Soundgarden Rock ‘Live on Letterman’ Gig at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater

SoundgardenWorld.com New Yorkers had the opportunity to see Soundgarden play at the very intimate Ed Sullivan Theater as part of the ‘Live on Letterman’ concert series. Soungarden are out in promotion of ‘King Animal,’ their first album in 16 years, and they kicked off the night with new tracks ‘Worse Dreams’ and ‘By Crooked Steps.’ Seven out of the 10 songs they played were off of ‘King Animal’ which gave fans a first listen at hearing the new tunes in a live setting. It took a while for the crowd to warm up, as many were hearing these songs for the first time, but the enthusiasm built pulled out some classics such as ‘Incessant Mace,’ ‘Beyond the Wheel’ and ‘Fell on Black Days.’ Soundgarden sounded flawless as Cornell’s vocal range took our ears to an entirely new level. The serious shredding skills of guitarist Kim Thayil is mind blowing when you see him perform live, and the booming bass of Ben Shepherd and steady beats from drummer Matt Cameron topped it all off. During the performance Cornell, joked that that David Letterman was managing them now. Earlier in the evening, while they were taping their appearance on CBS ‘Late Show,’ host David Letterman told the band after their performance that he’d like to manage the band. Cornell went on to quip that the band is not doing any more small gigs, only Madison Square Garden from now on. That joke didn’t last long, since right after ‘Live on Letterman,’ Cornell did in fact play a “small gig,” for a big cause. Cornell performed a solo set which was a benefit show for Hurricane Sandy victims at Bowery Ballroom. In a surprise, he was joined by his Soundgarden bandmates during that gig. Soundgarden’s takeover of New York City continues tonight (Nov. 13) with a gig at Irving Plaza. Check Out Soundgarden’s ‘Live On Letterman’ Set ‘Live On Letterman’ Set list: 1. Worse Dreams 2. Soundgarden’s ‘King Animal’ Best Buy Edition Bolstered With Bonus Tracks

Facebook: Soundgarden Fans have been anxiously awaiting a new album from  Soundgarden for more than 15 years, and the Nov. 13 arrival of ‘King Animal’ is just a couple weeks away. A deluxe edition of the release will also be available at Best Buy that includes extra tracks. In addition to the 13 songs on ‘King Animal,’ demo versions of the songs ‘Black Saturday,’ ‘Bones of Birds,’ ‘By Crooked Steps,’ ‘A Thousand Days Before’ and ‘Worse Dreams’ will also be included.  Finished versions of all five songs also appear on the album. ‘Been Away Too Long’ is the first single from ‘King Animal.’ Frontman Chris Cornell describes the song as “a look back at history in sort of a strange atmospheric way.” Cornell called the song’s lyrical narrative a way of saying, “We’ve been gone for 15 years and now we’re back. It’s about time, and we still have something to say about rock music that no one else is saying — and I feel confident about saying that.” So why did the band split up back in 1997? Cornell says , “We broke up because we were bored of the periphery, all of the things that are outside of the band playing music and writing songs, playing shows – that part got really boring.” Bassist Ben Shepherd adds, “The part that is outside of writing songs and playing shows. So it wasn’t the Soundgarden thing, it was the outside of Soundgarden.” Soundgarden will play the British TV show ‘Later With Jools Holland’ on Nov. 6. According to Grunge Report , they’ve also just booked a ‘Live on Letterman’ mini concert following their Nov. 12 appearance on the ‘Late Show With David Letterman,’  and they have two European concerts scheduled on Nov. 7 (Dortmond, Germany) and Nov. 9 (London, England). Foo Fighters Deliver Classic Rock Favorites for Music Midtown Set

Frederick M. Brown / Justin Sullivan, Getty Images The Foo Fighters freshened things up by digging into the past with several classic rock covers Friday night (Sept. 21) during their headlining set at Atlanta’s Music Midtown festival. The event also gave them the opportunity to reprise their frequent cover of ‘Bad Reputation’ with the song’s originator, Joan Jett , who had played earlier in the day. The fans were treated to a healthy dose of the band’s ‘Wasting Light’ album early on, with ‘White Limo,’ ‘Rope,’ ‘Arlandria,’ ‘These Days,’ and ‘Walk’ among the first nine tracks of the night. But after that and such well placed hits as ‘All My Life,’ ‘The Pretender,’ ‘My Hero,’ and ‘Learn to Fly,’ the band mixed things up with their first cover of the night – Van Halen ‘s ‘Everybody Wants You.’ The blistering guitar work and audience reaction made this one of the highlights of the evening, as the Foo Fighters showed that even on someone’s else’s material, they’re a band on top of their game. Next up in the covers catalog was the group’s take on Pink Floyd ‘s ‘In the Flesh?’ The track has been a favorite cover over the past year or so with Taylor Hawkins leading the vocals rather than Dave Grohl . The last two covers of the night also leaned to the classic rock side, with Dave Grohl leading the band through the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers classic ‘Breakdown’ first. With its moody beat, the Petty classic allowed the Foo Fighters a bit of a breather from their adrenaline fueled set. However, the mid-tempo break was quickly alleviated when Grohl and company introduced Jett. The singer, who has appeared several times with the Foo Fighters during the support of their latest album and even joined the band on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman,’ reprised the collaboration of ‘Bad Reputation’ for the Atlanta audience. With that performance bringing the audience to their feet, the Foo Fighters finished out the night with their longtime show closer, ‘Everlong.” Watch Foo Fighters Cover Van Halen’s ‘Everybody Wants Some’ Watch Foo Fighters and Joan Jett Perform ‘Bad Reputation’ [button href=”http://loudwire.com/foo-fighters-frontman-dave-grohl-downplays-reports-of-band-hiatus/” title=”Next: Foo Fighters Downplay Hiatus Talk” align=”center”]
