Dave Grohl Hopes to Perform ‘Sound City’ Shows Around the World

Theo Wargo, Getty Images You can never get too much of a good thing and Dave Grohl knows that the magic provided by the Sound City Players is something that music fans need to see. After an epic performance at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this month and another scheduled show at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles Jan. 31, Grohl says he’s open to staging more of the star-studded concerts. The ‘ Sound City ‘ director that gathered all the talent in the first place tells Billboard , “We plan to do shows all over the world. When I came up with the idea of taking all these performers to the live stage a few months ago, my idea [was] to have video presentations between each performance. We’ll have that at the next shows.” The first two Sound City Players dates have included guest appearances from Stevie Nicks , John Fogerty , Cheap Trick ‘s Rick Nielsen , Slipknot ‘s Corey Taylor , Fear’s Lee Ving, Rick Springfield and members of Rage Against the Machine , Nirvana , Queens of the Stone Age and more. Fan-shot video of the Sound City Players featuring Corey Taylor and Rick Nielsen covering Cheap Trick’s ‘Surrender’ may be seen below. The concerts are helping to promote Grohl’s ‘Sound City’ documentary, which not only tells the story of the legendary Los Angeles recording studio but also serves as a love letter by some of rock’s greats to the idea of collaboration in a room and the bonds formed playing live music together. Grohl says, “I knew I didn’t want it to be a retrospective documentary, the history of the studio. [The story] has an emotion quality to it and it had some relevance … ‘Sound City’ has been home to so many influential albums, but also to so many beautiful stories about people and their relationships. It’s such a deeper story than a ‘Behind the Music’ that would talk about ‘Damn the Torpedoes.’ The film will screen in theaters around the world on Jan. 31, with additional screenings set up throughout the month of February. Corey Taylor Performs ‘From Can To Can’t’ Live With Dave Grohl’s Sound City Players

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com / Kevin Winter, Getty Images Dave Grohl may have successfully upstaged his own ‘Sound City’ documentary screening at Sundance when he followed it up with a concert for the ages. The live spectacle featured his Sound City Players and included 17 different guest musicians playing over three hours of music at the Park City, Utah event on Jan. 18. While Grohl’s Foo Fighter bandmates were a major part of the evening acting as the backbone for his band, the stage was a revolving door of special guests from Slipknot’s Corey Taylor to Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielson and Grohl’s former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic . For the classic music lovers in the crowd Stevie Nicks and John Fogerty also joined Grohl onstage, making the evening one to remember. Fan filmed footage from the event is starting to surface and one of the highlights is Corey Taylor’s performance of the new song ‘From Can To Can’t.’ ‘From Can To Can’t’ was penned specifically for the ‘Sound City’ movie soundtrack dubbed ‘Sound City – Real To Reel,’ due out on March 12. Joining Taylor on the official recording for this tune were Rick Nielsen and former Kyuss bassist Scott Reeder with Grohl handling drum duties. Although recreating a concert of that magnitude may be hard to reproduce, Grohl and his Sound City Players are going to try it one more time when the documentary makes it’s Los Angeles, Calif. premiere on Jan. 31. Dave Grohl Shares Admiration for ‘Sound City’ Collaborators Corey Taylor + Paul McCartney

Michael N. Todaro / Jason Merritt / Larry Busacca, Getty Images The ‘Sound City’ documentary gave Dave Grohl a chance to work with a who’s who of music, while also showcasing the legendary Sound City studio and using the board that’s been responsible for creating so many great albums. Among Grohl’s collaborators were Paul McCartney and Corey Taylor , who appear on the first two singles from the ‘Sound City’ soundtrack, and the musician-turned-director has spoken more about both pairings. Joining Taylor on Los Angeles’ ‘ Kevin & Bean ‘ morning show, Grohl stated that he was a little starstruck by his ‘ From Can to Can’t ‘ collaborator. He explains, “When I first met [ Slipknot ‘s] Corey [Taylor] or the guys from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, those are bands that I really love and I spent a lot of time listening to their music and when you meet that person in the flesh, you get a little nervous.” As for Taylor and his take on working with Grohl, the singer explained, “You want to talk about a checkmark off my bucket list, I’ve been wanting to work with Dave forever. When he invited me to be a part of this movie, it was like, ‘Oh, by the way, I’ve got this music, would you like to put this together?,’ and I just went, ‘(scream) Duh, I’m already in the car on my way.’” Arguably the biggest name on the album is Paul McCartney, and Grohl considers himself lucky to have ingratiated himself over the years to where he can just call the musician. Of the collaboration on ‘ Cut Me Some Slack ,’ Grohl recalls, “As we were filming all these performances, I was like, ‘Hey dude, why don’t you come down and jam?’ He’s like, ‘OK.’ So he comes down and brings THE BASS that he’s played for 40 years and the Les Paul that there’s only four of in the world and then he brings this guitar made out of a cigar box. It’s called a Cig Fiddle, and he’s like, ‘Oh, I think I’ll play this. Why don’t you go play the drums?’ … and we just jammed. We wrote this song in about an hour and we recorded it.” He added that it was McCartney that spurred the decision to debut it at the 12-12-12 benefit concert, suggesting that they play the song that he and Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear had jammed out eight months prior. One thing that’s a common denominator in how records were made at Sound City and for the movie’s soundtrack was the human element. Grohl says, “[What it’s all about is] the human element of music and what it’s like to just get together with a person and write a song in a room in a day and it doesn’t have to be perfect, but that’s how the magic happens.” The ‘Sound City’ documentary made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival  Friday night (Jan. 18) and the movie will screen in theaters  beginning Jan. 31. Dave Grohl’s Sound City Players Rock the Sundance Film Festival

