No Comments »Underoath Say Farewell to New York Fans With Vigorous Performance
January 19th, 2013 Metalkult Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Underoath performed their second show at Irving Plaza this week and their final date ever in New York City Thursday night (Jan. 17) as part of their farewell tour. The show also featured a strong support lineup, with engaging sets from mewithoutYou, As Cities Burn and Letlive . The evening began with openers Letlive, who will be headlining shows of their own soon enough. With the band’s powerful songs and undeniable stage presence, Letlive performed as if it were their last show in New York City (thankfully it’s not). Frontman Jason Aalon Butler dove into the crowd numerous times and even made his way onto the balcony where he was holding on for dear life while belting out lyrics. As Cities Burn followed with a high energy performance as they got fans singing and audience members crowd surfing. The pace slowed down when mewithoutYou took the stage. The Philadelphia-based outfit brought their indie and experimental sound to the line-up and vocalist Aaron Weiss had the grace of a ballerina onstage whether he was singing, hopping, playing accordion or the tambourine. As “Underoath” chants began to increase in volume, the band embraced the warm welcome the New York City crowed provided. They kicked off their set with three strong tracks — ‘Breathing in a New Mentality,’ ‘It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door’ and ‘In Division.’ Diehard fans also sang along to favorites such as ‘In Regards to Myself,’ ‘Paper Lung,’ ‘Reinventing Your Exit’ and numerous others. Even though frontman Spencer Chamberlain stated that he was feeling under the weather, he and the rest of the band gave a stellar performance that their New York fans won’t soon forget. Underoath rounded out the set with ’Casting Such a Thin Shadow,’ ‘A Boy Brushed Red Living in Black and White’ and ‘Writing on the Walls.’ For a full list of remaining dates to Underoath’s Farewell tour, click here . January 6th, 2013 Metalkult Frazer Harrison, Getty Images Machine Head ‘s Robb Flynn has plenty to get off his chest and he’s reviving his online diaries as his forum. Among the topics on his mind as part of his ‘ The General Journals: Diary of a Frontman … and Other Ramblings ‘ missive was his recent performance at the Mitch Lucker Memorial Show, honoring the late Suicide Silence frontman with an acoustic cover of Black Sabbath ‘s ‘Die Young.’ Flynn says the night was rife with emotion and he, as much as anyone, was nervous about what he would deliver to the event. The vocalist says, “Suicide Silence guitarist Mark Heylmun and I spent the previous night working on my acoustic cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘Die Young.’ We soundchecked it twice with Scott on tremolo guitar; I was surprisingly nervous, maybe because it was the first time playing it live, maybe not being able to rely on my usual bravado/attitude/’roar’ was a bit daunting. It was 3 acoustics and a vocal, naked and all about the passion.” The frontman says he was surprised at the “amazingly good reception” he received and got a bit choked up toward the end of the song, but he was proud about nailing the high scream in the bridge. “It was weird though,” says Flynn. “The choking up made it more real. There was a lot of emotion in the air and people were moved. They felt something. We all did. I bet even Mitch did.” The performance can be seen in the video posted below. Flynn also used his online diary as a forum to discuss his most recent favorite albums — Stone Sour ‘s ‘House of Gold & Bones, Pt. 1′ and He Is Legend’s ‘It Hates You.’ Of Stone Sour, Flynn admits that he wasn’t that much of a fan in the past, but says he can’t stop listening to the new disc. “This new stuff is freakin’ ridiculously good,” says Flynn. “The production is massive, freaking MASSIVE! Jay Ruston did a fantastic job on the mix — great arrangements, great lyrics. ‘Absolute Zero’ is a stone cold monster rock tune.” Flynn also singled out ‘Taciturn’ and ‘Influence of a Drowsy God’ among his favorite cuts. As for He Is Legend, the Machine Head frontman says he just recently discovered the band’s music. He adds, “I haven’t been so blown away by a band in a long time, sort of like Alice in Chains meets ‘Diamond Eyes’-era Deftones , but released before Deftones made ‘Diamond Eyes.’ [They’ve got] insanely amazing rock vocals, super down-tuned guitars, cool ambient parts with some seriously legit metal guitar chops.” He counts ‘That’s Nasty’ and ‘China White III’ off the ‘It Hates You’ record as some of his top songs. December 17th, 2012 Metalkult Liz Ramanand, Loudwire No matter where your personal musical taste falls, you’ve got to give some serious respect to Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn . Soon after an emergency surgery to take care of two hernias in the area of his giggleberries, Flynn was hit in the family jewels by a New York City cab. After a four-hour hospital stay, Flynn rushed to the Best Buy Theater to perform that night’s set with his band, leading to an onstage diss in the direction of All That Remains for apparently refusing to switch set times despite Flynn’s debacle. Machine Head have experienced an odd month during the tail-end of 2012. Along with the metal act receiving a ban from the Orlando, Fla. House of Blues by The Walt Disney Company, Machine Head have run into some bad luck with Flynn’s hernia issues. The howling frontman toughed it out and returned to his band’s tour with Dethklok , All That Remains and the Black Dahlia Murder a few weeks after his surgery, and was almost taken out again by the NYC cab in a hit-and-run. However, there seems to be yet another issue in the life of Flynn, this one situated between himself and the members of All That Remains, as evidenced by a rant directed toward the New York City audience. Flynn addressed the crowd: About two days ago we played and the All That Remains guys asked us to flip-flop with them because their singer got stuck in traffic. And you know, we’ve been flip-flopping this whole tour so we were like, “Yeah, man, you know what? It’s no big deal, we’ll flip flop.” Because that’s what you do, you look out for your brothers, right? And today, I got hit by a cab, right where I had surgery four weeks ago, in my nuts. I got clipped in a hit and run. I spent the last four hours in the f—ing hospital and unfortunately I had to f—in’ rush back here — and actually, it is fortunate, because I’m very happy to be standing on this stage — but I had to fucking rush back here because nobody could f—ing switch, man, nobody could flip-flop, because that’s just how it is, I guess. That’s how it is when you look out for your brothers some of the time. This tour, I’ll tell you what, this tour has been so f—ing insane for us, man, we’ve had so many crazy things, and even things that affected you people: Hurricane Sandy. We’ve had surgeries, we got banned by f—ing Disney, all this f—ing bulls–t and you know what? Nothing is gonna f—ing stop us, nothing is gonna f—ing stop us, because we live to do this. We’re so f—ing honored, we’re so f—ing proud to be able to do this for you. According to one of our reporters, who was covering the New York City concert, All That Remains singer Phil Labonte addressed the issue onstage, claiming that he would have agreed to swap sets if he had been informed of Robb Flynn’s situation. November 19th, 2012 Metalkult Liz Ramanand, Loudwire Intensity is a total understatement when Lamb of God come to town, but when you add In Flames , Hatebreed and Sylosis to the mix, the energy is indescribable. New York’s Roseland Ballroom shook to its core these bands took the stage on Friday night (Nov. 16). UK metal band Sylosis kicked off the night with a great performance that got the blood of early concertgoers pumping. Hatebreed fans are ‘As Diehard as They Come’ and the band is one whose music can elicit a variety of emotions. Their live shows enforce these emotions and definitely tested the strength of Roseland Ballroom’s foundation. The pits were complete chaos and security guards could barely keep up with the amounts of bodies flying over the crowd. Frontman Jamey Jasta’s hardcore roots are evident onstage, not to mention his infectious and uncontrollable stage presence had everyone bouncing to the band’s anthems of strength and power such as ‘Perseverance,’ ‘In Ashes They Shall Reap,’ ‘Live For This,’ and ‘I Will Be Heard,’ among others. They ended their set with ‘Destroy Everything,’ and that they did. In Flames were the ideal bridge to go in between the very volatile Hatebreed set and headliners Lamb of God. They broke up the high intensity sets with a little bit of melody and humor. That doesn’t mean fans took a break – the crowd remained steady with massive amounts of crowd surfing, jumping, mosh pitting and singing. Frontman Anders Friden humorously said that any band who directly follows Hatebreed sounds like a fart, well In Flames set that night was far from the sound of flatulence. Friden sounded phenomenal as the group performed tracks from their most recent release ‘Sounds of a Playground Fading’ — such as ‘Where the Dead Ships Dwell,’ ‘Deliver Us’ and ‘Fear Is the Weakness.’ Of course the Swedes pulled out some fan favorites such as ‘Cloud Connected,’ ‘Take This Life’ and ‘My Sweet Shadow’ just to name a few. The booming sound of Lamb of God took control of Roseland Ballroom and everyone in it. Fans lost their minds as the rumbling riffs and galloping drums of ‘Desolation’ took hold. The band went on to perform their debut single ‘Ghost Walking’ off of ‘Resolution.’ As vocalist Randy Blythe spat out the lyrics with venom, the crowd screamed lyrics word for word back to him during tracks such as ‘No You’ve Got Something to Die For,’ ’11th Hour,’ ‘ Ruin,’ ‘Laid To Rest,’ ‘Redneck’ and ‘Black Label,’ among numerous others. With the year Randy Blythe has had to go with the few weeks New York City and the rest of the Tri-State area has had to deal with, this concert and these bands gave many metal fans a sense of normalcy and command that they might have thought they lost for a while. Soundgarden Perform Surprise Set During Chris Cornell’s Hurricane Sandy Benefit Show
November 13th, 2012 Metalkult Antonio Marino Jr., MarinoPics.com With their new disc ‘King Animal’ out today (Nov. 13), Soundgarden gave New York one heck of a preview yesterday. They kicked the day off with a special performance for ‘Live on Letterman’ that was streamed via a live webcast allowing fans around the word to tune in. Performing a 10-song set, the band focused on their new music showcasing several tracks from ‘King Animal’ but also played some of their classic tunes as well like ‘Fell on Black Days’ and ‘Incessant Mace.’ Check out our recap and whole archived show here . After ‘Live on Letterman,’ Cornell set his sights on helping out those impacted by Hurricane Sandy with a benefit show at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. Although the show was billed as a solo acoustic show, some fans must have held out hope that the rest of the band would join Cornell onstage at some point in the night, and during the evening, that wish came true. According to Brooklyn Vegan , the rest of the band assisted Cornell with six Soundgarden songs: ‘Fell On Black Days,’ ‘Black Saturday,’ ‘Blow Up the Outside World,’ ‘Halfway There,’ ‘Black Hole Sun,’ and ‘Outshined.’ Fan-filmed footage of ‘Black Saturday’ can be seen below in addition to Chris Cornell’s solo performance of ‘Hunger Strike.’ Soundgarden aren’t finished with New York yet, as tonight the band will play a headlining show at Irving Plaza. The concert is one of three 2012 club gigs that were announced before the band unveiled their 2013 touring plans . The three-disc version will be available Nov. 19 exclusively at Best Buy. In addition to the 15-track version of the album that includes bonus tracks ‘Crazy Life’ and ‘Carolina,’ there are also eight unreleased acoustic tracks from the group’s Guitar Center sessions including Velvet Revolver’s ‘Fall to Pieces’ and Guns N’ Roses’ ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine.’ The third disc is the DVD ‘Live From NY,’ which was filmed at Irving Plaza in New York City (click the button at the bottom of this post to read our review of that show). A collectible guitar pick tin also comes with the special enhanced edition. ‘Apocalyptic Love’ has now spawned two No. 1 rock radio singles. After the debut single ‘You’re A Lie’ marked Slash’s first-ever rock radio chart-topper as a solo act, the follow-up ‘Standing in the Sun’ has also reached the top spot. A different special edition of the album will be released in Europe on Dec. 3.
