10 Best Rock Albums of 2012

Jim Dyson, Getty Images / Michael N. Todaro, Getty Images / Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com The year 2012 turned out to be a strong one for rock albums. We saw the highly anticipated return of '90s favorites Soundgarden , the continued brilliance of acts like Deftones and Stone Sour , the emergence of females in hard rock courtesy of Halestorm and Dead Sara , among others, to go along with memorable releases from a number of other rock acts. Unfortunately, all of our favorite albums couldn't make this list, but after much debate among our entire staff, we've come up with our official picks for the best rock albums of the year. If metal is more your speed, don't worry, we've got a separate list for you headbangers. But for now, strap in and turn it up, as we count down the 10 Best Rock Albums of 2012: ? 10 'Dark Adrenaline' Lacuna Coil ? ? Lacuna Coil's 'Dark Adrenaline' album, released early on in 2012, finds the band rediscovering their gothic roots while expanding their sound in the process. 'Trip the Darkness' was a dark sounding gem off the record, and the song got an extra boost when a remix by Dillinger Escape Plan 's Ben Weinman appeared on the 'Underworld: Awakening' soundtrack. 'Fire' showed off a more radio-friendly side, while 'End of Time' served as the band's late year ballad. The disc also included an interesting cover of R.E.M.'s 'Losing My Religion.' Listen to 'Trip the Darkness' ? ? 9 'King Animal' Soundgarden ? ? The promise of Soundgarden's 2009 reunion was finally realized in 2012, as the band released their 'King Animal' album in November. The grunge goliath's first new album since 1996 proves that Soundgarden are still on top of their game. 'Been Away Too Long' became a major hit at radio, while tracks like 'Non-State Actor' and 'Worse Dreams' generated plenty of buzz in advance of the album. Chris Cornell 's voice is as strong as ever, and the full band feels as though they haven't lost a step. Welcome back, Soundgarden, and kudos for delivering one of the 10 best rock albums of 2012. Listen to 'Been Away Too Long' ? ? 8 'Amarylllis' Shinedown ? ? Shinedown had a tough task in matching the success of 2008's 'The Sound of Madness,' but they succeeded in cranking out another hits-filled collection with 'Amaryllis,' certainly showing that there is no slowing down this juggernaut. Both 'Bully' and 'Unity' took the band back to the top of the charts. And the group got great mileage out of 'Enemies' and 'I'll Follow You,' making for a very successful 2012. Look for the output to continue, with the single 'Miracle' lined up to hit radio in early 2013. Listen to 'Bully' ? ? 7 'Born Villain' Marilyn Manson ? ? For longtime fans of Marilyn Manson, 'Born Villain' provided a much welcome creative resurgence. The lead single 'No Reflection' was just the sort of gritty-meets-groovy rocker that the singer built his career upon, and 'Slo-Mo-Tion' and 'Overneath the Path of Mystery' show the true depth of the record. In addition, Manson got some notice for including the bonus cover of 'You're So Vain' with his longtime pal Johnny Depp. Listen to 'No Reflection' ? ? 6 'Harakiri' Serj Tankian ? ? The man of many musical inspirations, System of a Down singer Serj Tankian found his latest solo disc embracing rock, punk and new wave, among other genres. 'Harakiri' earns its spot as one of the 10 best rock albums of 2012 by delivering socially-minded statements through infectious songs. 'Figure It Out' is an in-your-face track that pulls no punches, while 'Cornucopia' showcases Tankian's versatile talents as a musician. But the standout cut just might be the title track, which features a chorus as catchy as any in System of a Down's catalog. Listen to 'Figure It Out' ? ? 5 'The Strange Case of …' Halestorm ? ? Halestorm went from being the “next big rock band” to fulfilling that prophecy with 'The Strange Case Of…' The group rocketed up the charts in early 2012 with the single 'Love Bites … So Do I' and the attitude that Lzzy Hale provided set the tone for the rest of the disc. They enjoyed crossover pop success with 'Here's to Us,' but once again embraced their hard-rock fans with the scorching track 'I Miss the Misery,' which shows off Hale at her belting best. Listen to 'Love Bites (So Do I)' ? ? 