Kent Abbott, Guitarist for the Bands Grade and Somehow Hollow, Dies at 32

Kent Abbott, guitarist for the bands Grade and Somehow Hollow, has died at the age of 32. Although no cause of death has been reported, we can confirm that Abbott passed away on Jan. 7. In the worlds of underground hardcore and modern punk, Abbott was an admired and respected guitarist, playing along with two truly solid bands. Canadian hardcore band Grade lasted for nearly a decade, releasing five full-length albums, three of which were put out by Victory Records. Abbott joined the band toward the end of their run, before the group split up in 2002. Grade posted a set of tweets paying tribute to their fone-time guitarist: Shocked and saddened to hear that friend and Grade/Somehow Hollow guitarist Kent Abbott passed away. All our thoughts are with his family. — Grade (@GradeHC) January 9, 2013 We will miss your energy, laughter and kind spirit. RIP Kent Abbott. Truly one of a kind. — Grade (@GradeHC) January 10, 2013 Kent Abbott also founded the band Somehow Hollow in 2000, creating Canada’s answer to up-tempo SoCal pop-punk. The band only released one full-length album, ‘Busted Wings and Rusted Halos,’ in 2003, capturing a definitive early ’00s pop-punk sound. “Kent had a passion for music and had played at venues around the world,” reads an  obituary  for Abbott. “He acquired a super sense of humour, was always attracted to people and would make them laugh.” In memory of Kent Abbott and his dedication to music, check out his work with both Grade and Somehow Hollow in the videos below. Jerry Cantrell Performs With Duff McKagan’s Walking Papers, Discusses Alice in Chains Album

Michael Loccisano, Getty Images After spending a good portion of the year in the studio recording the upcoming  Alice in Chains  album, singer-guitarist Jerry Cantrell is in the mood to get out and play. Cantrell was a surprise guest of the Walking Papers during their performance at the Crocodile Café in Seattle Saturday night (Dec. 15). Seattle station KISW 99.9 FM reports that Cantrell joined the band, which features Duff McKagan , the Missionary Position’s Jeff Angell and Ben Anderson, and former Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin, for two songs during their performance. Cantrell rocked guitar on ‘Your Secret Is Safe With Me’ (which can be seen below) and ‘Two Tickets.’ Walking Papers released their debut disc back in October. It features a guest appearance from another Seattle favorite — Pearl Jam ‘s Mike McCready — lending some guitar assistance. As for the upcoming Alice in Chains disc, Cantrell told Revolver (excerpted by Grunge Report ) that the as-yet-untitled album stays true to form. He explained, “I don’t think you’ll be surprised by anything you hear. It’s us. It’s also really unique. It’s got all the elements of any record we’ve put out, but it’s unlike any record we’ve put out. Basically, it’s the next chapter in the Alice in Chains book, and it’s going to be a big one.” Though a release date and title have yet to be announced for the new Alice in Chains record, the new song ‘ Hollow ‘ just arrived, complete with a fan-generated lyric video. Guns N’ Roses Joined Onstage by Izzy Stradlin During Final Two Las Vegas Residency Shows

Jason Merritt / Scott Harrison, Getty Images Guns N’ Roses just completed their ‘Appetite for Democracy’ residency in Las Vegas on Nov. 24, and fans who attended the final two shows were gifted with an pleasant surprise. Former GN’R guitarist Izzy Stradlin joined the band onstage for a number of songs throughout the band’s sets, including ’14 Years,’ ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,’ Used to Love Her’ and ‘Paradise City.’ It’s difficult to gauge the relationship between Stradlin and GN’R singer Axl Rose is in modern times, but there seems to be a mutual admiration for one another. In May 2006, Stradlin joined GN’R onstage in New York City for the first time in 13 years, and earlier this year, Stradlin performed with Guns at London’s O2 Arena. It should be noted that both Rose and Stradlin skipping Guns N’ Roses’ 2012 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Known to be somewhat of a recluse in his personal life, Stradlin thrilled die-hard GN’R fans during the Nov. 23 and Nov. 24 Vegas dates, playing six tracks during one show and five the following day. Check out video footage of ’14 Years’ below. Stradlin has released 11 studio albums since 1992, with his most recent musical contribution being the new single ‘ Baby-Rann .’ Could Stradlin’s increasingly frequent GN’R live cameos lead to something monumental in the future? We’ll be watching for it, so stay tuned as more Guns N’ Roses news continues to break. Mastodon’s Troy Sanders Joins Max Cavalera in New Supergroup

