February 27th, 2013 Metalkult Kevin Winter, Getty Images According to a press release just sent out on behalf of Stone Temple Pilots , singer Scott Weiland has been officially been fired from the band. The troubled vocalist is no stranger to internal conflict, and it seems that those days are far from over for Weiland, as he once again finds himself out of a job. Weiland was dismissed from Velvet Revolver in 2008, and one of his former bandmates in that group, Slash , unofficially broke the news of Weiland’s latest exit from Stone Temple Pilots during an interview with Minneapolis/St. Paul radio station 93X. While discussing Weiland’s insistence that he was back in Velvet Revolver in December 2012, Slash threw in, “That’s because he got fired from STP.” Although Slash is considered a reliable source, the news was still thought to be hearsay until Stone Temple Pilots officially announced Weiland’s leave in a short press release issued today (Feb. 27) that reads entirely as follows: Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland. Strangely enough, in an interview with Rolling Stone conducted just yesterday (Feb. 26), Weiland insisted that he was still a member of Stone Temple Pilots. ”STP has not broken up,” said Weiland. “I haven’t quit. I haven’t been fired … Slash doesn’t know anything about STP. We’re talking right now about when we want to tour next … No one has ever fired anybody in STP. We’re like a family. It’s also a partnership. I started the band. We’ve always kept things going. We’ve taken time off before. They’ve done their own projects and I fully support that. No one has been fired and I haven’t quit. That’s all hearsay.” Scott Weiland is currently working on his career as a solo artist with backing band the Wildabouts. Weiland and the Wildabouts will be hitting the road on their ‘Purple at the Core’ tour, signifying that the string of dates will focus heavily on Stone Temple Pilots’ first two albums, ‘Core’ and ‘Purple.’ Weiland is also expected to perform Velvet Revolver and solo material. The trek begins March 1 in Flint, Mich. Update: Scott Weiland has responded with his own statement regarding his termination from STP: I learned of my supposed “termination” from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be “terminated” from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that’s something for the lawyers to figure out. The frontman, who made overtures about reuniting with Velvet Revolver last year only to have Slash publicly rebuke them and reveal that the singer had once again parted ways with Stone Temple Pilots , is hitting the road next month. According to Weiland’s Facebook page , the tour has been dubbed the “Purple at the Core” trek, signifying that the vocalist may be focusing his energies on the music from the first two Stone Temple Pilots albums. Weiland is billed on the tour image as “Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts,” with two other musicians appearing in the shot. In addition to the ‘Purple’ and ‘Core’ albums, the singer is expected to perform songs from his solo and Velvet Revolver catalogs as well. The tour gets underway March 1 in Flint, Michigan and continues through to a March 27 finale in Dallas. Tickets are currently available here . The singer is also reportedly mapping out some tour dates for 2013, with an announcement expected soon. Longtime Weiland cohort Doug Grean revealed in a Facebook posting that he was “working on new songs with Scott Weiland today,” which might suggest a new Weiland solo album is in the works. Grean previously worked with Weiland on his ‘Happy in Galoshes’ disc. In addition, Weiland’s Facebook page has a banner teasing that more dates for 2013 would be coming soon. Recently, Slash revealed that Weiland’s overtures toward reuniting with Velvet Revolver were falling on deaf ears and that he never saw a situation where he would work with Weiland again. In addition, the guitarist stated that Weiland’s sudden interest in reuniting with VR may have been spurred by him being fired from Stone Temple Pilots . As a solo artist, Weiland has been responsible for 1998′s ’12 Bar Blues’ and 2008′s ‘Happy in Galoshes,’ as well as the holiday-themed album, ‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,’ which arrived in 2011. Slash , in particular, says the band members see right through the ploy and he doesn’t expect a reunion with Weiland to ever happen. He tells Classic Rock magazine, “None of us have a clue what he’s talking about … We’re not buying it.” The guitar great says he’s reluctant to even give the former Velvet Revolver frontman the attention, but did not hold back on his feelings about the matter. Slash recently revealed that Weiland had been fired from Stone Temple Pilots and he’s confident that the singer is trying to