Kirk Hammett Dishes on Next Metallica Album, 3D Film and 2013 Orion Music Festival

Kevin Winter, Getty Images Kirk Hammett , lead shredder for Metallica , is a busy man. From writing and releasing his first book that chronicles his massive collection of horror movie memorabilia to filming a 3D movie with his bandmates, Hammett doesn’t seem like he’s slowing down anytime soon. We recently caught up with the axeman in New York City, where he made a stop on his book tour for ‘Too Much Horror Business.’ In addition to discussing the book , we also took some time to chat about Metallica’s next studio album, the longevity of the band and whether or not fans should be planning for a 2013 edition of their festival, Orion Music + More . Just a few months ago, you said that you have around 400 riffs ready for the new album. That’s grown from there. I have even more riffs now. So, as you continue piling on the riffs, where are you guys in the process of starting the next Metallica album? We just filmed a 3D movie up in Vancouver. That’s been at the forefront of our attention right now. We’ve been dealing with the audio aspect of that and pretty soon we’re going to start seeing footage from the concert. Once that particular project kind of dies down and we complete what we need to do with that, then we’re going to start writing songs. We’re going to meet up and start throwing ideas together. That should be really, really interesting. I’m really looking forward to that. What’s not going to be so fun is going through all the musical ideas that we have. I’m not really good at editing myself because I think it’s all good. To be more thorough on that, though, I foresee us starting to get together fairly soon, like in the next couple of months. We’ll start hammering away on it. When do you think fans will get to see the 3D film? We’re shooting for a summer release of next year. I’m really excited about it and I can’t wait to see it myself. The Rolling Stones just released a brand new studio track that comes on the heels of celebrating their 50th anniversary this past summer. With Metallica celebrating 30 years last year, do you think you’ll still be making new music two decades from now? I hope so! I have every intention. The word “retirement” doesn’t really sit well with me. There comes a time when you reach a position in society or culture where people will not let you retire. You can say, “Alright, I’m going to hang up my guitar,” but people will still not let you retire. They’ll constantly remind you of who you are and what you’ve done, so you might as well keep on doing it. It’s not like Metallica ever really slow down. That’s probably most evident in the fact you created your own music festival! Should fans get ready for a second Orion Music + More festival next year? The intention is to definitely do another one. We’re kind of getting our thoughts together on how that might be, where it might be and what our approach to it will be. We’re very, very keen on having another one this year. It was just so much fun. But as for details on the fest, you know, it’s too early in the process right now. I can assure you of one thing, there is going to be another ‘Kirk’s Crypt.’ Bigger and better, two stories this time! Metallica’s Kirk Hammett Discusses New Book ‘Too Much Horror Business,’ Scary Movies + More

