Dave Grohl Talks ‘Sound City’ Documentary and More on ‘The Colbert Report’

Comedy Central Dave Grohl has been all over TV recently. Supporting his new documentary, ‘Sound City,’ which chronicles the legendary albums that have been the recorded at Sound City Studios, Grohl graced ‘The Colbert Report’ stage on Feb. 13 to promote the film. Prolific musician and rock’s most lovable overachiever Dave Grohl was in New York City last night to perform with the Sound City Players, a group of musicians who have recorded at Sound City Studios, including Grohl’s Foo Fighters bandmates, Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk , Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic , Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks, rock legend John Fogerty + many more. Before the NYC performance, however, Grohl stopped by ‘The Colbert Report’ for an hilarious interview with host Stephen Colbert. Having recently finished guest-hosting the E! talk show ‘Chelsea Lately’ for a week, Dave Grohl answered Colbert-esque questions such as, “You sold 30 million copies of Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ alone, why not phone it in and get fat?” and “Do you think about the [‘Nevermind’] sessions now and go, ‘Why didn’t we turn up the drums?’” After naming off a litany of artists who recorded on Sound City’s board such as Rage Against the Machine, Barry White and the now-imprisoned Charles Manson, Grohl shot the funny right back at Colbert. “The first thing we had to do when we got it [the Sound City board] was open it up and scrub all the cocaine and fried chicken out of it,” Grohl joked. “And that was just Barry White!” Check out Dave Grohl’s full interview with Steven Colbert via the video player below. Dave Grohl Rocks With Krist Novoselic, Corey Taylor + More at L.A. ‘Sound City’ Show

Kevin Winter, Getty Images Dave Grohl had perhaps the biggest and most impressive celebration for his ‘ Sound City ‘ film to date, with one rocker after another lining up to take the stage as part of his Sound City Players performance at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles Thursday night (Jan. 31). The gig followed a red-carpet premiere of the Grohl-directed documentary. We were lucky enough to attend the incredible concert, during which the one constant throughout the evening was Grohl, who performed on every single song, whether it be on drums, guitar or bass. The ‘Sound City’ mastermind started the evening on bass while his Queens of the Stone Age cohort Alain Johannes led the crowd through a rocking set that included the Queens album track ‘Hangin’ Tree’ as well as the ‘Sound City’ contribution ‘A Trick With No Sleeve.’ Masters of Reality’s Chris Goss was next, but his set was bolstered with some power drumming from Rage Against the Machine ‘s Brad Wilk. The hard rocking performance featured the infectious beat of ‘She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress On)’ and the moody ‘Sound City’ soundtrack song ‘Time Slowing Down.’ Grohl stuck around on drums for a brief set featuring Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s Peter Hayes and Robert Levon Been. The performance included the ‘Sound City’ cut ‘Heaven and Hell’ as well as a sped-up, jammed out ‘Whatever Happened to My Rock and Roll.’ While the early performances were enjoyable, the energy level seemed to pick up with the introduction of Fear frontman Lee Ving and his “one-two-three-four” openings for every song. Ving got the amped up crowd rocking to the sing-along ‘I Love Living in the City’ and ‘Beef Bologna.’ There were smiles all around as Grohl and guitarist Pat Smear in particular got to exercise their hardcore roots and Hawkins was getting in some rapid-fire drumming. Arguably the rocking highlight of the night came next with Slipknot  /  Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor leading an inspired Cheap Trick set featuring that band’s own Rick Nielsen on guitar and a guest appearance by Nirvana ‘s Krist Novoselic on bass. Taylor whipped the crowd into a frenzy with ‘Hello There,’ making sure the “ladies and gentlemen” of the audience were “ready to rock.” For the first time during the evening, there was audible singing from the crowd on such favorites as ‘Ain’t That a Shame’ and ‘Surrender.’ During the latter track, one lucky audience member went home with a some vinyl as Nielsen tossed an old record into the crowd to coincide with one of the lyrics. Taylor also received a warm response for the recently debuted ‘ From Can to Can’t ‘ from the ‘Sound City’ soundtrack. The most levity of the evening came with Rick Springfield’s set, with the rocker visibly having a good time playing off drummer Taylor Hawkins , tossing his guitar in the air, and at one point getting a wry smile after missing a mark in ‘Love Is Alright Tonight.’ Dave Grohl joked around with Springfield throughout the set, offering the most stage banter of the evening. At one point he congratulated Springfield after the first three notes of ‘Jessie’s Girl’ rang out to loud cheers. Grohl laughingly joked that Springfield had truly made it by penning a song that everyone knew after hearing one second. Springfield also brought some good time rocking to the night with ‘I’ve Done Everything for You’ and ‘Love Somebody’ during his performance. For guitar lovers, former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman  John Fogerty ‘s performance was a pure treat. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer expressed his joy at taking part and said that all of the people in the film had one thing in common — their love for Grohl. Fogerty’s performance consisted of such well known favorites as ‘Travelin’ Band,’ ‘Born on the Bayou,’ ‘Centerfield,’ ‘Proud Mary’ and ‘Bad Moon Rising’ and the full lineup appeared to be most in sync of any performance during the evening. But perhaps the biggest surprise in the set was the wicked guitar work laid down by Fogerty during the CCR track ‘Keep on Chooglin’,’ with much of the band laying back in awe before both Grohl and Chris Shiflett got in a full-on synchronized jam with Fogerty. Fully enjoying the moment, the rock vet threw his arm around Shiflett’s head and later hugged Grohl. Fogerty’s set ended with a duet with Grohl on the classic ‘Fortunate Son.’ Already clocking in at three-plus hours, the ‘Sound City Players’ concert rounded out with a huge response for Stevie Nicks . She returned the audience affection with a solid yet brief set that opened with ‘Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around’ and ‘Dreams,’ before taking things down with an intimate version of ‘Landslide’ with only Grohl on guitar and some brief accompaniment from Rami Jaffe on accordion and Jessy Greene on violin. Nicks and the entire Foo Fighters lineup finished out the night with a full-on jam of the Fleetwood Mac classic ‘Gold Dust Woman.’ In addition to all the great performances, the night also featured highlights from the ‘Sound City’ documentary which brought all the musicians together in the first place. The film is currently available for purchase as a download here and can be seen in select theaters across the U.S. [button href=”http://loudwire.com/dave-grohl-hopes-to-perform-sound-city-shows-around-the-world/” title=”Next: Dave Grohl Hopes to Bring ‘Sound City Players’ Around the World” align=”center”] Dave Grohl and Stevie Nicks at Sound City Players Concert in L.A. Corey Taylor Performs ‘From Can To Can’t’ Live With Dave Grohl’s Sound City Players