4 'Yellow & Green' Baroness ? ? Baroness may not get as much attention as some of the bigger names on this list, but the band delivered one of the best front-to-back efforts of 2012. The two-disc collection 'Yellow & Green' features such standout tracks as 'March to the Sea,' 'Take My Bones Away' and 'Board Up the House.' Unfortunately, the band wasn't able to support the album as much as they has planned, as a terrifying bus crash led to major injuries and kept Baroness off the road for much of the year. Listen to 'Take My Bones Away' ? ? 3 'Dead Sara' Dead Sara ? ? Looking for the next big rock band? It's worth a look at Dead Sara and their self-titled breakout album. The group garnered notice for their single 'Weatherman,' which features Emily Armstrong's powerhouse vocals and some terrific guitar work from Siouxsie Medley, but the disc as a whole is great. Second single 'We Are What You Say' is another notable track, while songs like the chilling ballads 'Dear Love' and 'Sorry for It All' should deserve a longer look in 2013. Listen to 'Weatherman' ? ? 2 'House of Gold & Bones, Pt. 1' Stone Sour ? ? You can't have a Best Rock Albums of 2012 list without Stone Sour's ambitious record 'House of Gold & Bones, Part 1.' Singer Corey Taylor got things rolling with the double-single 'Gone Sovereign' and 'Absolute Zero,' both of which set a hard-driving tone for the disc. Meanwhile, 'Taciturn' shows that the band can hit hard even when not rocking out at 11, providing one of the more moving songs on the record. We have no doubt that 'House of Gold & Bones,' with the second half of the double album coming next year, will play a major role in 2013. Listen to 'Gone Sovereign' ? ? 1 'Koi No Yokan' Deftones ? ? Deftones have found their creative rebound in recent years, and they're making sure to pounce while it's going good. Fresh off the critically acclaimed 'Diamond Eyes' album, the band continues to rock at the top of their game. 'Koi No Yokan' hits on all cylinders with cuts like the single 'Tempest,' and standout tracks 'Leathers,' 'Poltergeist' and 'Rosemary.' With the disc just arriving in mid-November, it looks as though Deftones will have plenty to celebrate over the next year – starting with being named Loudwire's Best Rock Album of 2012. Listen to 'Tempest' ? ? What's Your Favorite Rock Album of 2012? There you have it — the 10 Best Rock Albums of 2012 — at least in our opinion. But that's why we have a comments section. You can let us know if we hit it right on the head, if there's any glaring omissions, or if there's an album you think has no right even making the cut. 10 Best Rage Against the Machine Songs

Sony The best Rage Against the Machine songs showcase the band's unique ability to deftly mix rap and rock to deliver music of the most powerful kind: politically charged, pointed and with a purpose. Frontman Zack de la Rocha's venom and vitriol was wrapped around a message, and he was often seen performing maniacally, with his signature dreads flailing around his head, while Tom Morello's guitar functioned like a turntable, thanks to whammy bars and wah-wahs. The rhythm section of bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk added some bluesy and jazzy heft. All those factors combined were what made the music so explosive and incendiary. While RATM's catalog of studio albums isn't vast by any means, the superb quality of the music the band has produced is undeniable. Here, we present our picks of the 10 Best Rage Against the Machine Songs: ? 10 'Freedom' From: 'Rage Against the Machine' (1992) ? ? 