Soundgarden Rock ‘Live on Letterman’ Gig at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater

SoundgardenWorld.com New Yorkers had the opportunity to see Soundgarden play at the very intimate Ed Sullivan Theater as part of the ‘Live on Letterman’ concert series. Soungarden are out in promotion of ‘King Animal,’ their first album in 16 years, and they kicked off the night with new tracks ‘Worse Dreams’ and ‘By Crooked Steps.’ Seven out of the 10 songs they played were off of ‘King Animal’ which gave fans a first listen at hearing the new tunes in a live setting. It took a while for the crowd to warm up, as many were hearing these songs for the first time, but the enthusiasm built pulled out some classics such as ‘Incessant Mace,’ ‘Beyond the Wheel’ and ‘Fell on Black Days.’ Soundgarden sounded flawless as Cornell’s vocal range took our ears to an entirely new level. The serious shredding skills of guitarist Kim Thayil is mind blowing when you see him perform live, and the booming bass of Ben Shepherd and steady beats from drummer Matt Cameron topped it all off. During the performance Cornell, joked that that David Letterman was managing them now. Earlier in the evening, while they were taping their appearance on CBS ‘Late Show,’ host David Letterman told the band after their performance that he’d like to manage the band. Cornell went on to quip that the band is not doing any more small gigs, only Madison Square Garden from now on. That joke didn’t last long, since right after ‘Live on Letterman,’ Cornell did in fact play a “small gig,” for a big cause. Cornell performed a solo set which was a benefit show for Hurricane Sandy victims at Bowery Ballroom. In a surprise, he was joined by his Soundgarden bandmates during that gig. Soundgarden’s takeover of New York City continues tonight (Nov. 13) with a gig at Irving Plaza. Check Out Soundgarden’s ‘Live On Letterman’ Set ‘Live On Letterman’ Set list: 1. Worse Dreams 2. Pearl Jam Launch ‘Instant Classic’ Bootleg Series With Missoula Show

PearlJam.com Pearl Jam are one of the leaders when it comes to providing their fans with bootleg performances of their shows, but they intend on making the turnaround a little quicker and offering some special deals in the future. As such, they’ve launched what they’re calling the “Instant Classic” bootleg series. In late September, the group played one of their few shows this year in Missoula, Mont. as a show of support for Montana Senator Jon Tester’s re-election campaign. The Adams Center performance was the first time in seven years the group had played in Missoula, and it turned out to be such a high energy show that the band declared it “an instant classic.” As a result, they put a rush on making the performance available to their fans for a limited time at a special price. The period is currently underway and continues through Tuesday (Nov. 13) with fans being able to purchase the bootleg in MP3 format for $4.99. Most bootlegs retail for $9.99 at the group’s website . During this sale period, proceeds will be donated to the Poverello Center in Missoula. After Nov. 13, all formats (MP3, FLAC, FLAC-HD, and CD) of the show performance will be available at regular prices. Visit www.pearljam.com/goods to place your order. Pearl Jam are in the process of working on new music, though bassist Jeff Ament recently admitted that they are taking it at their own pace and that he doesn’t expect they’ll continue work on the disc until sometime early next year. He added that even though there are seven or eight songs recorded, “It’s still sort of a blank slate and that’s exciting.” No timetable has been set for delivery of the next album. One Fan Dies and Several Injured at Linkin Park’s South Africa Show After Scaffolding Collapse

Photo: James Minchin Tragedy struck at the stadium where Linkin Park performed in Cape Town, South Africa, tonight (Nov. 7). One female fan died and about 20 others were injured when an advertising structure collapsed prior to the concert due to high winds. Apparently, the wind gusts caused a temporary scaffolding structure to collapse onto fans who were on their way into the concert, but the show went on as scheduled. Linkin Park learned of the tragedy shortly after the concert ended. The band was performing in South Africa as part of their International Linkin Park Underground Summit in which they interact with fans. Following the show, Linkin Park posted a message on their official website expressing their condolences to the family of the deceased fan and their concern for those injured: Following our performance tonight at Cape Town Stadium, we were advised that several people were injured as a result of the collapse of an advertising tower erected by Lucozade in the parking area outside the venue. We wish to express our deep sadness and concern for those injured and our heartfelt condolences to the family of the fan who died as a result of her injuries. Though we have had no relationship with the sponsor or the entity responsible for erecting the structure, we take the safety of our fans very seriously and our thoughts are with all of those who were affected by this tragedy. Prior to the news of the concertgoer’s death, Cape Town authorities released the following statement: “Twenty concert attendees were injured at the Cape Town Stadium this evening when a temporary scaffolding structure in the stadium precinct collapsed due to high winds. The injured were treated on scene and have been taken to nearby hospitals for further medical attention.” Raw video footage of the aftermath of the scaffolding collapse has been released below. The tragedy follows similar deadly incidents involving Radiohead and the country band Sugarland. Raw Footage of Scaffolding Collapse at Linkin Park Show