Jason Merritt, Getty Images Dave Grohl ‘s ‘Sound City’ documentary has enjoyed its first film festival screening and the singer topped it off with a concert that Sundance Film Festival goers will be buzzing about for years to come. Rolling Stone reports that Grohl’s heavily hyped Sound City Players show clocked in at over three hours, with 17 musicians taking turns on the stage enjoying their time with the Park City, Utah crowd. Grohl broke down the evening into mini-sets, with his Foo Fighters bandmates serving as the de facto house band for a majority of the night. Grohl also had a chance to pay homage to some of his collaborators, discussing the first time he heard Fear’s Lee Ving and knowing that he wanted to be a musician or talking about jamming to Cheap Trick ‘s ‘Surrender’ as a drunk sixteen-year-old. The evening also featured extended sets with Rick Springfield, Stevie Nicks and John Fogerty , while Slipknot ‘s Corey Taylor joined Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen for some of the guitarist’s tracks. In addition, Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic , Queens of the Stone Age ‘s Alain Johannes and Masters of Reality’s Chris Goss shuffled in and out during the proceedings. Speaking at the film’s premiere about the ‘Sound City’ documentary, Grohl told the audience, “I consider this to be the most important thing I’ve ever done, artistically, of all the albums I’ve made, of all the bands I’ve had the pleasure of being in. I really feel like the ‘Sound City’ movie, its intention is to inspire the next generation of kids to fall in love with music as much as I did.” As to whether or not directing is an experience he would like to repeat, the musician coyly responded, “I started the Foo Fighters as a hobby, and that was 20 years ago.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/dave-grohl-sound-city-players-perform-after-los-angeles-film-premiere/” title=”Next: Dave Grohl to Bring Sound City Players to Los Angeles Premiere” align=”center”]

Dave Grohl + Corey Taylor ‘Sound City’ Collaboration ‘From Can to Can’t’ Surfaces

Theo Wargo / Kevin Winter, Getty Images It’s hard to follow in Paul McCartney ‘s footsteps , but if there’s anyone with the balls and pedigree to do it, Corey Taylor would be that man. The Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman, who seemingly has his hands in everything, was one of the participants in Dave Grohl ‘s ‘Sound City’ documentary and a new song featuring Taylor from the soundtrack has surfaced online. ‘From Can to Can’t’ received its premiere on the BBC today and a radio rip of the track has surfaced online courtesy of a radio rip from  Antiquiet  (listen here). The track, which also features Cheap Trick ‘s Rick Nielsen and former Kyuss bassist Scott Reeder with Grohl on drums, is a slow builder. Taylor puts his emotion into the track as it goes from mid-tempo to full-on rocker. Both Taylor and Nielsen will be on hand as part of Grohl’s Sound City Players when the star-studded film premiere concert takes place this Friday (Jan. 18) in Park City, Utah at the Sundance Film Festival. Nielsen will also perform at the post Los Angeles premiere concert bash , as well, on Jan. 31. The ‘Sound City’ soundtrack arrives in stores March 12. Stone Sour’s Corey Taylor Offers Deeper Look Into ‘House of Gold & Bones’ Comics

Dark Horse Comics So far, music fans have been indulging in ‘ House of Gold & Bones, Pt. 1 ,’ the first of a two-part musical installment from Stone Sour . But those who’ve been following Corey Taylor ‘s exploits know that the music is only a portion of the ambitious scope the singer has for his latest artistic output. Coinciding with the second album release this April, fans will get to check out a corresponding comic book series . Taylor told Comic Book Resources , “The last 10 years of my life have been the most formative. I realized I was on the threshold of the rest of my life — I had an idea of who I wanted to be as a man and I realized who I was at the time didn’t exactly jibe with what that idea was. So I started the process of changing for the better … ‘House of Gold & Bones’ is loaded with that journey, but it also has a lot of pieces from my friends’ lives — some are a lot more ahead of the curve than others, but we all are trying to do the same thing: trying to figure it all out. That’s why I wanted to tell the story in the first place — to put it all in perspective and find my place in it all.” The singer says the comic series story spills out like a contemporary fable, with the hero waking up in a world he doesn’t understand and learning more about himself than he could have ever imagined. While the two albums tell part of the story, Taylor says it’s been enjoyable to translate the tale and expand on some of the ideas with the comic series. He’s also found that his two artistic loves balance each other out. “Both genres are fathomless when it comes to possibilities,” says Taylor. “But in music, you only really get the emotion of the singer or the music, which makes it hard if you’re trying to convey the emotion of the scene. With comics, you get that snapshot of emotion: the looks on the faces, the color of the sky, the veins in people’s necks, but you don’t get the fluid feel of being in the moment, like film or music. I hope between the two, we’ll be able to put these pieces together perfectly.” The first issue of the “House of Gold & Bones’ comic series arrives April 17. Artist Richard P. Clark’s variant cover for issue No. 1 is shown above. For more on Taylor’s discussion about comic books and more exclusive images, check out Comic Book Resources’ full interview  here .
