Sony Legacy Rage Against the Machine and Sony Legacy are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the band’s eponymous debut in a big, big way with the incredibly deluxe release ‘Rage Against the Machine –XX,’ which will be available in several configurations on Nov. 27. The politically charged 1992 album, which meshed rap and rock in a fresh, uncompromising way that has not been adequately copied since, fused Zack de la Rocha’s fire-in-his-belly lyrical proclamations with Tom Morello’s unique, sounds-like-a-turntable guitar tone. The incendiary, call-to-arms original was released in November of 1992 and the time to celebrate its power and legacy is now. ‘Rage Against the Machine – XX’ is newly remastered and will be offered in three formulations: -The 20th Anniversary Edition Deluxe Box Set houses two CDs, two DVDs, one 12″ 180gm vinyl LP, one 40-page booklet and a two-sided poster. -The 20th Anniversary Special Edition collects two CDs and a bonus DVD featuring six tracks in an oversized softpack. -The 20th Anniversary Edition single compact disc includes three bonus tracks. Additionally, a 12″ 180gm vinyl edition–a picture disc and a facsimile reproduction–of the original LP has been remastered and will be available, sans bonus tracks. Compact Disc One of the newly remastered ‘Rage Against the Machine – XX’ will include the original album in its entirety, as well as three collectible b-sides from the era. Compact Disc Two presents the original Rage Against the Machine demo tape, which was recorded in 1991 and sold for $5 at the merch table at the band’s earliest gigs. So it’s quite an artifact and a piece of RATM history, a “must own” for collectors, since it helped the band secure its record deal with Epic. This marks the first time the entire demo tapes have seen a full official release. DVD #1 included in the Deluxe Box Set features Rage Against the Machine’s free concert in Finsbury Park on June 2010, which was a “thank you” to U.K. fans for making ‘Killing in the Name’ the U.K.’s No. 1 single during Christmas Week 2009. Also included are music videos plus live concert performance clips. DVD #2 features Rage’s debut album, focusing on live performance from 1991-1994 and includes the full set of RATM’s first public performance as well as various live, rare clips. New liner notes were penned specifically for this release by friend, fan and hip-hop icon Chuck D. of Public Enemy. Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Green Day were planning to head up the 2012 Voodoo Music + Arts Experience over Halloween weekend, but given singer Billie Joe Armstrong ‘s recent entry into rehab for treatment of substance abuse issues, they’ve now bowed out of the performance. The timing has not been the best in the world for Green Day, as the singer’s meltdown at the iHeart Music Festival in Las Vegas and subsequent rehab announcement came just ahead of the release of the group’s ‘¡Uno!’ album. At the time, the band issued a statement apologizing for the incident at the Las Vegas event, revealing Armstrong’s decision to attend rehab, and regretfully announcing that some of their promotional appearances would be postponed as a result. Drummer Tre Cool issued the band’s statement on their exit from the Voodoo Experience. It read: Canceling shows is something we rarely do. We never want to let our fans down, and we are grateful for all of you being understanding during this time. Meanwhile, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience organizers, Rehage Entertainment, issued their own statement on the matter. It read: We, like everyone, were looking forward to having Green Day back at Voodoo. Their 2004 performance was one of the festival’s greatest. We are obviously disappointed in the news, but realize the health and well being of Billie Joe is the most important thing right now. We wish him and the entire Green Day family the best and offer them our full support. The Voodoo Experience will go on without Green Day. The festival runs Oct. 26-28 at New Orleans’ City Park. Even without Green Day, the lineup is pretty solid. Neil Young & Crazy Horse, the Avett Brothers , Justice, Silversun Pickups , AWOLNATION, Jack White , Skrillex , and Coheed & Cambria are among the top performers on this year’s bill. Larry Busacca, Getty Images Frontman Dave Grohl has officially announced that Foo Fighters will indeed be taking an extended hiatus. There’s no word on when Foo Fighters will play a show or record an album again, with Grohl himself writing, “I was serious. I’m not sure when the Foo Fighters are good to play again.” As we recently reported , Grohl told a New York City crowd during his band’s set at the Global Citizen Festival on Saturday (Sept. 29) that Foo Fighters have no additional shows planned. “We’re not making a big deal out of this, but this is it,” stated Grohl. “We don’t have any more shows after this. This is it. We don’t have any ones after this. This is the show where we play as many songs as we can in a short period of time because honestly, I don’t know when we’re gonna do it again, but this is the perfect place to do it right now tonight.” Now, Grohl elaborates further in a post on Foo Fighters’ Facebook page: Hey everyone… Dave here. Just wanted to write and thank you all again from the bottom of my heart for another incredible year. (Our 18th, to be exact!) We truly never could have done any of this without you… Never in my wildest dreams did I think Foo Fighters would make it this far. I never thought we COULD make it this far, to be honest. There were times when I didn’t think the band would survive. There were times when I wanted to give up. But… I can’t give up this band. And I never will. Because it’s not just a band to me. It’s my life. It’s my family. It’s my world. Yes… I was serious. I’m not sure when the Foo Fighters are going