Michael Lavine The Cult returned earlier this year with their latest disc ‘Choice of Weapon’ and now the rockers are offering up an insider’s look into the writing and recording process for the album with a new digital release titled ‘Weapon of Choice.’ ‘Weapon of Choice’ is designed to act as a prequel, offering fans an intimate and unique approach to their latest collection of songs from the beginning stages and throughout their development. Lead singer Ian Astbury weighed in on the new creative effort, explaining, “These songs were turned over and over, forged in long rehearsals and writing sessions and emanated from challenges both personal and professional.” Astbury also compared ‘Weapon of Choice’ to ‘Choice of Weapon,’ saying, “In many ways it’s a different album to the one we released and reveals the foundations of ‘Choice of Weapon.’ We were able to close the doors and begin to explore spaces we had not been in for a while.” ‘Weapon of Choice’ will only be available for a two month period on iTunes beginning on Oct. 16. Facebook: Three Days Grace ‘Transit of Venus,’ the fourth studio album from  Three Days Grace , is due out on Oct. 2, but fans can hear the entire album online now thanks to an advance stream on IGN.com. The debut single ‘Chalk Outline’ from the forthcoming disc, has been heating up radio and music charts alike. ‘Transit of Venus’ also includes a rendition of Michael Jackson’s ‘Give in To Me.’ In IGN.com ’s exclusive interview with drummer and backing vocalist Neil Sanderson, he talks about what Three Days Grace were going for with this new album. “This one is definitely a little tighter and more articulated. We wanted to take a different approach with this record, and we wanted to push the boundaries as far as our sound and what we’re singing about — dig a little bit deeper than a lot of the other rock bands that we’re hearing out there these days” says Sanderson. He goes on to say, “We thought outside the box a little bit and tried not to be as formulaic, experimenting with multiple layers … We wanted to have songs that felt more progressive … without alienating our original sound. We still sound like Three Days Grace, and we wanted to keep it real.” Three Days Grace will keep it real with a North American tour in support of ‘Transit of Venus,’ which starts in October. Green Day ‘¡Uno!’ – Album Review

Reprise Green Day  are a band who’ve reached the level where each new album is greeted with anticipation and scrutiny to see where they’ll take their music next. After taking a couple of years off and then returning with the announcement that a trilogy of albums was en route, there’s more focus than ever on what the band will provide listeners. The band’s latest, ‘¡Uno!,’ may deserve a second look once the whole trilogy arrives, but for now it stands on its own as a mixture of the punk goodness, attitude and heart that their early albums delivered combined with some nods to the straight ahead rock ‘n’ roll that they grew up on. The band dials back the political rhetoric to some extent on ‘¡Uno!,’ and puts the focus back on the angst and the joys of the heart, with tracks like ‘Stay the Night’ and the lead single ‘Oh Love’ offering variations on the theme that feel perfect for radio. ‘Fell for You’ is also a mid-album standout, speaking to the nervousness of first love, while ‘Sweet 16′ is an infectious gem. But for those not looking to get in touch with their feelings, there’s some great rock tracks on this album as well. ‘Let Yourself Go’ is destined to be a longtime concert favorite, with its blistering aggression, f-bomb filled lyrics, and the full punk scream of Billie Joe Armstrong begging for an audience sing-along to “ Gotta let it go / Gotta let it go .” And while we’re on the subject of sing-alongs, it won’t be long before crowds are joining Armstrong with “ We’re all crazy / You’re all crazy ” from ‘Loss of Control.’ Meanwhile, ‘Kill the DJ’ finds the band venturing into Franz Ferdinand -like beats; ‘Angel Blue’ has guitar work reminiscent of the Clash version of ‘I Fought the Law’; and ‘Troublemaker,’ with its chugging Tre Cool drums and clap-along vibe, seems a perfect fit for the live setting. There’s also a sense of familiarity on the album, as the leadoff track ‘Nuclear Family’ immediately lets you know from the opening drum beats and guitar riff that this is the band you have come to love. This piece of ear candy will be stuck in your head for months and fits perfectly alongside some of their greatest hits. Meanwhile, ‘Carpe Diem’ is ‘¡Uno!’s’ anthem, with Armstrong belting, “ Carpe diem, the battle cry / Are we all too young to die? / Ask a reason and no reply / Are we all too young to die? ” With more pointed lyrics like ‘ Making a living / Making a killing / What’s worth forgiving? ” the track is one of the strong statements on the record. All in all, it looks like the reflective ‘¡Uno!’ is the first step to a promising future from the ambitious trilogy project. We can’t wait to see how it fits with ‘¡Dos!’and ‘¡Tre!.’

Guns N’ Roses’ DJ Ashba Soundtracks Las Vegas Horror Experience, ‘Eli Roth’s Goretorium’

Eli Roth’s Goretorium Guns N’ Roses and Sixx: A.M. guitarist DJ Ashba recently used a bit of downtime to finish work on a new soundtrack for the Las Vegas horror attraction, ‘Eli Roth’s Goretorium.’ The disc, titled ‘Songs for the Demented Mind,’ will be available beginning this Thursday (Sept. 27). Roth, the director of such flicks as ‘Hostel’ and ‘Cabin Fever,’ created the new attraction that will serve as a year-round horror experience. Included are multi-level mazes, high tech Vegas showmanship, plenty of frightful scares and a vintage hotel setting that rivals that which you would see on a Hollywood set. In addition, there will be the ‘Baby Dolls’ lounge that overlooks City Center and the ‘Bloody Mary’s’ bar with gruesome cocktails for all to consume. Ashba used a backstory to develop the music for his soundtrack. The songs follow the journey of a couple that both come from broken homes where they suffered great tragedy and found a connection through their darkest desires. As the description reveals, “This bond helped lift them out of the hellish pit of addiction, psychological torment and released the demons of their past. As they set off on their honeymoon and they escape from the memories of a previous life, the drifters look to the open road in a stolen Chevy convertible leaving behind their broken dreams, seeking to replace them with the hope and promise of a new future in Sin City, Las Vegas.” Unfortunately the couple arrives at “The Delmont” hotel, where they learn they can’t escape the life of hell and are doomed to a gruesome fate. The guitarist completed a 19-track compilation to help tell the story, with songs like ‘Uneasy Greeting,’ ‘Hellevator,’ ’13th Floor,’ ‘Dancing With Demons,’ and ‘Nightmares Do Come True’ among the song titles foreshadowing what’s to come. The soundtrack is available both through DJ Ashba’s website and at the ‘Eli Roth Goretorium’ website .
