Mike Lawrie, Getty Images Scott Weiland is back in the creative spirit, working on new music, though it is not known as of yet where it will turn up. The singer is also reportedly mapping out some tour dates for 2013, with an announcement expected soon. Longtime Weiland cohort Doug Grean revealed in a Facebook posting that he was “working on new songs with Scott Weiland today,” which might suggest a new Weiland solo album is in the works. Grean previously worked with Weiland on his ‘Happy in Galoshes’ disc. In addition, Weiland’s Facebook page has a banner teasing that more dates for 2013 would be coming soon. Recently, Slash revealed that Weiland’s overtures toward reuniting with Velvet Revolver were falling on deaf ears and that he never saw a situation where he would work with Weiland again. In addition, the guitarist stated that Weiland’s sudden interest in reuniting with VR may have been spurred by him being fired from Stone Temple Pilots . As a solo artist, Weiland has been responsible for 1998′s ’12 Bar Blues’ and 2008′s ‘Happy in Galoshes,’ as well as the holiday-themed album, ‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,’ which arrived in 2011. Camp Freddy, ‘The Jean Genie’ – Exclusive Premiere From the ‘West of Memphis’ Soundtrack
Ethan Miller, Getty Images In recent years, many in the music industry have rallied around Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, more commonly known in the media as the West Memphis Three. The three men were freed from death row in 2011 after spending 18 questionable years in prison for the alleged murders of three boys. Now, their fight to bring the truth to light is the subject of the documentary film ‘West of Memphis.’ The film is bolstered with a star-studded soundtrack filled with music from some of their supporters and Loudwire is exclusively premiering Camp Freddy ‘s cover of David Bowie ‘s ‘The Jean Genie.’ Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro , one of the trio’s longtime supporters, is also a member of the all-star covers band Camp Freddy and the group was more than happy to lend their cover of ‘The Jean Genie’ to the film. Over the years, Navarro became friends with Echols, in particular, and learned that Bowie was one of the inmate’s favorite artists to listen to while serving his time. The Camp Freddy version of the track features some wailing guitar work from Navarro and Billy Morrison, along with special guest guitarist Steve Stevens, plus a thumping bass line from Chris Chaney. Meanwhile, singer Donovan Leitch Jr. displays a swagger and bravado that Bowie originally brought to the track. In addition to Camp Freddy, the ‘West of Memphis: Voices of Justice’ soundtrack, which arrives Jan. 15, features cuts from Marilyn Manson , Eddie Vedder , Henry Rollins , Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, Band of Horses , Bob Dylan , Natalie Maines and more. The soundtrack CD arrives on Jan. 15 and can be pre-ordered at Amazon or iTunes , while the film is currently showing in select theaters. Linkin Park Announce Clean Energy Promotion + Rock American Music Awards
Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Linkin Park are definitely in the giving spirit year-round, but the rockers are doing something special this holiday season by proclaiming what’s called #GivingTuesday. The day-long event, held Nov. 27, finds the band’s charitable arm, Music for Relief, supporting the work of the United Nations in giving the unique gift of clean energy solutions to people who have no access to electricity and rallying fans to donate. The idea is that fans can give a solar light, solar power for hospitals and health clinics, or Power the World’s latest clean energy tool — the Soccket — which is a soccer ball that is also a portable generator (it’s available at powertheworld.org ). You can also make a donation on behalf of a loved one, and they’ll get an e-card in return, while someone without electricity receives the safe, clean energy they need to improve their quality of life. Linkin Park have been active in supporting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative, and urge their fans to take part in the #GivingTuesday by donating at Powertheworld.org . In other Linkin Park news, the group not only performed ‘Burn It Down,’ but also walked away with a trophy for Favorite Alternative Rock Artist at the American Music Awards Sunday night. (Nov. 18). Rage Against the Machine to Release 20th Anniversary Editions of Self-Titled Debut Album
Sony Legacy Rage Against the Machine and Sony Legacy are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the band’s eponymous debut in a big, big way with the incredibly deluxe release ‘Rage Against the Machine –XX,’ which will be available in several configurations on Nov. 27. The politically charged 1992 album, which meshed rap and rock in a fresh, uncompromising way that has not been adequately copied since, fused Zack de la Rocha’s fire-in-his-belly lyrical proclamations with Tom Morello’s unique, sounds-like-a-turntable guitar tone. The incendiary, call-to-arms original was released in November of 1992 and the time to celebrate its power and legacy is now. ‘Rage Against the Machine – XX’ is newly remastered and will be offered in three formulations: -The 20th Anniversary Edition Deluxe Box Set houses two CDs, two DVDs, one 12″ 180gm vinyl LP, one 40-page booklet and a two-sided poster. -The 20th Anniversary Special Edition collects two CDs and a bonus DVD featuring six tracks in an oversized softpack. -The 20th Anniversary Edition single compact disc includes three bonus tracks. Additionally, a 12″ 180gm vinyl edition–a picture disc and a facsimile reproduction–of the original LP has been remastered and will be available, sans bonus tracks. Compact Disc One of the newly remastered ‘Rage Against the Machine – XX’ will include the original album in its entirety, as well as three collectible b-sides from the era. Compact Disc Two presents the original Rage Against the Machine demo tape, which was recorded in 1991 and sold for $5 at the merch table at the band’s earliest gigs. So it’s quite an artifact and a piece of RATM history, a “must own” for collectors, since it helped the band secure its record deal with Epic. This marks the first time the entire demo tapes have seen a full official release. DVD #1 included in the Deluxe Box Set features Rage Against the Machine’s free concert in Finsbury Park on June 2010, which was a “thank you” to U.K. fans for making ‘Killing in the Name’ the U.K.’s No. 1 single during Christmas Week 2009. Also included are music videos plus live concert performance clips. DVD #2 features Rage’s debut album, focusing on live performance from 1991-1994 and includes the full set of RATM’s first public performance as well as various live, rare clips. New liner notes were penned specifically for this release by friend, fan and hip-hop icon Chuck D. of Public Enemy. If you’ve got a RATM diehard in your life, your holiday shopping just got a whole lot easier. CD 1 – Rage Against The Machine – Remastered 01. Bombtrack 02. Killing In The Name 03.
