Testament and Overkill Bring the Love to Metal Heads in New York City

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire What better way to spend Valentine’s Day that with some thrash metal? Testament and Overkill rocked New York City’s Best Buy Theater on Thursday Feb. 14 along with support from Flotsam and Jetsam and 4arm for the ‘Dark Roots of Earth’ Tour. Testament got a warm welcome from their very energetic fans who crowd surfed nonstop and belted out songs with frontman Chuck Billy. They began their set with the new track ‘Rise Up’ from their latest record ‘Dark Roots of Earth,’ and also worked in a wealth of other songs from the disc such as ‘Native Blood,’ ‘True American Hate’ and the title track ‘Dark Roots of Earth.’ Guitarist Alex Skolnick shredded like none other as the crowd rocked out throughout the evening to such favorites as ‘Over the Wall,’ ‘Into the Pit’ and ‘New Order.’ Overkill gave an incredible performance ahead of Testament. Vocalist Bobby Blitz’s force onstage was completely infectious as the band kicked off their set with ‘Come and Get It’ and ‘Rotten to the Core.’ To see Blitz charge the microphone during songs from the side of the stage throughout their set just reinforced the power of their music. They East Coast natives ended their powerful performance with ‘Elimination’ and their rendition of the Subhumans favorite ‘F— You.’ Arizona rock vets Flotsam and Jetsam and Aussie metallers 4arm began the night with passionate performances as well. Black Veil Brides Deliver Rock ‘N’ Roll Sermon to the Wild Ones in Massachusetts

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com It may have only been a Saturday night, but when the Black Veil Brides rolled into the Palladium in Worcester, Mass., on Jan. 26, church was officially in session. With their ‘Church of the Wild Ones’ tour now in full swing, the Black Veil Brides resided over their pulpit delivering a sermon of good-for-the-soul, raw, rock ‘n’ roll. Rife with theatrics, gratuitous guitar solos, and just enough attitude to carry it all off, the Black Veil Brides deliver a live show that’s reminiscent of the decadence of glam rock in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s but completely transformed for a new generation, or an army as the case may be. Their fans, known as the BVB Army, were out in full force paying homage to the band with face paint and all the signature BVB trappings. Frontman Andy Biersack, bassist Ashley Purdy, guitarists Jake Pitts and Jinxx and drummer CC Coma – collectively known as the Black Veil Brides, rang in the new year with their latest disc ‘Wretched and Divine: The Story of the Wild Ones’ – a conceptual disc that largely inspired their current stage show and set list. From kicking off the show with ‘I Am Bulletproof’ to new tracks like ‘Nobody’s Hero,’ ‘Wretched and Divine’ and ‘Shadows Die,’ the set list brilliantly showcases their latest work. With that in mind, fans hoping to hear music from BVB’s first two discs won’t be disappointed on this tour at all. ‘We Stitch These Wounds’ was represented with tracks like ‘Knives and Pens’ and the single ‘Perfect Weapon.’ 2011’s ‘Set the World on Fire’ provided some of the loudest crowd sing-a-longs of the evening from ‘Fallen Angels’ to ‘The Legacy’ and ‘Rebel Love Song.’ The Black Veil Brides are a young band building on something big. With a vision for their music that includes not just the audible but the visual and visceral, the Black Veil Brides provide more than just a concert, it’s an overall rock experience. In addition, they seem to understand the importance of the intangible things in the music world like the relationship they’ve cultivated with their fans throughout the years. The Black Veil Brides continue their tour run through the beginning of March; check out all of the remaining tour dates here . Nikki Sixx Takes New Creative Direction With ‘Schecter Sixx’ Bass