'Freedom' closes out the band's debut album, and it's full of bluesed out, groovy riffing, chippy percussion, pulsing tension, a blunt theme, pregnant pauses and false outros, a jazzy breakdown (starts at 2:09) and mostly rapped lyrical delivery. The slowly builds to a monster breakdown and the moment when Zack de la Rocha screams, “Freedom? Yeah right!,” RATM have you in their musical vice grip. It's one of the 10 Best Rage Against the Machine songs because the music is as combustible as the message. It must've sucked to have been a politician when RATM were in their prime, pointing out all that ails the government machine. Listen to 'Freedom' ? ? 9 'Testify' From: 'The Battle of Los Angeles' (1999) ? ? 'Testify' features an effects-laden performance from Tom Morello, while Zack de la Rocha is as fired up as ever. There is a lot of distortion and chaos all over the song, so much so that it might mess with your equilibrium. The song encapsulates all the elements that Rage fan have come to love: anger, groove, aggressive, turntabling guitars. It's also clearly a band favorite, since they opened several of their reunion shows with the song. Listen to 'Testify' ? ? 8 'Bombtrack' From: 'Rage Against the Machine' (1992) ? ? It could be argued that all Rage Against the Machine tracks are bombtracks, but the actual (and literal) 'Bombtrack' is another exercise in RATM's deftness with rising and falling tension, which is executed with masterful precision. On a purely sonic level, it fuses just the right amount of rap and rock. It's probably the least overly political song of the band's self-titled debut, but it's still fun to scream “Burn, burn, yes you're gonna burn” in the chorus. Fire it up. Listen to 'Bombtrack' ? ? 7 'People of the Sun' From: 'Evil Empire' (1996) ? ? 'People of the Sun' is one of the 10 Best Rage Against the Machine tracks, partly due to the story that Morello dragged a pencil and a wrench against his guitar strings in the beginning to make those definitive sounds. We can't even begin to come up with a name for that sound, but it's inimitable. The song features de la Rocha largely rapping in his clear and concise way. There were other versions of this song floating around prior to 'Evil Empire' being released, but this is the most well known and it made quite the impact. Listen to 'People of the Sun' ? ? 6 'Sleep Now in the Fire' From: 'The Battle of Los Angeles' (1999) ? ? 'Sleep Now in the Fire' addresses the plight of Native Americans in the context of American colonialism. The point is hammered home by de la Rocha's rapid-fire raps, and since his syntax and diction are always clear as a bell, it's hard (but not impossible) to ignore what he's ranting about. Morello drops a feedback-fueled solo and it again leaves us wondering if he moonlighted as DJ Tommy M during the band's heyday. Listen to 'Sleep Now in the Fire' ? ? 5 'Know Your Enemy' From: 'Rage Against the Machine' (1992) ? ? 'Know Your Enemy' opens with funkdafied riffing, before quickly escalating into a punky rock track. Some of Morello's riffage sounds influenced by Metallica in a few parts of the song. It's one of the most noteworthy RATM songs because it features a guest vocal from Tool's Maynard James Keenan, who delivers his distinct, nasally vocal over a chunky breakdown, singing “I've got no patience no / So sick of complacence now.” Two '90s alt metal titans collided in the space of one song. “Legendary” pretty much sums it up. Listen to 'Know Your Enemy' ? ? 4 'Bulls on Parade' From: 'Evil Empire' (1996) ? ? Lyrically, 'Bulls on Parade' addresses the governments usage of military contracts for revenue purposes. Musically, well, Morello whammies like his life depends on it. Then there's the solo (which comes in at the 2:30 mark), where he sounds like he is scratching vinyl, 1985 rap music style. See what we mean about Morello making his axe sound like a turntable? That sound is most prominent on 'Bulls on Parade,' and that's why it is a standout track. Listen to 'Bulls on Parade' ? ? 3 'Bullet in the Head' From: 'Rage Against the Machine' (1992) ? ? Rage Against the Machine raged against the fact that the media is controlled by the government in this fan favorite anthem, easily one of the band's best songs. 