Michael Buckner / Carlos Muina, Getty Images Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera has spoken in the past about an upcoming musical project with Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Greg Puciato and former Mars Volta drummer Dave Elitch, but a new member has been added to the yet-unnamed supergroup. That man just happens to be Troy Sanders , the bassist and co-vocalist of modern metal outfit  Mastodon . During an interview with Singapore metal radio show ‘Vicious Volume,’ Max Cavalera announced the inclusion of Sanders in the upcoming experiment. “Troy from Mastodon just joined the band, too, so now we’ve got three singers for the project, which is also really killer,” says Cavalera. “I’m really excited about that, too. I think it’s gonna be a very original project. I don’t know any other metal projects out there with three people singing like this. So it can be almost like a Transplants of metal. Transplants had three singers; this also has three singers, and it can be very, very great.” He continues, “I’m following, in a lot of ways, some of the same footsteps as Nailbomb in my approach to this project — a lot of do-it-yourself, punk-rock kind of feeling to the project. So the songs are written really quick — I don’t think too much about it. I like it more like that, so they are very raw. We are working on the [music] in December and then we’re hoping to get in the studio in January. The main thing we don’t have is a name.” Mastodon are currently cruising through South America and Mexico for a small amount of dates, and none of the other acts with members in the upcoming project are currently on tour, so it seems like the new project will being to grow right on schedule. Foo Fighters Deliver Classic Rock Favorites for Music Midtown Set

Frederick M. Brown / Justin Sullivan, Getty Images The Foo Fighters freshened things up by digging into the past with several classic rock covers Friday night (Sept. 21) during their headlining set at Atlanta’s Music Midtown festival. The event also gave them the opportunity to reprise their frequent cover of ‘Bad Reputation’ with the song’s originator, Joan Jett , who had played earlier in the day. The fans were treated to a healthy dose of the band’s ‘Wasting Light’ album early on, with ‘White Limo,’ ‘Rope,’ ‘Arlandria,’ ‘These Days,’ and ‘Walk’ among the first nine tracks of the night. But after that and such well placed hits as ‘All My Life,’ ‘The Pretender,’ ‘My Hero,’ and ‘Learn to Fly,’ the band mixed things up with their first cover of the night – Van Halen ‘s ‘Everybody Wants You.’ The blistering guitar work and audience reaction made this one of the highlights of the evening, as the Foo Fighters showed that even on someone’s else’s material, they’re a band on top of their game. Next up in the covers catalog was the group’s take on Pink Floyd ‘s ‘In the Flesh?’ The track has been a favorite cover over the past year or so with Taylor Hawkins leading the vocals rather than Dave Grohl . The last two covers of the night also leaned to the classic rock side, with Dave Grohl leading the band through the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers classic ‘Breakdown’ first. With its moody beat, the Petty classic allowed the Foo Fighters a bit of a breather from their adrenaline fueled set. However, the mid-tempo break was quickly alleviated when Grohl and company introduced Jett. The singer, who has appeared several times with the Foo Fighters during the support of their latest album and even joined the band on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman,’ reprised the collaboration of ‘Bad Reputation’ for the Atlanta audience. With that performance bringing the audience to their feet, the Foo Fighters finished out the night with their longtime show closer, ‘Everlong.” Watch Foo Fighters Cover Van Halen’s ‘Everybody Wants Some’ Watch Foo Fighters and Joan Jett Perform ‘Bad Reputation’ [button href=”http://loudwire.com/foo-fighters-frontman-dave-grohl-downplays-reports-of-band-hiatus/” title=”Next: Foo Fighters Downplay Hiatus Talk” align=”center”]