publicly wedge his way back into a job. “I think he’s trying to pull off that trick of trying to get something else going on and we’re not buying it,” says Slash. “The door’s shut on this side and it’s probably shut on that side too, so he’s on his own. And he deserves it too.” The guitarist adds, “It also pisses me off because he’s put STP through so much s— over the years and put us through s— too when we were working with him. In 2008, that was all over with, so at this point, when he starts coming up with this stuff, it’s like, whatever.” These days Slash says he’s in a good place and is not looking to reconnect with Weiland. November 21st, 2012 Metalkult Scott Gries, Getty Images While the remaining members of Velvet Revolver have been rocking out with their latest solo efforts, former vocalist Scott Weiland seems hopeful about the revival of the band and his potential return as the frontman of the currently defunct supergroup. In fact, he even suggests they are set to start writing new material. In a new interview with Rolling Stone , Weiland expressed great enthusiasm for a possible Velvet Revolver reunion. ”I think it’s the perfect time for Velvet Revolver to get back together,” Weiland said. “Slash has done some great things, and I look forward to the opportunity to seeing him on my left and seeing Duff McKagan – who, in my opinion, is without a doubt one of the greatest rock’n’ roll and punk rock bass players of all time. And is still in amazing shape – is more ripped than just about any 25-year-old on the planet. And with Matt [Sorum] and Dave [Kushner] as well, who are just incredible musicians. I think that’s exciting to look forward to. It’s the old cliché, ‘If the gods of rock want it to happen, then it will.’” We’re not sure about the gods of rock but at last check, back in September, McKagan said that things with Velvet Revolver where at a bit of a stand still as they continued their search for the perfect replacement for Scott Weiland. “There’s nobody now,” McKagan reported. “I think the longer that Slash is out touring, and that I’m out touring, people will stop asking as much. Maybe once it’s settled down, we’ll find the guy.” Weiland seems very confident that he’ll once again be the band’s lead singer, and seemingly feels the rest of the band is open to his return as well. “I am completely open to it, and I know there are other guys in the band that are completely open to it. There have been some things that have stood in the way that aren’t anything that have to do with the band – just other players, whether it be agents. But now we’re sorting through things, and we want to start writing for some big film opportunities that have come our way, and try to set things up the way we set things up when we initially got together.” So for now the future of Velvet Revolver is still up in the air and, according to Weiland, his main gig, Stone Temple Pilots , are taking a break as well, freeing up a lot of his time. Weiland plans to stay busy with his solo band, Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts, with some upcoming live shows and a new studio album in the works for 2013. The Stone Temple Pilots singer recently announced that he’s now engaged to girlfriend Jamie Wachtel. The couple have been dating for about a year, and the upcoming nuptials will mark Weiland’s third marriage. Weiland gushed to Rolling Stone about his special lady, saying, “She’s the greatest thing that’s happened to me in a long, long time.” He continued to share his feelings about her, explaining, “She is incredibly beautiful in every aspect of the word. Lovely, smart, passionate.” The couple first met on a video shoot for Weiland’s Christmas album released last winter, ‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.’ Wachtel was working on set as a photographer and the two hit it off almost instantaneously as Wachtel helped calm Weiland’s nerves during the shoot with a little bit of humor. “I was leaning against this fireplace, and she’s like, ‘You might want to tuck in your belly a little bit,’” Weiland recalled. “It was around the holidays – it was after Thanksgiving, and you know how that tends to be. I was kind of caught off guard, and I started laughing and she started laughing. And I don’t know . . . something magical happened.” Weiland admits that he had pretty much given up on love before meeting Wachtel. “I had fallen in love a couple times in my life and then for a long time, I’ve been very disappointed and to the point where I’ve been resolved to the fact that possibly it would never happen again and almost accepted that it would be OK,” confessed Weiland. “And then I met her.” The two are planning a spring wedding, but before that Weiland has a handful of solo dates in late November, including stops in Pa., N.Y. and N.J.