Kathy Flynn, WickedGoddessPhotography.com Nikki Sixx is a man of many passions, as evidenced by his career as a successful author, photographer and radio host as well as the musical work he’s best known for as a member of Motley Crue and Sixx: A.M . On Saturday (Jan. 26), Sixx was able to reveal his latest creative venture, the new ‘Schecter Sixx’ signature series bass , during the NAMM convention in Anaheim, California. In a roundtable discussion with a handful of media outlets, including Loudwire, Sixx spoke about his transition from being a longtime supporter of Gibson to taking an active role in the creation of his new bass with Schecter. The bassist revealed, “I was very loyal to Gibson for a lot of years, [but] towards the last few years it sort of became … the quality of the instrument became not very consistent and it became frustrating for me … some would sound great and some wouldn’t.” Over time, Sixx says he began to consider making a change and after meeting with Schecter, he knew he had found a kindred spirit. “When I met with Schecter it was like an instant fit where we really seemed to understand each other,” says Sixx. “[We agreed on] what was best for the consumer, the player, as well as for me, as for the fit of what I feel the bass is about and we put together this bass and this is it. I’m really excited.” The bassist says that making an all-purpose instrument was the big key for him, adding, “I wanted to have it not only for me in recording, but for other players to have a little bit of versatility. I loved the kill switch in my other basses. I just hotwired everything past the volume and the tone so that I could just on-off. But when I get in the studio that didn’t necessarily work for me, so I would reach for another bass at times. So I wanted this bass to be the bass while I’m recording and I’m always recording. I think with technology we’re always laying down ideas now, so I didn’t want to have to search out a different instrument for that.” Sixx says he also loved incorporating the P Bass pickups in the rear position with the EMG’s up front to provide a little more flexibility. He’s also fond of the sleekness of the instrument and how the weight-distribution has made it less neck-heavy. Overall, Sixx says he’s very satisfied making the transition to Schecter, concluding, “I just enjoy being creative. Whenever I can get in a circle with other creative people and just jam and see stuff happen, it’s really exciting. What’s been really exciting about Schecter and working with the design of the bass, we’re talking about the sound and the feel and how the company works together in delivering the message, that’s all creative stuff. It’s all good stuff.” Check out the details and specs of the ‘Schecter Sixx’ bass here , and stay tuned for more from our roundtable discussion with Nikki Sixx, including the latest on Motley Crue and Sixx: A.M. Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Stone Sour , Papa Roach and Otherwise brought the heat Tuesday night (Jan. 23) to a sold-out crowd that needed to be warmed up after stepping into New York City’s Terminal 5 on an extremely cold night outside. For anyone who has seen frontman Corey Taylor in action, it’s evident that he gives it his all when performing. Stone Sour gave a phenomenal performance as they began their set with their dual singles ‘Gone Sovereign’ and ‘Absolute Zero’ off their latest album, ‘House of Gold & Bones Part 1.’ They also played other new tunes such as ‘A Rumor of Skin,’ ’RU486,’ ‘The Travelers (Part 2)’ and ‘Last of the Reel.’ The crowd joined Taylor in belting out hits such as ‘Bother’ and ‘Through Glass’ and went crazy when Stone Sour performed favorites such as ‘Made of Scars,’ ‘Reborn’ and ‘30/30-150.’ Earlier in the night, co-headliner Papa Roach proved that the band is ‘Still Swingin’ as they kicked off their set with that very song. Despite having surgery on his vocal cords only a few months ago, singer Jacoby Shaddix delivered powerful performances of other tracks off their latest disc, ‘The Connection,’ such as ‘Where Did the Angels Go,’ ‘Silence Is the Enemy,’ ‘Give Me Back My Life’ and ‘Before I Die.’ The band also rocked out well known hits like ‘Getting Away With Murder,’ ‘Scars,’ and ‘Hollywood Whore.’ And fans really lost their minds as Papa Roach ended their set with a rousing rendition of ‘Last Resort.’ Otherwise kicked off the rocking night of music with a vigorous performance as they played various tracks off of their album ‘True Love Never Dies.’ Frontman Adrian Patrick and his brother, guitarist Ryan Patrick, have a certain energy, connection and perceptiveness onstage.
