Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi + Queen’s Brian May Plan to Collaborate on Guitar Riffs Album

Paul Kane / Daniele Venturelli, Getty Images Two masters of the guitar are apparently making plans to create a “riffs” album. Black Sabbath ‘s Tony Iommi and Queen’s Brian May are expected to begin this riffs record soon, which will allow fans to build their own songs using the recordings. What if you had the men who wrote ‘Iron Man’ or ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in your very own musical project? You’d be a made man! The riff masters are bonafide legends, and will break new ground once again with this new idea. The Iommi / May project was meant to be kept a secret for a while longer, but Iommi accidentally broke the news earlier than expected. “When are we going to get to work on that album of riffs together?,” Iommi asked May in the Kerrang! interview. “You know what I’m talking about.” May replies, “Yes, I do know what he’s talking about, and I’m very, very keen. The record he’s talking about what supposed to be a secret, but I guess he’s blown it now.” [via NME ] May came up with the idea for the record after visiting Iommi’s studio, noticing the massive amount of unreleased material the Sabbath guitarist has conjured over the years. “I thought it would be great to make a compilation out of them,” May says about the demos. “The idea was to put all these riffs out in some form so that people could build their own songs from them. You could make your own music with Tony Iommi on guitar!” There’s no word on when fans can expect the album to be recorded or released, but Black Sabbath followers will be gifted with the new album, ’13,’ in June. David Draiman’s Device Unveil Teaser Video for Self-Titled Debut Album

Facebook – Device As the anticipation builds for the April 9 release of their self-titled debut album, Device have released a short, 45 second black and white teaser video featuring a snippet of their music (watch below). The first single ‘Vilify’ hits radio on Feb. 19. The trio formed by David Draiman from Disturbed  has recruited a star-studded lineup of guest musicians for ‘Device.’ Among those making appearances are Black Sabbath  bassist  Geezer Butler , Deep Purple  singer-bassist  Glenn Hughes , Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows , System of a Down  singer  Serj Tankian , Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Halestorm ‘s Lzzy Hale . The band’s touring lineup consists of Draiman,  Evanescence  drummer Will Hunt and Dope / Eve to Adam guitarist Virus. Former Filter guitarist Geno Lenardo wrote and recorded the album with Draiman, but will not tour with the outfit. Draiman recently discussed how happy he was with Hale’s appearance. “For years I’d wanted to re-do ‘Close My Eyes Forever’ by Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne. I always thought it was a fantastic idea and needed the right combination of elements and events and needed to have the right woman to play the role of Lita in this song, and Lzzy Hale, in my opinion, is the strongest, most distinctive voice, female voice, in rock today. I think that she’s just as good as it gets.” Device have some concert dates scheduled in support of their debut album. They’ll play in Switzerland later this month, and then have several festival dates lined up for the spring and summer. You’ll be able to see them at Rock on the Range, Carolina Rebellion, Welcome To Rockville Festival, Lazerfest 2013 and elsewhere. Black Sabbath Finish Recording Album, Plot Tour + Offer Tony Iommi Health Update

Tim Whitby, Getty Images It’s official! Black Sabbath have completed recording their upcoming album , ’13.’ Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler announced the exciting news to Eddie Trunk  in a video interview (seen below) at the NAMM convention, in addition to offering an update on guitarist Tony Iommi ‘s current battle with cancer. In the interview, Butler spoke all about all things Black Sabbath. “We’ve finished recording it,” reveals the bassist of the album. “Tony’s back in England putting down a couple of solos. Then we start mixing it in Febraury and it will be out in June. The provisional title is ’13? — unless we can come up with something more constructive. I’ve written most of the lyrics. Ozzy comes up with the titles and then gives me an inspiration to write the lyrics. I think we’ve got 16 songs and I’ve written 14 sets of lyrics.” Butler also updated fans on Black Sabbath’s touring plans. And guess what folks? They’re going all over the world! “We start at the end of April in New Zealand, then we go to Australia, then Japan,” begins the bassist. “June, we’ll be promoting the album, then July and August [is] USA. Then October is South America and Europe in November and December.” Black Sabbath were planning on touring extensively in 2012, but the lymphoma diagnosis of legendary riff master Tony Iommi stalled the heavy metal band’s plans. However, Butler has good news to spread about Iommi’s health. “[Tony]‘s doing well; he’s really responding well,” Butler assures. “He has to go and have his medication every six weeks. But yeah, he’s really coming along well; he’s really doing well.” As for who will be drumming with the band, that is still not determined. After original drummer Bill Ward left the outfit over contract disputes, Tommy Clufetos filled in for the few shows that Sabbath played last year. However, Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk plays on the actual album. “We’re not sure yet; we don’t know. ‘Cause I think Brad’s got commitments with Rage Against the Machine. So it’ll probably be either Tommy or Brad, depending on their commitments.” So does that mean Rage Against the Machine might be touring in 2013, too? Fingers crossed! But getting back to Sabbath, if everything goes to plan, 2013 should be an incredible year! Black Sabbath’s Geezer Butler Offers New Details on Upcoming Album + Tour Plans

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com The new year is bringing a new Black Sabbath album, their first original disc with Ozzy Osbourne since 1978′s ‘Never Say Die!’ Though the group was unable to work out their contract dispute with drummer Bill Ward , they’re forging ahead with the new music and their first extended touring since regrouping. Bassist Geezer Butler addressed the upcoming disc as well as the band’s drummer situation in a video interview with 96.7 KCAL Rocks . According to Butler, the ‘ 13 ‘ disc has a familiar feel. He explains, “It’s sort of got the feel of the first three albums — back to the basic rawness. And the lyrics are very … they’re just about life … life and death and doom and everything else. You get Prozac with every album.” The bassist revealed that even though the members are very familiar with each other, this was a different recording process as all of the members were completely sober. “It’s been more professional in that way,” says Butler. “We’ve stuck to a schedule every day. We’d go in at one o’clock and finish at six, just to keep everything fresh. Five hours a day — that’s it.” As for the decision to invite Rage Against the Machine ‘s Brad Wilk to play drums on the effort, Butler credits that call to producer Rick Rubin. “He didn’t want a typical heavy metal drummer on the album,” says Butler. “It’s not really a heavy metal album. It’s more of a rock … heavy rock. And Rick Rubin suggested Brad cause he’s more in the vein of Bill Ward. So we jammed with him and he sounded great with the stuff, so we went with that … It’s sort of back to the way we used to be in the ’70s. That’s his feel — sort of a jazzy, bluesy feel to him, and that’s the way the music is now. It was great working with him.” Though the band employed Wilk in the studio and Tommy Clufetos when touring last year, Butler revealed that they hadn’t decided on a touring drummer for this year’s dates. Black Sabbath’s ’13′ album is expected in June. For more on Butler’s discussion on the current health updates of Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi , watch the video interview below.