'Bullet in the Head' is erected on thudding rhythms, rising and falling tension throughout the song and more of Morello's whammy barring away. It sounds like he is playing a sampler onstage. In 1992, that was unheard of. Take that, Electonic Dance Music fans! The groove-laden breakdown at three minutes in a moshpit igniter. De la Rocha also gets credit for screaming “a bullet in your f—ing head” with such fervor that our blood pressure went up a few notches. Listen to 'Bullet in the Head' ? ? 2 'Guerilla Radio' From: 'The Battle of Los Angeles' (1999) ? ? 'Guerilla Radio,' which earned the band a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance, is more polished than anything on their debut, but it's still frontloaded with chaos, wah-wahs, some '70s bass thwap courtesy of Commerford and Morello's “spinning.” When Zack de la Rocha barks, “Turn that s— up,” the listener is compelled to follow his orders…stat. And damn if Morello's riffing doesn't sound like a MacBook at 2:30 in. He was so ahead of his time and ahead of the curve. Listen to 'Guerilla Radio' ? ? 1 'Killing in the Name' From: 'Rage Against the Machine' (1992) ? ? 'Killing in the Name' is the most explosive RATM song. It's funky, bass-driven opening, it's subsequent build up of tension throughout the verses and choruses, de la Rocha's repeated whispering, “Now you do what they told ya” to Morello's wailing during the 'F— you I won't do what you tell me' crescendo embodies everything that RATM were about. It's not pretty, the music blows up in your face like a nailbomb and makes you stare down things that are difficult. You don't need to see it live to know de la Rocha's veins in his temples are bulging when he spews those lyrics best accompanied by a middle finger salute. That's why 'Killing in the Name' tops our list of the best Rage Against the Machine songs. Listen to 'Killing in the Name' ? ? Favorite Rage Against the Machine Song? Now that you've gone through and combed our 10 Best Rage Against the Machine Songs list, how about you tell us your thoughts. Agree? Disagree? Is there anything we left off, of which you feel you can argue a strong case for inclusion? Let us know in the comments section below: ?

10 Songs to Blast on Black Friday

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire The beginning of the ultimate shopping season officially kicks off with Black Friday. And even though November is about family and Thanksgiving and getting together, it also seems to be about ripping each other apart for a good sale. Heavy metal fans know a thing or two about disorder, but the crowds at these massive chain retailers would give the most violent mosh pits a run for their money. So, to help you prepare for this mayhem, we have put together a playlist to complement the utter chaos of your shopping experience on Black Friday: ? 'It's On' Korn ? ? While you’re digesting your corn from your Thanksgiving meal, you can blast ‘It’s On’ by Korn when you head out the door early Friday morning. Hearing singer Jonathan Davis belt out ‘Come On / It’s On’ along with rattling bass lines, crashing cymbals and heavy riffs is enough to pump you up for the shopping day of reckoning. Listen to Korn, 'It's On' ? ? 'Bodies' Drowning Pool ? ? We've all seen the videos of people getting stomped on and pushed out of the way for a sale. So we thought Drowning Pool's lead single off their debut album ‘Sinners’ would be the perfect song while watching all of the violence go down on Black Friday. The chorus of the song ‘Let the bodies hit the floor’ says it all. Listen to Drowning Pool, 'Bodies' ? ? 'I Stand Alone' Godsmack ? ? Godsmack’s tune ‘I Stand Alone' is one for the individuals who are brave enough to tackle the shopping duties of ‘Black Friday’ by themselves. Sometimes the best way to shop is to be a one person army, and frontman Sully Erna sings it best when he belts, “I stand alone / Inside, I stand alone.“ Listen to Godsmack, 'I Stand Alone' ? ? 