High On Fire Frontman Matt Pike Talks Metal Alliance Tour, Sobriety + More

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Frontman Matt Pike of High On Fire was the guest on Full Metal Jackie’s radio show this past weekend. Pike spoke about the band’s upcoming massive trek with Anthrax , Exodus, Municipal Waste and Holy Grail, as well as his sobriety with being out on tour. He also explains why pajamas are very important to him while on the road. Read Full Metal Jackie’s interview with Matt Pike below: High On Fire just recorded two shows in New York for a live album. The last studio album ‘De Vermis Mysteriis’ was recorded in Massachusettes. What do a bunch of guys from Oakland like so much about working on the East Coast? Well I don’t know – I overdose myself with clam chowder [Laughs] I don’t know I really like the town itself, Salem is really cool. They have graveyards, I always go into the graveyard and write the lyrics, they just had all these cool graves. I’ve been to these weird archaic, antique-y kind of s—t and they got that whole witch burning vibe there. Overall just working with Kurt [Ballou of Converge] is really cool. In the past you’ve tended to tour more with sludge and doom bands and now you’ll be on the Metal Alliance tour with Anthrax, Exodus, Municipal Waste and Holy Grail. What elements of thrash and speed metal excite you most as a fan? I kind of grew up on all of it, I grew up on hardcore punk and we’re talking old school like Black Flag and Circle Jerks, Corrosion of Conformity. Punk and metal were crossing over and that’s kind of where we got thrash from – I just grew up on that whole scene, going to punk and thrash metal shows. Anthrax was actually one of the first metal shows I went to and I’ve always liked Exodus and Gary Holt’s a hero of mine – he’s such an awesome guitar player. I’m really excited to be going on this and hopefully picking up some shredding techniques off the other players and it’ll be good to be out with Municipal Waste, too. I don’t know much about the Grails yet but I’m curious – everybody talks good about them so I’m looking forward to it. Matt, High on Fire pulled out of last summer’s Mayhem tour so you could focus on getting healthy and you’ve been pretty candid since then about sobriety. What was your biggest misconception about sober touring musicians and what changed that perspective? Well what changed it was my liver submission – I got 40 good years of partying my ass off and I had a lot of fun doing it. You get used to doing certain things if you’ve been on the road for twenty something years and you get used to your comfortable buzz every night and then all of sudden you take that out of your repertoire, you become a little more anxiety ridden and anti-social. It’s hard to get back to that page without having the substance that helps you calm your brain and your nerves. It’s a different way of living – I believe everybody should enjoy life and everybody should be able to drink for a period of time and do drugs for a period of time and f—ing do whatever they want for a period of time. It’s all about learning how to live life and I believe everbody should exercise too and everything in moderation. I wasn’t a person that could really take a lot of things in moderation – I always had to outdo everybody, it’s just kind of my personality. [Laughs] I’m doing good now, I’m feeling healthy and I’m learning how to deal with it. I still love partying, I just watch everybody else get drunk and smoke a little bit of weed and I’ll be cool. Recently you talked at length about pajamas with ‘The Village Voice.’ Oh yeah, that’s my thing man. I run to the bus, take a shower, get in my pajamas with slippers and play Angry Birds. Occasionally I’ll go out and say “Hi” to people, sign a couple of things and go back into the bus and just chill. You just answered my question. My question was going to be, what’s the most non-metal thing you do? It’s so atypical of metal that by defying metal stereotypes in doing it, it actually becomes metal. [Laughs] Yeah, well I guess I answered your question then – being in pajamas and slippers and everyone looks at you all weird, it’s kind of funny. What else is going on with High On Fire this year? Well we’re going to Europe at the end of this month – I’ll be over in Europe in February and then after that it’s the Metal Alliance tour and I can’t wait to see all the fans and play some songs for you. Full Metal Jackie will welcome vocalists Chuck Billy of Testament and Bobby Blitz of Overkill to her program this coming weekend. She can be heard on radio stations around the country — for a full list of stations, go to fullmetaljackieradio.com .

Best Kid Rock Song – Readers Poll

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Kid Rock has enjoyed a fruitful career that’s seen him enjoy success not only as a rock act, but also stepping into the worlds of hip-hop, country and pop just as easily. There’s no disagreeing that it’s hard to pin down the musician to just one genre, but some of his best songs have been rocking numbers. In this Loudwire Readers Poll, we’re asking you to determine Kid Rock’s best song. His ‘Devil Without a Cause’ album seems like a good place to start, with ‘I Am the Bullgod’ giving him some of his first radio play. That followed with a string of hits that included ‘Bawitdaba,’ ‘Cowboy’ and the rock ballad, ‘Only God Knows Why.’ After breaking big, the singer issued ‘The History of Rock’ detailing some of his earlier work and ‘American Bad Ass’ proved to be the disc’s breakout hit. Kid Rock’s ‘Cocky’ album led off with the single ‘Forever,’ followed by ‘Lonely Road of Faith’ and the crossover duet with Sheryl Crow on ‘Picture.’ The singer’s self-titled set spawned the hit song ‘Jackson, Mississippi,’ and Rock enjoyed a commercial rebound with the ‘Rock N Roll Jesus’ album, which gave us the hard-hitting ‘So Hott’ and the Lynyrd Skynyrd -influenced ‘All Summer Long,’ as well as ‘Amen.’ Rock went a little more message-oriented for the title track of the ‘Born Free’ album. That disc also spawned the college football theme song, ‘God Bless Saturday.’ And finally, the musician issued his ‘Rebel Soul’ album late last year, with ‘Let’s Ride’ being the first track to enjoy some airplay. So there you have it — 15 of Kid Rock’s most popular to choose from. Tell us which track is Kid Rock’s best song in the Loudwire Readers Poll below. Adelitas Way Take Viewers Behind the Scenes of ‘Alive’ Video Shoot

