Back in May, the day before Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch tragically passed away, a lawsuit was filed against the Beastie Boys , accusing them of illegally sampling music on 1986′s ‘License to Ill’ and 1989′s ‘Paul’s Boutique.’ The group’s lawyers responded this week, asking the suit to be dismissed. According to the Hollywood Reporter , TufAmerica claims samples of songs from the group Trouble Funk were used by the Beastie Boys on several songs. So why did the label wait so long to file the suit? Technology has advanced since the ’80s, allowing for more sophisticated analysis of where samples originated. According to the complaint, TufAmerica says the samples were “effectively concealed” to “the casual listener” and that they were discovered “[o]nly after conducting a careful audio analysis.” The Beastie Boys responded by saying that shows that their work is different than the songs they are accused of sampling, “Because Plaintiff admits that the casual observer cannot identify Plaintiff’s musical compositions and sound recordings… there can be no substantial similarity.” That’s a lot of legalese, but the bottom line in layman’s terms is the record label says the Beastie Boys used their songs without permission or payment, while the band says the samples were not recognizable, so you don’t have a claim. The judge will respond to the band’s request to dismiss the suit, although a timetable wasn’t given. The Beastie Boys’ legal team has been busy lately. The band and the estate of Yauch recently sued Monster Energy for the unauthorized use of their music in a recent promotional campaign. GWAR’s Oderus Urungus Joins Cancer Bats Onstage for Cover of Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire It still doesn’t seem real that Beastie Boys member Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch passed away earlier this year. As a part of one of modern music’s most definitive group, the man was an innovator of the highest order. There has been countless tributes paid to MCA since his death, and the latest homage was delivered with style by GWAR front-thing Oderus Urungus and current tourmates Cancer Bats , as they came together for a performance of the Beastie Boys classic ‘Sabotage.’ GWAR and Cancer Bats are currently on the road with Devildriver and Legacy of Disorder on the ‘Fate or Chaos’ tour. We were lucky enough to see the tour  ourselves in New York, along with scoring a video interview with Oderus Urungus in the flesh. Tonight (Nov. 26), the ‘Fate or Chaos’ tour comes to an end in Millvale, Pa., but on Nov. 24 in Toronto, Oderus Urungus made a special appearance during Cancer Bats’ set to perform ‘Sabotage,’ a song the band has been performing throughout the string of dates. Along with a solid showing by the members of Cancer Bats, the voice of Oderus Urungus fit the song perfectly has he projected his trademark slimy yell. Believe us when we say the cover deserves an A+. Additionally, Sum 41 have been performing part of ‘Sabotage’ during their ‘Does This Look Infected?’ 10th Anniversary tour , which also deserves a mention due to its awesomeness. Check out both memorial covers of ‘Sabotage’ in the videos below. R.I.P. Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch. Gwar Provide a Bloody Good Time at Brooklyn Tour Stop

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire When Gwar comes to town, all of the earthlings know to break out their white t-shirts and get ready for some gore, as these talented alien warlords put on one hell of a show. Earlier this week New Yorkers got a serious treat as DevilDriver, Cancer Bats and Legacy of Disorder graced the stage with Gwar at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg. As Gwar seized the stage in front of us mere mortals, we watched the band claim their first victim of the night who was none other than presidential candidate Mitt Romney (or some guy dressed up like Romney who was later decapitated). Other casualties included Adolf Hitler and Jesus Christ, just to name a few. Plus, the evening provided multiple robot/monster fights and massive amounts of (fake) blood drenching the crowd. Gwar front-thing Oderus Urungus also did not hesitate to take jabs at those humans named Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson , who were set to play New York the night after. In between the mockery and the slaughter, Gwar played favorites such as ‘Sadaam a Go-Go,’ ‘Bring Back the Bomb’ and ‘Sick Of You,’ the latter of which found new guitarist Pustulus Maximus doing some serious shredding. They also played a new tune called ‘Madness at the Core of Time,’ a cover of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and their take on  Kansas ’ ‘Carry On My Wayward Son’ among numerous others. Direct supporting band DevilDriver infected the venue with their venomous tracks. Frontman Dez Fafara sounded impeccable, despite troubles with the mic at the beginning of the set. The band also got some hair flying as headbangers belted out the words to anthems such as ‘Not All Who Are Lost Wander,’ ‘I Could Care Less,’ ‘Dead to Rights,’ ‘Meet the Wretched,’ ‘End of the Line,’ and more. DevilDriver’s vigor and energy was much too large for the minuscule stage at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Cancer Bats frontman Liam Cormier avoided the stage altogether as he spent the entire set face-to-face with the front row. These young Canadians won over a new set of East Coast fans as they pulled on the heart strings of the New York crowd, who exploded when they performed their rendition of ‘Sabotage’ by the Beastie Boys . New Zealanders Legacy of Disorder opened the night with a hard hitting set of metal madness. For a full list of remaining dates where you can have a bloody good time with these bands, check here . Beastie Boys Sue Monster Energy for Unlicensed Use of Songs; Adam Yauch’s Will Forbids His Music in Ads

The surviving Beastie Boys and the estate of late member Adam Yauch have filed a lawsuit against Monster Energy for the unauthorized use of their music in a new promotional campaign — and as the recently filed will of Yauch makes clear, the group will never agree to license its songs for ads. The Monster Energy suit springs from the energy drink maker’s use of a handful of Beastie Boys songs
