Ronnie James Dio’s ‘Dream Evil’ Album to Receive Deluxe Edition Reissue

Universal The Ronnie James Dio album ‘Dream Evil’ is a must-own for any fan of the late legend. For those of you who don’t own a copy of the record, or if you’re just an avid Dio fanatic, ‘Dream Evil’ is set for a deluxe edition re-release, which will come out on March 4. Originally released on July 21, 1987, Dio’s fourth album, ‘Dream Evil,’ contains the classic tracks ‘All the Fools Sailed Away,’ ‘I Could Have Been a Dreamer’ and ‘Night People,’ the last of which Dio had been fooling around with since his days with Rainbow. ‘Dream Evil’ is also significant for being the last album Dio made with Kill Devil Hill / ex- Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice . The deluxe edition of ‘Dream Evil’ will contain not only the album in full, but an extra disc featuring 14 extra tracks, both in-studio and live. The majority of the second disc, however, showcases live performances of tracks such as ‘Holy Diver,’ ‘The Last in Line’ and ‘Rainbow in the Dark’ from Dio’s gig at the 1987 ‘Monsters of Rock’ festival at Castle Donington, England. The album will also include a special expanded booker with notes by British metal journalist Malcolm Dome, which has been endorsed by Dio’s widow, Wendy. Wendy Dio Says Early Detection Appears To Be Helping Tony Iommi’s Cancer Recovery

Gareth Cattermole, Getty Images (2) The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund recently had a chance to honor Dio’s longtime friend and bandmate, Tony Iommi , who himself has been battling lymphoma over the past year. Dio’s widow, Wendy, tells Loudwire that Iommi’s early detection has been key in his recovery, and it may have even been her husband’s death that led to the Black Sabbath guitarist getting checked out. Wendy tells us, “Well you know Tony was struggling with his own cancer, and hopefully … it’s in remission, which [would be] fantastic. And that’s early detection again, that was early. Maybe if Ronnie hadn’t passed away, [Iommi] wouldn’t have gotten checked early. We don’t know, but that was early detection, and [the ceremony] was great because he’s been through so much this year and to honor him, that was great. And for Geezer [Butler] to give him the award was very, very special. All of honorees are special.” Wendy stressed the importance of cancer education, especially for men who tend not to visit the doctor as frequently. She added, “We mainly deal with men’s cancers and we find that men don’t get checked. Women are very good. Men have to be drug there, but we’re trying to make awareness that early detection saves lives and for your loved ones to save their lives by getting checked.” The Halloween ‘Spooktacular’ event featured awards named after Dio songs, with Iommi taking home the ‘King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ award. In addition, the evening provided plenty of music, with a large portion provided by the Dio Disciples lineup of Tim “Ripper” Owens and Oni Logan, guitarist Craig Goldy, bassist Bjorn Englen, keyboardist Scott Warren, and drummer Simon Wright, with members of Buckcherry , Anthrax , Whitesnake, and White Lion sitting in as well. With the annual awards event behind them, the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout cancer fund is currently focused on a massive guitar auction with items donated by Metallica , Iron Maiden , the Foo Fighters , Bon Jovi , Eddie Van Halen , and many more. The event takes place Dec. 1 through Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif. For more info, check here . Stay tuned for a full interview with Wendy Dio and Geezer Butler’s wife, Gloria, about the guitar auction. Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Crazy Train’ Covered by Broadway Vet Rena Strober + Cellist Tina Guo

YouTube Ozzy Osbourne ‘s ‘Crazy Train’ has become one of the great songs in metal history and as such, it’s also been one of the most covered tracks in the genre. The latest artist to take a stab at the song is Broadway veteran Rena Strober, who along with acclaimed cellist Tina Guo, serve up a more clean-cut version of the classic song. Strober and Guo both make appearances in the new video, which has been dubbed ‘Crazy Train: The Wizard of Ozzy.’ While the wholesome look of Strober in the clip may not be exactly what some would expect to match the song’s lyrical content, the singer no less delivers the track with a full voice and a hint of “crazy” in her eyes and smile. Meanwhile, Guo is ferociously awesome on the standup electric bass and the fury at which she’s attacking the instrument is embellished a bit by the shaky camera movements. Strober has enjoyed a solid run on the stage, appearing the Broadway version of ‘Les Miserables,’ staging her one-woman show ‘Spaghetti & Matzo Balls,’ and touring the country in a production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’ She’s also released her own album called ‘Finding Home.’ Guo has managed to meld both classical playing and a rock/metal fusion into her cello style. She’s worked primarily creating music for motion pictures, video games and television scores. Most recently, Guo has been the featured soloist on the electric cello for Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ‘The Immortal’ World Tour. She was also featured as part of the Foo Fighters lineup for the Grammy Awards. As for Osbourne, he’s enjoyed a career as both a solo artist and member of Black Sabbath . He also was recently named President of Heavy Metal in a Loudwire election.