Abrams Books On Sept. 25, 2012, iconic iconic  Metallica  axeman  Kirk Hammett , released his first book, ‘Too Much Horror Business,’ which chronicles his massive horror movie memorabilia collection. In it, fans get a sneak peek at all of the goodies Hammett has been collecting since he was a child, laid out by decade beginning with the 1920s. The book not only allows readers to gawk at gorgeous photos of movie posters, costumes, toys, props and other collectibles, but it also offers an in-depth dialogue between Hammett and Steffan Chirazi, editor of ‘So What!,’ the official magazine of the Metallica Club. Just minutes after finding out Metallica will be headlining New Orleans’ Voodoo Music + Arts Experience on Oct. 27, we had the chance to sit down with Hammett and chat about all things horror. In promoting your book, you’ve often talked about how you saw your first horror movie, ‘The Day of the Triffids,’ when you were 5 years old. It seems like horror movies speak to something inside all of us, even to the 5-year-old Kirk. Why do you think horror movies appeal to nearly everyone? They’re just fun. They’re a fun experience. It’s not unlike a roller coaster ride, you know? A good horror movie should have peaks and valleys, a good horror movie should move you emotionally, a good horror movie should be exciting to watch and energizing in a weird kind of way. Those are all sensations that everyone loves, or I would think everyone loves. Horror movies deliver that. I’ve always been attracted to the darker things in life. I was never one to go for light, airy stuff,  even as a child. My whole aesthetic has always been one of the darker side. That rings true also in my tastes in music. It’s just always something I’ve gravitated to naturally. You’ve also been sharing some insight on your favorite collectibles, including two outfits worn by Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. Moving from your own collection and looking just at the genre of horror, what are some of your favorite movies? That’s a hard one for me and I always give a different answer every time. I have a lot of favorites. Right off the bat, I love the original ‘Mummy’ movie from 1932. I love this movie from 1935 called ‘Mad Love.’ Jumping up into the ’70s, there was this low-budget movie called ‘Dracula vs. Frankenstein’ that I just love to death. To me, it’s just endless. I think about certain movies and I think, “Oh, that’s my favorite.” Then I think about others and I say, “No, that’s my favorite.” It’s so difficult for me. When we heard your the title of your book, we immediately thought, “Too much horror business? That’s a lyric from the Misfits!” Before you made the book, did you reach out to any members of the band about the title? I told Glenn [Danzig] that I was making this book when I saw him last December. He seemed alright with it. I think by now if he wasn’t alright with it I would’ve heard something. When I first heard that title, ‘Too Much Horror Business,’ I thought, “Wow, what a great title. If I ever do a book, that’s going to be the title.” And then, well, here we are. You could have made this a standard photo book, but there is a lengthy conversation between you and Steffan Chirazi featured throughout. Why did you decide to include the dialogue between the two of you? It was important for me to be able to interject some of my own personality into the book, to bring it to a different place. I didn’t want it to be a stock coffee table art book, I didn’t want it to be a reference book, I didn’t want it to look like an auction catalog, which a lot of art books end up looking like, at least to me. It was important to me to interject some of my own personality and some of my own humor and my own opinion on this stuff. How and why I’m into all this stuff. It was a way for me to make it more my book than just another coffee table book. ‘Too Much Horror Business’ is available for order from Abrams Books. And don’t worry, metalheads, we also talked to Kirk Hammett about all things Metallica. Kirk Hammett Talks Upcoming Metallica Album, Recalls Encounters With Kurt Cobain

Theo Wargo, Getty Images Metallica are busy with their 3D film right now, but guitarist Kirk Hammett says work on their follow-up to ‘Death Magnetic’ will ‘happen soon.’ The guitarist tells Rolling Stone , “Right now, we’re kind of preoccupied with dealing with this 3D movie that we shot up in Canada last month. So that’s kind of taking our time right now – that’s the priority, to deal with that. But once we’re done with that, we’re going to start hunkering down and putting riffs together. That’s all going to happen soon. I really don’t have an answer about Rick Rubin, although his name certainly comes up.” In the same interview, Hammett remembers his encounters with Nirvana  frontman  Kurt Cobain . The guitarist recalls, “He told me that [‘Whiplash’ was his favorite Metallica song]. He came to one of our shows in Seattle, on the ‘Black Album’ tour. I remember at one point, we were playing ‘Whiplash,’ and he looked at me and kept punching the air with his fist and gave me this big thumbs up sign.” Hammett says after seeing the reaction, they dedicated the track to Cobain. The guitarist says, “I knew Kurt kind of well and I hung out with him quite a bit. He was a pretty big Metallica fan – I was surprised at how much of a Metallica fan he was. He loved ‘Ride the Lightning.’ He loved that album.” While the 3D movie and eventual album work are the primary priorities for Hammett, he’s also managing to find some spare time to release his ‘ Too Much Horror Business ‘ book, detailing his extensive collection of horror memorabilia. The guitarist says, “Over the last five years or so, I started to get a few items that made my collection just that much better. I mean, really raised the overall quality of my collection. I thought, ‘I can’t be the solitary collector. It’s time for me to share it with the world.’ So this book is my gift to all the other monster kids and all the other horror nerds out there, who love this stuff as much as I do.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/metallica-kirk-hammett-too-much-horror-business-book-signing-appearances/” title=”Next: Kirk Hammett Book Signing Tour” align=”center”]
