Godsmack’s Sully Erna Revisits Poker Passion

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Godsmack ‘s planned year-long break in the schedule is not only giving frontman Sully Erna a chance to pursue his solo career, but he’s also taking the time to revive one of his other passions — poker. The musician tells ESPN that after stepping away from the card game for a few years, he’s gotten the itch to compete in poker tournaments again. In 2006 and 2007, Erna took part in the World Series of Poker competitions, winning $17,730 his first year and banking another $45,422 the following year. Then he took home $307,325 in the 2007 Five-Diamond World Poker Classic. But Erna says that his mindset wasn’t right to keep it up. He explains, “I was finding that I was very impatient and playing crappy hands. I was losing patience every time I was playing. I had to take a break. [But] I’m making a comeback! I’ve studied the game. I’m getting the itch to play poker again. In fact, I’m in Los Angeles today and I’ll be playing tonight. I need to shake the rust off. I’m ready to go deep and win a lot of money!” Erna says he felt the timing was right to pick up poker again. “I’ve been bouncing around testing out my game,” says the vocalist. “That’s why many of my venues for the solo shows are in casinos. I love that environment. It works to my advantage, also it’s a transient audience. I can’t wait.” Sully has booked a solo tour later this spring, promoting both his ‘Avalon’ solo disc and the works of Godsmack. Check out the tour dates here . Deftones’ Chino Moreno + Former Isis Members Complete First Palms Album

Ipecac Recordings Deftones frontman Chino Moreno is a man of many projects and his latest finds him recording with several former members of the band Isis in a new group called Palms . The band has confirmed the completion of their self-titled debut album and the disc is now due June 25 through Ipecac Recordings. Moreno is joined by the band by Jeff Caxide, Aaron Harris and Bryant Clifford Meyer. They’ve been working on new music during breaks in Moreno’s schedule over the past year, with Harris handling mixing duties and all of the band members serving as producers. The Deftones frontman stated last fall about the project, “They recorded this music a long time ago, almost a year ago, so musically it’s been its own thing and I only got asked to do vocals on it not too long ago by my buddy Aaron [Harris], he’s the drummer. It’s not really a thing I rush on. Any of the projects I do, I don’t have to do them. I do them strictly because it’s fun to make music with friends and to do that.” Moreno recently took to his Mixlr account, where he played an early, unmastered version of the band’s song ‘Tropics,’ which will be part of the upcoming disc. The group recently launched an official website , but at present only a splash page with a photo and links to their social network accounts is all that is part of it. David Draiman’s Device Unveil Teaser Video for Self-Titled Debut Album

Facebook – Device As the anticipation builds for the April 9 release of their self-titled debut album, Device have released a short, 45 second black and white teaser video featuring a snippet of their music (watch below). The first single ‘Vilify’ hits radio on Feb. 19. The trio formed by David Draiman from Disturbed  has recruited a star-studded lineup of guest musicians for ‘Device.’ Among those making appearances are Black Sabbath  bassist  Geezer Butler , Deep Purple  singer-bassist  Glenn Hughes , Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows , System of a Down  singer  Serj Tankian , Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Halestorm ‘s Lzzy Hale . The band’s touring lineup consists of Draiman,  Evanescence  drummer Will Hunt and Dope / Eve to Adam guitarist Virus. Former Filter guitarist Geno Lenardo wrote and recorded the album with Draiman, but will not tour with the outfit. Draiman recently discussed how happy he was with Hale’s appearance. “For years I’d wanted to re-do ‘Close My Eyes Forever’ by Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne. I always thought it was a fantastic idea and needed the right combination of elements and events and needed to have the right woman to play the role of Lita in this song, and Lzzy Hale, in my opinion, is the strongest, most distinctive voice, female voice, in rock today. I think that she’s just as good as it gets.” Device have some concert dates scheduled in support of their debut album. They’ll play in Switzerland later this month, and then have several festival dates lined up for the spring and summer. You’ll be able to see them at Rock on the Range, Carolina Rebellion, Welcome To Rockville Festival, Lazerfest 2013 and elsewhere.