'Iron Army' In This Moment ? ? For some, shopping solo is the way to go, but for others they like to go forward and take advantage of the sales with an army. Frontwoman Maria Brink spits out the chorus, “I built myself a f—ing iron army.” The battleground for this militia in this case would be the mall or those major retail stores so make sure you build a good f—ing army for this year’s Black Friday. Listen to In This Moment, 'Iron Army' ? ? 'Crusher Destroyer' Mastodon ? ? It’s no secret that Black Friday is known to bring out the worst in some people. Even your local librarian becomes a raging, cart-pushing, credit-card-swiping machine. If you turn into this type of person, as well, you’ve probably been listening to Mastodon’s ‘Crusher Destroyer.’ With chaotic drum patterns and blistering riffs it’s difficult not to go into a state of ultimate obliteration. “Less contenders on the way / Today let them pay “ and they're not talking of a payment that’s cash or credit. Listen to Mastodon, 'Crusher Destroyer' ? ? 'Perseverance' Hatebreed ? ? Whether it’s ‘Perseverance’ or just plain madness that makes you head to the store at 3AM for the hottest deals on that new television or game console, make sure you blast Hatebreed’s anthem of strength as you prepare yourself for an early day of shopping mayhem. Heed singer Jamey Jasta’s words of wisdom: “Perseverance / Against all opposition / Crushing all limitations / Pure strength through solitude / Discipline and determination.” Listen to Hatebreed, 'Perseverance' ? ? 'A New Level' Pantera ? ? This one is for the guys, who by the end of Black Friday, have reached ‘A new level of confidence and power.’ Pantera’s ‘A New Level’ off of ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ is the perfect anthem for a dude who’s arms are cramping with all the bag holding and waiting around when they could be sleeping or eating leftovers. Listen to Pantera, 'A New Level' ? ? ‘Bring the Fight (To The Floor)’ DevilDriver ? ? Their have been many fights on the floor… of Walmart, K-Mart and any other mart you can name. DevilDriver’s ‘Bring the Fight (To the Floor)’ off their album ‘Beast’ is the perfect song for barbaric shoppers especially with lyrics “Bring the fight / Bring the fight / To the floor / No price for power.” If there is a price for power, it better be on sale this Friday! Listen to DevilDriver, ‘Bring the Fight (To The Floor)’ ? ? 'Pain Is a Master' Gojira ? ? After you’ve fought on the floor, you’ll start feeling the pain on Saturday. With aching bones and sore muscles Gojira’s ‘Pain Is a Master’ from their latest album ‘L’Enfant Sauvage’ is one to keep in mind while you’re hurting. Sure the song starts off harmless at the beginning, but it soon unravels into utter chaos, just like Black Friday. Listen to Gojira, 'Pain Is A Master' ? ? 'People = S–t' Slipknot ? ? During your outing on Black Friday or when you finally get home and dump all of the bags to the side, when you look back on the pushing and shoving and those who have skipped you in lines you’ll realize that many people do in fact equal s—. We round out our list with Slipknot’s venomous track ‘People = S–t’ because the band does have a point in the song title, particularly when it comes to the savagely traditional behavior of the human race on Black Friday! ? What Is Your Favorite Black Friday Song? Now that you've seen our list of tracks that represent the ambiance of Black Friday tell us your favorites. Can You Guess Which Rocker This Mustache Belongs To?

It’s time to guess the mustache! Mustaches are synonymous with kung-fu masters and ’70s adult film stars, among others, but there are plenty of legendary musicians who show off some sweet crumb-dusters of their own. We’ve teamed with Ultimate Classic Rock and Diffuser.fm for a game all mustache enthusiasts will enjoy: View a close-up of a rocker’s facial push-broom and then guess who it belongs to. Our first mustache (to the left) is a distinguished one: elegant, yet expressive. It commands respect while conveying the disposition of a man who can kick back with the guys and enjoy a nice pint of lager. Think you know who this ‘stache belongs to? What If Every Rocker Turned Into a Zombie?