Serj Tankian Showcases ‘Orca’ Symphony Project in Austria

Hannah Johnston, Getty Images Serj Tankian got a chance to see his symphonic vision come to fruition Sunday (Oct. 28) when he joined the Das Karussell Orchestra in Austria to perform his ‘Orca’ classical symphony. Tankian launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the event and the recording of a filmed show for a 2013 release. The end result was a rousing success, as Tankian and the orchestra were loudly cheered following the performance. The singer stated before the show, “‘Orca’ is the first four-act symphony that I have composed, a mix of early-20th-century compositional styles combined with the powerful range of film scoring. I decided to name my symphony ‘Orca’ because orcas ‘appear to have no parallel outside humans’ in terms of their cultural faculties. An orca is really a dolphin with much darker tendencies. I see this dichotomy as a great metaphor for humanity.” Tankian initially sought a $25,000 goal to fund the entire project, and added that any additional funds would be used to cover the expenses of mixing, mastering, and promotion. Guns N’ Roses Rock Acoustically for 2012 Bridge School Benefit

Theo Wargo, Getty Images The fun part of Neil Young ‘s annual Bridge School benefit is seeing acts who normally rock out attempt to pull off a fully acoustic performance, and that’s what fans got Saturday night when Guns N’ Roses unplugged for a rare stripped-down set for those on hand. Young’s annual event, which raises funds to aid in the education of severely handicapped children, returned to its yearly home in Mountain View, Calif. for the first of two nights. It was there where Jack White , Flaming Lips and others performed acoustic sets, but the real curiosity of the evening would be how Guns N’ Roses would handle it. How rare was the performance? Recently, guitarist DJ Ashba revealed , “A lot of the acoustic shows in the past, I would still play on the [electric] Les Paul — but for this, we’re going all acoustic, no electric anything. That’s how Neil [Young] envisioned the whole thing, so we’re gonna stay true to that, for sure.” The group worked up a seven-song set that surprisingly included such harder-edged tracks as ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ and ‘Paradise City.’ Other highlights from the performance included the rather funky opening number ‘You’re Crazy,’ the “sentimental” favorite ‘Used to Love Her’ and a really cool stripped down version of ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine.’ The band not only seemed to be having fun with the challenge, but also took in their surroundings as various members wandered to the side of the stage to play specifically to the students the show was benefitting. A number of videos from the performance have turned up online and can be seen below. Proceeds from the night will aid the Bridge School’s continued efforts in advancing the educational pursuits of severely handicapped children. Red Hot Chili Peppers Rock Out at Flea’s Birthday Bash Fundraiser in His Backyard

Michael Loccisano, Getty Images Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea made sure that his 50th birthday would be one that he and all of his guests would remember as he opened up his backyard for a concert-fundraiser to benefit his Silver Lake Conservatory music school. Flea told Rolling Stone prior to the performance, “For this to happen on my 50th birthday is the best gift I could ever hope to receive.” Flea joined his Red Hot Chili Peppers bandmates for a set that headlined the night, while he called upon his old friends in Rancid to serve as the opening act. The selection of Rancid to play the backyard fundraiser was no coincidence, as singer singer-guitarist Tim Armstrong has a history with the Silver Lake Conservatory. Flea explained, “Tim studied there. He took lessons there – he was taking flamenco or something. Tim’s cool and those guys showed up. They played for us before, paid for everything, gave us all the merch, everything. Those guys are so generous – they’re like walking the walk, dude.” Ben Harper also made a surprise appearance during the evening, altering his cover of ‘Hallelujah’ to ‘Happy Birthday’ while a giant birthday cake in the form of a stand-up bass was presented to Flea. The bassist was overwhelmed not only from the birthday wishes, but for the support shown his school. He explained, “A big part of my life is music education because it changed my life — but arts, academics and athletics should all be equally treated in schools. There are different kinds of kids and those three things are vital towards the next generation of kids coming up to be happy, productive good citizens.” Finishing out the evening, Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage for a nine-song set that began with ‘Can’t Stop’ and wrapped up with ‘By the Way.’ A cover of Neil Young ‘s ‘Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere’ also found its way into the performance. The bassist stated before the final track, “It’s been kind of an overwhelming experience for me. It feels really meaningful and poignant to have everybody come out and support.” Red Hot Chili Peppers Flea’s 50th Birthday Bash Setlist: ‘Can’t Stop’ ‘Snow (Hey Oh)’ ‘Monarchy of Roses’ ‘Soul to Squeeze’ ‘The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie’ ‘Right on Time’ ‘Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere’ ‘Give It Away’ ‘By the Way’ [button href=”http://loudwire.com/10-best-red-hot-chili-peppers-songs/” title=”Next: Top 10 Red Hot Chili Peppers Songs” align=”center”]

Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell Joins Sammy Hagar for ‘Man in the Box’ at Birthday Bash

Kevin Winter / Frazer Harrison, Getty Images Sammy Hagar knows how to throw a bash, and it helps when you make sure that Alice in Chains singer-guitarist Jerry Cantrell is on the guest list. Cantrell made a guest appearance at Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina (Oct. 13) to take part in Hagar’s 65th birthday celebration. As it was Hagar’s special night, he was able to invite Cantrell onstage and jam through the Alice in Chains’ classic ‘Man in the Box.’ Also joining in the fun on the song was Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum , who kept the beat chugging along. While Hagar may not quite reach the vocal power of the late  Layne Staley during the performance (quite honestly, who can?), Cantrell appears to be on par with a blistering guitar solo and some swampy licks. The track met with rousing approval from the crowd and Hagar went in for the embrace with Cantrell after the song was complete. Cantrell has been quiet musically for most of the year. He was honored at the MusiCares MAP Fund benefit back in May and recently turned up to induct Heart into the Hollywood Walk of Fame last month. However, after a break to have shoulder surgery following last album’s tour cycle, Cantrell has been working with Alice in Chains again on a new album .