to play again. It feels strange to say that, but it’s a good thing for all of us to go away for a while. It’s one of the reasons we’re still here. Make sense? I never want to NOT be in this band. So, sometimes it’s good to just… put it back in the garage for a while… But, no gold watches or vacations just yet… I’ll be focusing all of my energy on finishing up my Sound City documentary film and album for worldwide release in the very near future. Photo by Ty Watkins In 1982, Brian Slagel started a record label that would turn into one of the premiere labels in the world of hard rock and metal. Celebrating 30 years in the industry with Metal Blade Records, Slagel decided to throw a party for the fans in New York City. Michigan heavy metalers Battlecross opened the night at Santos Party House, and As I Lay Dying closed things out. Being with Metal Blade for nearly a decade, it was no doubt an unbelievable honor for As I Lay Dying to help Slagel celebrate 30 years. Before the gig, Loudwire had the chance to catch up with Nick Hipa and Phil Sgrosso, both guitarists from the band, to chat about their new album, what it was like touring on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival and more. Leading up to the release of your latest album, ‘Awakened,’ you gave your fans a taste of what to expect with the tune ‘Cauterize.’ Do you think that is a good representation of the album as a whole? Nick Hipa: We’re all pretty confident that the fans are going to be into the album as a whole based on the response we got from ‘Cauterize.’ That’s just the tip of the iceberg as far as the whole album goes. If people can get into that, they’ll be stoked for what the rest of the album is. You recorded ‘Awakened’ in Fort Collins, Colo. I get the feeling this is a bit isolating as far as the metal community goes. NH: You know, the experience was awesome. It allowed us to be more productive than we’ve ever been. That mostly was a result of Phil and I being able to record all day, everyday for the majority of the day in our own rooms while the rest of the guys were recording in San Diego. That made it a lot more enjoyable. We weren’t as stressed out with timing and scheduling. The icing on the cake is that Fort Collins is just a really cool place. Phil Sgrosso: It definitely helped that we didn’t have any distractions, not worrying about family plans or something that would cause us to leave early. It was great to just focus on the record and get it done. Just a little over a month ago, you guys wrapped up the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. What was it like touring with bands like Slayer, Anthrax and Slipknot? PS: It was great. The mainstage was all the older bands and the classic metal bands. Slipknot , they’ve been around for 15 years or so, but they’re such a presence on the tour. It was nice playing with those bands and sharing the stage with them. There was a lot of energy with the festival. Everyone was pretty stoked about it. Any crazy stories from that tour? NH: Not so much crazy, but one of the things that sticks out to me is that a lot of the nights on tour there would be a tour-sponsored mixer where a band would be in charge of throwing a party. Usually there was a theme associated with it. Anthrax had a Halloween theme and everyone dressed up. Lemmy and the rest of the dudes from Motorhead showed up in costume, they were dressed up as the Blues Brothers. To me that was incredible because Lemmy is definitely an older guy and he’s been around for a really long time. It was great to see that someone like that hasn’t been jaded by the biz. He’s got a really good sense of himself and is really down to earth. He still has a good time. That was really awesome to me. It was like, “Oh, Lemmy’s here, and he’s in a costume!” What’s it mean to be a part of the Metal Blade family, playing their 30th anniversary show tonight? NH: We’re all proud to be on a label like Metal Blade. Metal Blade has been very reputable the whole time, it’s cool to be a part of it and be amongst the roster of bands that have excelled in their genres or done cool things in the world of heavy music. It’s been a pleasure working with them and being on the label for this long. PS: It’s kind of crazy to think that we’re playing our label’s 30th anniversary show. The owner, Brian Slagel, has seen it all happen. We’re definitely honored to be with them. You mentioned the world of heavy music. As I Lay Dying have been around for over a decade, and I would say you have ventured past the term ‘up-and-comers.’ That being said, in the last couple of years, there have definitely been some new bands that have really made a splash in the music scene. Have there been any acts that have caught your ear? NH: Even though we’re in a [Loudwire] Death Match with Gojira right now, they’re one of the heavier bands that are out there right now that are blowing us all away. They write such creative and crushingly heavy music, and we got to play with them a few months ago. They’re incredible live. They’re one of my favorite heavy bands right now. [Editor’s note: As I Lay Dying’s ‘A Greater Foundation’ was in battle with Gojira’s ‘The Axe’ at the time of the interview.] What’s next for As I Lay Dying? PS: We’ll be heading over to Europe for a month with Trivium. Then after that we’ll be on the Monster Outbreak Tour, a few Canadian dates and the rest will be in the states. So, basically two months of touring for the rest of the year. ? Theo Wargo, Getty Images It was a bittersweet moment Saturday night in New York’s Park as the Foo Fighters played an electrifying set at the Global Citizen Festival, but also made the announcement during the show that it will be their last performance for an indefinite period of time. Singer Dave Grohl told the audience, “We’re not making a big deal out of this, but this is it. We