We got to speak with the entirety of Pig Destroyer for a rare interview, when the subject of discussion took an unexpected turn towards iconic broadcaster Larry King. With Pig Destroyer about to release their punishing fifth studio album, ‘Book Burner,’ we went in depth about the record during our exclusive interview and hit on one of their new tracks, ‘The Bug.’ Widely known for their use of samples within their music, a demonically-manipulated voice begins to recite a quote as ‘The Bug’ leads off: “This is libel, slander, defamation of character. This is a prolonged insult, a gob of spit in the face of art, a kick in the pants to God, Man, Destiny, Time, Love, Beauty … what you will. I am going to sing for you, a little off key perhaps, but I will sing. I will sing while you croak, I will dance over your dirty corpse.” “That’s a pretty famous quote from Henry Miller’s ‘Tropic of Cancer,’” says Hayes. “It’s a book from the ’30s where he’s an ex-patriot in France. He’s very much talking about how art can be offensive but still artful at the same time. That quote always struck me as kind of resonant.” Pig Destroyer guitarist and producer Scott Hull interjected with a fascinating truth about the audio used for the quote. “It’s Larry King,” reveals Hull. “He read ‘Tropic of Cancer’ for a book on tape.” Funnily enough, Hayes was unaware that King possessed the disembodied voice within ‘The Bug,’ and acknowledged that his mind was official blown. ‘Book Burner’ won’t be available to purchase until next week, but to hear ‘The Bug’ along with the rest of the new album, NPR has got an exclusive stream of the record in full. No Comments »Green Day’s Mike Dirnt: We Had to Put Billie Joe Armstrong’s Life in Front of Everything
October 8th, 2012 Metalkult Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire In one of the more surprising moments of the year, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong recently entered rehab for substance abuse problems, and now Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt has just addressed the issue in greater detail. After slinging curses at the iHeart Radio festival organizers, Armstrong smashed his guitar and left the stage . At the time, the singular reason for his outburst seemed to be frustration with having Green Day’s set time suddenly cut down by 20 minutes. The next day, though, it was revealed that there was more to Armstrong’s breakdown, as the band released a statement that the frontman would be entering rehab . In an interview with BBC Radio 1 [via NME ], Mike Dirnt revealed that the decision to send Armstrong to rehab wasn’t a difficult one, “We had to put the life of our friend in front of everything,” says Dirnt. There were also “signs of things hitting the fan” adding, “we hadn’t slept in forever.” Dirnt continues, “Hindsight is 20/20… it was a tremendous undertaking… It catches up with you a little bit. We definitely jumped off a moving train.” As for the future of Green Day’s musical career, Durst says, “We’re still getting ready for the next phase.” Stay tuned for more news on Billie Joe Armstrong’s recovery. In the meantime. the band recently released the album ‘¡Uno!,’ with the rest of the trilogy coming in the forms of ’¡Dos!’ next month and ‘¡Tre!’ in January. In addition, Armstrong’s previously taped appearances as a mentor on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ will begin airing tonight (Oct. 8) on NBC.