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com / Kevin Winter, Getty Images Dave Grohl may have successfully upstaged his own ‘Sound City’ documentary screening at Sundance when he followed it up with a concert for the ages. The live spectacle featured his Sound City Players and included 17 different guest musicians playing over three hours of music at the Park City, Utah event on Jan. 18. While Grohl’s Foo Fighter bandmates were a major part of the evening acting as the backbone for his band, the stage was a revolving door of special guests from Slipknot’s Corey Taylor to Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielson and Grohl’s former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic . For the classic music lovers in the crowd Stevie Nicks and John Fogerty also joined Grohl onstage, making the evening one to remember. Fan filmed footage from the event is starting to surface and one of the highlights is Corey Taylor’s performance of the new song ‘From Can To Can’t.’ ‘From Can To Can’t’ was penned specifically for the ‘Sound City’ movie soundtrack dubbed ‘Sound City – Real To Reel,’ due out on March 12. Joining Taylor on the official recording for this tune were Rick Nielsen and former Kyuss bassist Scott Reeder with Grohl handling drum duties. Watch video of the live performance of ‘From Can To Can’t’ here . Although recreating a concert of that magnitude may be hard to reproduce, Grohl and his Sound City Players are going to try it one more time when the documentary makes it’s Los Angeles, Calif. premiere on Jan. 31. Dave Grohl Shares Admiration for ‘Sound City’ Collaborators Corey Taylor + Paul McCartney

Michael N. Todaro / Jason Merritt / Larry Busacca, Getty Images The ‘Sound City’ documentary gave Dave Grohl a chance to work with a who’s who of music, while also showcasing the legendary Sound City studio and using the board that’s been responsible for creating so many great albums. Among Grohl’s collaborators were Paul McCartney and Corey Taylor , who appear on the first two singles from the ‘Sound City’ soundtrack, and the musician-turned-director has spoken more about both pairings. Joining Taylor on Los Angeles’ ‘ Kevin & Bean ‘ morning show, Grohl stated that he was a little starstruck by his ‘ From Can to Can’t ‘ collaborator. He explains, “When I first met [ Slipknot ‘s] Corey [Taylor] or the guys from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, those are bands that I really love and I spent a lot of time listening to their music and when you meet that person in the flesh, you get a little nervous.” As for Taylor and his take on working with Grohl, the singer explained, “You want to talk about a checkmark off my bucket list, I’ve been wanting to work with Dave forever. When he invited me to be a part of this movie, it was like, ‘Oh, by the way, I’ve got this music, would you like to put this together?,’ and I just went, ‘(scream) Duh, I’m already in the car on my way.’” Arguably the biggest name on the album is Paul McCartney, and Grohl considers himself lucky to have ingratiated himself over the years to where he can just call the musician. Of the collaboration on ‘ Cut Me Some Slack ,’ Grohl recalls, “As we were filming all these performances, I was like, ‘Hey dude, why don’t you come down and jam?’ He’s like, ‘OK.’ So he comes down and brings THE BASS that he’s played for 40 years and the Les Paul that there’s only four of in the world and then he brings this guitar made out of a cigar box. It’s called a Cig Fiddle, and he’s like, ‘Oh, I think I’ll play this. Why don’t you go play the drums?’ … and we just jammed. We wrote this song in about an hour and we recorded it.” He added that it was McCartney that spurred the decision to debut it at the 12-12-12 benefit concert, suggesting that they play the song that he and Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear had jammed out eight months prior. One thing that’s a common denominator in how records were made at Sound City and for the movie’s soundtrack was the human element. Grohl says, “[What it’s all about is] the human element of music and what it’s like to just get together with a person and write a song in a room in a day and it doesn’t have to be perfect, but that’s how the magic happens.” The ‘Sound City’ documentary made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival  Friday night (Jan. 18) and the movie will screen in theaters  beginning Jan. 31. Dave Grohl’s Sound City Players Rock the Sundance Film Festival