don’t have any more shows after this. This is it. We don’t have any ones after this. This is the show where we play as many songs as we can in a short period of time because honestly, I don’t know when we’re gonna do it again, but this is the perfect place to do it right now tonight.” The Foo Fighters did make the most of their set time, rocking through nine songs and keeping the energy high throughout. The performance opened with Grohl alone onstage with his guitar, relying on the audience for backup during the opening verses of ‘Times Like These’ before the rest of his band joined midway through to provide the frantic closing to the song. An impressive display of hard-rocking power followed, with ‘All My Life,’ ‘My Hero,’ and ‘Arlandria’ leading the way. The band did work in a few of their mid-tempo favorites like ‘Learn to Fly,’ ‘These Days,’ and ‘Walk’ before rounding out their performance with ‘Best of You’ and ‘Everlong.’ Grohl admitted being torn during the performance, stating, “I wish we could play all night … but I wanna see Neil Young .” He followed that with his announcement about it being the band’s final show for some time. For those worried about the future, it should be noted that Grohl made a similar statement to fans in the U.K. at the end of their overseas tour and then after commentary on the Internet hit a certain point buzzing that a hiatus was coming, Grohl posted his own response downplaying the hiatus talk . What this likely suggests is that the Foo Fighters have come to the end of their ‘Wasting Light’ touring cycle, and will take however much time is needed to re-energize before approaching their next disc. Grohl would later return to the stage, as he and the Black Keys ‘ Dan Auerbach would join headliners Neil Young for the all-star finale of ‘Rockin’ in the Free World.’ In addition to the two musicians, members of Foo Fighters, Band of Horses , and opening act K’Naan all grabbed every available microphone to provide backing vocals on the track. Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com In late August, Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix received discouraging news. After experiencing issues with his voice and consulting a doctor, he was advised to undergo surgery due to a node on his vocal cord. The impending surgery caused Papa Roach to drop off of the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival after only a week on the bill, an opportunity the band was hoping to use to showcase the new material from their upcoming disc, ‘The Connection,’ due out next week on Oct. 2. Well, good news: Shaddix tells Loudwire he is already on the path to a complete recovery after the surgery, and should be back on the stage in the very near future. Our phone conversation with Shaddix began with the Papa Roach singer serenading yours truly with his rendition of the classic Run-DMC tune ‘Mary, Mary,’ probably much to the chagrin of his doctor. When asked how his pipes were healing and how he was feeling, Shaddix was very positive about the whole experience. “Recovery is going really good,” Shaddix said. “It was a little tough in the beginning; I couldn’t talk at all so that sucked. It was the longest silence of my life since I was born; I just wanted to talk so bad.” As far as the physical healing, Shaddix said his last few appointments have been very encouraging. “Went to the first doctor’s appointment, all good,” explained Shaddix. “Went to another one yesterday and the doctor said I could start warming up. It was funny because they put a camera down my nose and down my throat to look down there and they couldn’t see which side they operated on because it had healed so well. They had to go back and look at the ‘before’ pictures, so that’s a god sign. It’s healing really well.” So what does the future hold for the singer? “I’m going to start warming up and I’ll be good to go here in the next two weeks. I’ll be full-voiced, buck wild, singing like a maniac,” Shaddix said. So in short, a true return to form. When we asked Shaddix if there would be any long-term effects to his singing voice, he responded, “I don’t think so. I’ll find out exactly how my voice sounds in the next few weeks. Anything is better than what it was, though, because it was f—ing terrible. I’m good.” Check back next week for the rest of our interview with Shaddix. Paul Hawthorne, Getty Images It has been five years since the last release from the legendary hardcore/punk band Bad Brains , but now they’re coming back with the new album ‘Into the Future,’ which will be released Nov. 20 via Megaforce Records. The title track is now available for streaming (click below to listen). Vocalist H.R. tells Rolling Stone the music connects the past to the future. “My vocalizing strengthens the impact of the group’s overall deliverance of the music, and the expression of the church of music. The new album wouldn’t be an A-plus new album if it hadn’t been for the earlier music, which was equally as inspirational. And it gets better and better.” Bad Brains produced ‘Into the Future’ themselves after their previous record ‘Build a Nation’ was produced by the late Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch of the Beastie Boys. The band included a remix of ‘Peace Be Unto Thee’ on this album as a tribute to Yauch, their longtime friend and fan. “‘Into The Future’ is the purest Bad Brains recording since the ‘ROIR’ cassette,” says bassist Darryl Jenifer. “This self-produced record shines with a true sense of freedom and musical experimentation, with blends of soulful backgrounds meshed with blistering hardcore and metal riffs, with classic dub.” A documentary about the band, ‘ Bad Brains: A Band in D.C. ‘ was released this year, and is being screened at various film festivals. It will be shown at the Woodstock Film Festival in New York on Oct. 12 and 13.