Vevo.com Adelitas Way dig further into their ‘Home School Valedictorian’ album with the disc’s fourth single, ‘Alive,’ and they’ve shot an uplifting new video for the song. To give fans a little more detail about what went into the shoot, the group has offered up a new “behind the scenes” feature. In the clip itself, the band is relegated to performance duties, but couldn’t have picked a better location for their shots. “We’re up on a rooftop and we’ve got beautiful Los Angeles behind us, man. It’s a great day. It’s a great day,” says singer Rick DeJesus. The vocalist realizes that they can just kick back and enjoy the day, as the true draw is the storyline for the clip. “The concept’s gonna crush,” says DeJesus. “It’s going to show the love that some of us have not experienced yet and some of us have, so I can’t wait to shoot it. It’ll be great.” Director Justin Baldoni offered a little more insight on where the idea came from, adding, “I loved the song and when I heard the song one of the lines that stuck out was ‘You’re the reason I fight.’ Instantly I thought of cancer and how beautiful I thought it would be to see a guy who is in love with his girlfriend, literally fighting to stay alive.” The official video can be seen here , while the “behind the scenes” feature can be viewed below. ‘Alive’ recently entered the Loudwire Cage Match Hall of Fame . Killswitch Engage Guitarist Says Leaked Song Does Not Represent Whole Album

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire There are a lot of interested ears just ready to latch onto to anything from Killswitch Engage after the return of former singer Jesse Leach , but guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz is quick to point out that the band’s one leaked track, ‘No End in Sight,’ does not truly represent their new album. The guitarist told Guitar World (excerpted by Blabbermouth ), “It’s actually the one tune that’s pretty different from the other stuff. Overall, the rest of the album is a little faster, a little meaner, a little growlier — thrashy but with lots of clean parts. We’re going a little more extreme this time.” Leach resumed his spot as the band’s vocalist after the exit of Howard Jones due to continued health issues. He was with the band this summer when they took part in the Trespass America tour. Dutkiewicz produced the band’s next album, and they’re currently mixing the disc with Andy Sneap for an expected early 2013 release. Killswitch Engage will finish the year by celebrating the 10th anniversary of their ‘Alive or Just Breathing’ album during special headlining shows in November and December. Dave Grohl Named Keynote Speaker at 2013 South by Southwest Conference

John Shearer, Getty Images Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has a little more time on his hands during the band’s hiatus , and he’ll use part of it to travel to Austin next March, where he’ll be the keynote speaker at the annual South by Southwest Music and Media Conference and Festival. Grohl will speak to the audience of industry members and music lovers Thursday, March 14, at the Austin Convention Center, which houses most of the South by Southwest’s speakers during the week. The musician should have plenty to discuss, reflecting on his experiences in two of rock’s most iconic bands — Nirvana and Foo Fighters. He’s also been one to lend a hand to other acts and almost became drummer for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers before ultimately deciding to launch Foo Fighters in his post-Nirvana period. Grohl has previously drummed with Queens of the Stone Age , as well, and is  back with that group as they prepare their 2013 release. On top of that, Grohl has spent much of the last year working behind the scenes with some of music’s biggest names on a documentary about the legendary recording board at Los Angeles’ Sound City studio. It was at the studio that the musician played drums on Nirvana’s breakout album, ‘Nevermind.’ The film, titled ‘ Sound City: Real to Reel ,’ is expected to surface in 2013. South by Southwest runs March 12-17, 2013 in Austin, Texas. [button href=”http://loudwire.com/best-foo-fighters-songs/” title=”Next: 10 Best Foo Fighters Songs” align=”center”]

Ozzy Osbourne’s Son Jack Osbourne Marries Lisa Stelly in Hawaii

Frazer Harrison, Getty Images A few days after he took to Twitter to laugh off rumors of his impending nuptials, Ozzy Osbourne ‘s son Jack made them come true by walking down the aisle with his new bride, actress and model Lisa Stelly. The UK tabloid Hello! was on hand to witness the ceremony, which took place in Hawaii on Sunday (Oct. 7) — just two days before Jack’s mom Sharon celebrates her 60th birthday  (Oct. 9), and a little more than 30 years after she and Jack’s dad Ozzy tied the knot in Maui. According to Hello!, the guest list was appropriately exclusive with fewer than 50 attendees on hand — but it was, of course, an Osbourne family event, with Jack’s sister Kelly serving as one of the bridesmaids and both of the famous elder Osbournes on hand to celebrate his wedded bliss. The wedding caps a tumultuous year for Jack, who celebrated the birth of his and Stelly’s first child in April 24, then dealt with his multiple sclerosis diagnosis just a few weeks later. “Even when I was at the hospital, we were discussing the plans,” Stelly was quoted as saying in an earlier report. “It’s going to be great. After we had the baby we decided we didn’t want to waste any more time.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/ozzy-osbourne-celebrate-sharon-60th-birthday-the-talk/” title=”Next: Ozzy to Celebrate Sharon’s 60th Birthday on ‘The Talk'” align=”center”]