Jason Merritt, Getty Images Dave Grohl ‘s ‘Sound City’ documentary has enjoyed its first film festival screening and the singer topped it off with a concert that Sundance Film Festival goers will be buzzing about for years to come. Rolling Stone reports that Grohl’s heavily hyped Sound City Players show clocked in at over three hours, with 17 musicians taking turns on the stage enjoying their time with the Park City, Utah crowd. Grohl broke down the evening into mini-sets, with his Foo Fighters bandmates serving as the de facto house band for a majority of the night. Grohl also had a chance to pay homage to some of his collaborators, discussing the first time he heard Fear’s Lee Ving and knowing that he wanted to be a musician or talking about jamming to Cheap Trick ‘s ‘Surrender’ as a drunk sixteen-year-old. The evening also featured extended sets with Rick Springfield, Stevie Nicks and John Fogerty , while Slipknot ‘s Corey Taylor joined Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen for some of the guitarist’s tracks. In addition, Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic , Queens of the Stone Age ‘s Alain Johannes and Masters of Reality’s Chris Goss shuffled in and out during the proceedings. Speaking at the film’s premiere about the ‘Sound City’ documentary, Grohl told the audience, “I consider this to be the most important thing I’ve ever done, artistically, of all the albums I’ve made, of all the bands I’ve had the pleasure of being in. I really feel like the ‘Sound City’ movie, its intention is to inspire the next generation of kids to fall in love with music as much as I did.” As to whether or not directing is an experience he would like to repeat, the musician coyly responded, “I started the Foo Fighters as a hobby, and that was 20 years ago.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/dave-grohl-sound-city-players-perform-after-los-angeles-film-premiere/” title=”Next: Dave Grohl to Bring Sound City Players to Los Angeles Premiere” align=”center”]

Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic Recounts Entire Story Behind Paul McCartney Collaboration

Saturday Night Live With all the excitement that’s come from the surviving members of Nirvana writing and performing and recording an original song with Beatles icon Paul McCartney , there are a million questions about the musical collective’s future. Will the spontaneous collaboration lead to more material? Will there be a tour? How exactly do you persuade Sir Paul McCartney to come jam in your basement? To list off the mental ramblings of Nirvana and Beatles fans would fill an encyclopedia, but bassist Krist Novoselic has got some inside info to share via his official blog. Paul McCartney himself has told the tale of how he found himself in the middle of a “Nirvana reunion,” but Novoselic has now documented his side of the story as a casual musician who was offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “The collaboration came out of the Sound CIty film that was produced and directed by Dave,” writes Novoselic. “He asked me if I wanted to play with him, Pat and Paul? I said YES! It was a wonderful day — Paul came in with this cigar box guitar and started playing some mean slide on it. He said it was in a “D”. Hearing that, Grunge instincts took over my left hand and I dropped the E on the bass to D. Pat and Dave got into it and the tune took shape. Paul flashed a riff and we picked it up. I busted another one out and everyone picked it up. Things started coming together.” Novoselic continues to recount the dream jam session, while offering his view on exactly what the track ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ represents for the future of the impromptu band. “It was so exciting to play with Paul,” gushes the Nirvana bassist. “I became seized with thoughts, for I hadn’t played like that with Pat or Dave since the last Nirvana show in 1994. Wow, it was emotionally and musically heavy! Some other things brought me back; there was a Lefty on guitar who was a heck of a songwriter. Anyway, words can’t really describe it and I returned to the task at hand. A new song was born! And that’s about it. That’s all it is — a new song by some players who have doing it for a while.” ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ has been performed live twice by the group, debuting the track at the ’12-12-12′ Hurricane Sandy benefit, with an encore on ‘Saturday Night Live’ soon after … not bad for a band without a name. According to Novoselic in a separate blog post , although the project has been called many names, the bassist’s personal favorite seems to be ‘Sirvana,’ which offers a nod to the Beatle legend’s status as Sir Paul McCartney Sirvana’s sole original song is now available to purchase via iTunes .