Charley Gallay, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com If the famed zombie apocalypse were to happen, it’s obvious that rock and metal’s finest musicians would be among the most dangerous. Being starstruck certainly wouldn’t help as you attempt to run for your life, and those brave enough to ask for an autograph would most likely end up as brunch for the undead. It may be a strange experience meeting the zombified version of your favorite musician, so to help in the identification process and limit any sort of uncertainty, we’ve put together a collage with the theme of ‘What If Every Rocker Turned Into a Zombie’ with the help of MakeMeZombie.com . Axl Rose: ‘Live?!’ vs. ‘Like a Suicide’ Even if Axl Rose had the zombie infection consume his brain, leaving the singer as nothing more than a mindless flesh-eater, he probably still wouldn’t appear for a Guns N’ Roses reunion. Perhaps the feud is instinct by this point, where even the most primal areas of his brain retains the opinion that his former bandmates are jerks. Scott Gries, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com Corey Taylor vs. Gory Taylor Assuming Corey Taylor isn’t wearing his Slipknot mask when he gets bit, this is the singer’s future zombie face. It’s a shame that those lovely blue eyes will turn a rotten yellow, but Taylor is still in there somewhere, as evidenced by the cigarette carefully placed behind his ear. Ethan Miller, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com Nikki Sixx vs. Nikki Sixx Sixx Sixx Now that’s a zombie face! Drug overdoses couldn’t kill Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx , even when he was actually pronounced dead, so this zombified Nikki Sixx is strictly hypothetical. Valerie Macon, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com Amy Lee: ‘My Last Breath’ vs. ‘Bring Me to Life’ Zombie or not, Evanescence singer Amy Lee can still inspire a profound rush of blood to you-know-where. If you find zombie Amy Lee during your escape from hoards of flesh-eating freaks, we strongly advise against trying to put the moves on Lee. Such a mistake will result in dire consequences … use your imagination. Danny Martindale, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com James Hetfield vs. James Deadfield Admittedly, Metallica’s James Hetfield looks pretty awesome as a zombie. As one of the kings of the ‘tough metal guy’ face, Hetfield would likely be seen as some sort of zombie elite. Though a zombie Hetfield would be depressing for fans, at least there would be a guarantee of no more ‘Lulu’ performances. Stephen Lovekin, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com Rob Halford: ‘Living After Midnight’ vs. ‘Killing Machine’ Here comes the Killing Machine! Not even the ‘Metal God’ is immortal against the zombie virus. Imagine Rob Halford riding full speed on the ‘Painkiller’ motorcycle, sawing through drooling undead monsters in an attempt to save the world. He’d leave a fairly impressive line of entrails behind, but if Halford was to get bit, this would be the result. Theo Wargo, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com Dave Mustaine vs. Grave Mustaine Damn, zombie Dave Mustaine looks a little worse for the ware in his zombified state. Apparently, the zombie virus causes a select few to develop a nasty case of lazy eye. Have you ever seen a carrot-topped zombie? If so, kindly tell us what film in the comments section. Seriously, we need to see a redheaded zombie. Kevin Winter, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com Maynard James Keenan: ‘The Patient’ vs. ‘The Hollow’ It would be a great tragedy to lose the brains of Maynard James Keenan , especially if they’re eaten by infected freaks. If you stumble upon the brain of Maynard Keenan during your exodus from Arizona, please preserve it in a jar for the possibility of some great post-apocalyptic music. George De Sota, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com Trent Reznor: ‘Pretty’ vs. ‘Hate Machine’ Tough break, Trent . One of those damn zombies snatched out your eyeball and sucked out your brilliant brain through the socket. Admittedly, the Nine Inch Nails mastermind still looks pretty handsome, and as long as that gorgeous wife of his remains healthy, an undead life could still have its moments. Ethan Miller, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com ‘The Prince of Darkness’ vs. ‘The Prince of Deadness’ Sharon!!! Ozzy Osbourne looks pretty terrifying as a member of the undead. The ‘Bark at the Moon’ singer would probably be better suited as a werewolf, but unfortunately the choice rarely belongs to the victim. Charley Gallay, Getty Images / MakeMeZombie.com Rob Zombie vs. uhhhhh… Rob Zombie Oh man, we tried to zombify  Rob Zombie , but he ended up looking exactly the same! Could it be that the musician and filmmaker has been among the walking dead this entire time? If so, this whole zombie apocalypse thing could happen during Zombie’s next altercation with Marilyn Manson. If he sinks his teeth into Manson, the virus would spread throughout rock concerts worldwide. We’re not about to stop going to shows, so the infection seems unavoidable. Goodbye, cruel world; a life without rock concerts would turn our brains into mush anyway.
