Machine Head’s Robb Flynn Joins Tony La Russa + Friends at Animal Rescue Foundation Benefit

Machinehead1.com Machine Head have built their fan base over a steadily strong career, but singer Robb Flynn still gets surprised by who some of his fans are. The rocker reveals in his latest journal that former baseball manager Tony LaRussa and his family have shown their fandom for his work in recent years, which is something that still blows him away. Flynn says, “Life has a funny way of playing out, how seemingly innocuous encounters can take you to place you never thought you’d go. Flash back to about a year and a half ago … I’m walking through Whole Foods in Walnut Creek, talking on the phone to my friend Tom when a lady and her daughter approach me wide-eyed. ‘Are you f—ing Robb Flynn?!’ … ‘I could be …’ They scream and make a big ‘ol to-do, ‘Oh my God, we’re huge fans, I love ‘The Blackening,’ I’m Tony LaRussa’s wife!’” Then, just last year when the band returned to play the Warfield in San Francisco, the LaRussa family came to the show. Flynn recalls, “My baseball fanatic dad FREAKS OUT, and Tony L blows my mind when he tells me that I ‘have so much charisma, he wishes he could bottle it and make his players drink it.’ Wow!!?? I’m not worthy!” After speaking some more, Flynn says they bonded over the fact that he got his dog from the Animal Rescue Foundation that LaRussa founded. The vocalist says he and LaRussa exchanged information and the manager reached out to him about attending his annual benefit. LaRussa also asked if he would perform as an anniversary gift for his metal-loving wife. The singer admits he was nervous, but says LaRussa’s intro was great. He recalls, “Tony LaRussa’s intro blew me up!! Dude rules. After that intro I could have farted for 10 minutes and people would have at least politely clapped. Did ‘Die Young’ first, went down good. I sang the end a lot better than at the Mitch [Lucker] benefit, and then came time for the debut of the acoustic version of ‘Darkness [Within],’ just me and an acoustic, no sing-alongs, no band to kick in the heavy — a new version I had never played live. It worked, it totally worked. I nailed most of it, was a little flat in some parts at the very end, but overall it felt good and I was proud of myself for taking up the challenge.” Flynn returned for the finale, joining all the evening’s performers and headliner Tony Orlando in taking on ‘Hey Jude’ with a little bit of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ thrown in to rock out. The evening also gave the singer a chance to meet some of his comedy heroes like Robin Williams and Dana Carvey. Machine Head’s Robb Flynn Talks Moving Performance at Mitch Lucker Memorial Concert

Frazer Harrison, Getty Images Machine Head ‘s Robb Flynn has plenty to get off his chest and he’s reviving his online diaries as his forum. Among the topics on his mind as part of his ‘ The General Journals: Diary of a Frontman … and Other Ramblings ‘ missive was his recent performance at the Mitch Lucker Memorial Show, honoring the late Suicide Silence frontman with an acoustic cover of Black Sabbath ‘s ‘Die Young.’ Flynn says the night was rife with emotion and he, as much as anyone, was nervous about what he would deliver to the event. The vocalist says, “Suicide Silence guitarist Mark Heylmun and I spent the previous night working on my acoustic cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘Die Young.’ We soundchecked it twice with Scott on tremolo guitar; I was surprisingly nervous, maybe because it was the first time playing it live, maybe not being able to rely on my usual bravado/attitude/’roar’ was a bit daunting. It was 3 acoustics and a vocal, naked and all about the passion.” The frontman says he was surprised at the “amazingly good reception” he received and got a bit choked up toward the end of the song, but he was proud about nailing the high scream in the bridge. “It was weird though,” says Flynn. “The choking up made it more real. There was a lot of emotion in the air and people were moved. They felt something. We all did. I bet even Mitch did.” The performance can be seen in the video posted below. Flynn also used his online diary as a forum to discuss his most recent favorite albums — Stone Sour ‘s ‘House of Gold & Bones, Pt. 1′ and He Is Legend’s ‘It Hates You.’ Of Stone Sour, Flynn admits that he wasn’t that much of a fan in the past, but says he can’t stop listening to the new disc. “This new stuff is freakin’ ridiculously good,” says Flynn. “The production is massive, freaking MASSIVE! Jay Ruston did a fantastic job on the mix — great arrangements, great lyrics. ‘Absolute Zero’ is a stone cold monster rock tune.” Flynn also singled out ‘Taciturn’ and ‘Influence of a Drowsy God’ among his favorite cuts. As for He Is Legend, the Machine Head frontman says he just recently discovered the band’s music. He adds, “I haven’t been so blown away by a band in a long time, sort of like Alice in Chains meets ‘Diamond Eyes’-era Deftones , but released before Deftones made ‘Diamond Eyes.’ [They’ve got] insanely amazing rock vocals, super down-tuned guitars, cool ambient parts with some seriously legit metal guitar chops.” He counts ‘That’s Nasty’ and ‘China White III’ off the ‘It Hates You’ record as some of his top songs. I See Stars Fill Suicide Silence’s Spot on 2012 Outbreak Tour

Facebook: I See Stars It’s been a roller-coaster few weeks for I See Stars , who were bounced off Falling in Reverse ‘s ‘ The Thug in Me Is You ‘ fall trek after disagreements with FIR singer Ronnie Radke . However, the group has rebounded rather well, filling the vacancy left by Suicide Silence on the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour . Headliners Asking Alexandria welcomed the band on board, and the group will play between tour openers Atilla and Memphis May Fire in the lineup. Suicide Silence had to drop out of the run after the tragic death of singer Mitch Lucker during a motorcycle crash on Halloween night. Asking Alexandria guitarist Ben Bruce said in a statement: First and foremost I would like to talk about a dear friend of mine who was prematurely taken from us this month. Mitch Lucker was one of the kindest and most passionate people I have ever had the pleasure of calling my friend. My thoughts are not only with his family and friends, but also with the millions of people, worldwide, who Mitch helped to mold and inspire into the people they are today. A great man was lost who’s love and passion reached all corners of the globe. As many of you know, Suicide Silence were preparing to join us on our upcoming ‘Outbreak’ Tour. Due to the devastating circumstances they will no longer be joining us physically. They will however, Mitch included, be with us in spirit. We will go out on this tour with As I Lay Dying , Memphis May Fire & Attila to pay our tributes and respects to Mitch and his brothers in Suicide Silence. A portion of all tickets and official tour t-shirts sold will go to Mitch‘s daughter for the Kenadee Lucker Education Fund. Suicide Silence could never be replaced on our tour as they are the only band in the world who could bring their element, intensity and power to the line-up. For the sake of giving the fans the best show we can under the circumstances, we have decided to add Sumerian Records family members I See Stars to the bill, NOT AS A REPLACEMENT BY ANY MEANS, but as another band who’s love and passion for music and their fans is as tried and true as ours. Now, more than ever, we need to come together to celebrate our collective love of music and to show compassion & solidarity in our scene. It’s time to put aside all petty differences and remember what it is that brings us all together, the music. Mitch – from myself and everyone else who will be taking part in this tour, you are forever in our hearts. This one’s for you. We love you. Cheers – Ben Bruce The Monster Energy Outbreak Tour launches Nov. 16 in Edmonton, Alberta and runs through a Dec. 16 finale in Tampa, Fla.
