System of a Down’s Daron Malakian Dishes on Politics and Religion

Kevin Winter, Getty Images Guitarist Daron Malakian ( System of a Down , Scars on Broadway ) sat down for an interview with KROQ recently, with the conversation turning towards politics and religion. After a slight dejection from Malakian, the guitarist found himself diving into the topic, sharing his views on President Obama’s first term, how organized religion can destroy the personal experience, global terrorism + much more. Malakian spoke about President Obama’s first term and compared the ‘cult of personality’ honed by Obama to that of Bill Clinton. “Anybody who thinks that Obama was gonna come and fix that mess in three or four years is nuts,” says Malakian. “I mean, that by itself… You’ve gotta give him a little bit more time. I think he’s doing an alright job. I ain’t got no beef with Obama. But I’ll tell you this much: he is a politician, like everybody else, and he’s a damn good one. Because he can really make you like him. [It’s the job of politicians] to bulls–t people and to make them like you, and he is king at it. He might be a little better than [Bill] Clinton, actually.” Later in the interview, Malakian continued with the political discussion, bringing religion into the mix. “I’ll be honest with you: politically, I have no issue with people, but my beef sometimes is with religion at the end of the day,” Malakian explains. “And that offends people, I guess, more than telling people what to do. But I just think a lot of people… Politicians use religion and they get their troops riled up with religion. And it’s not just here with Christianity, it’s… Those dudes, like [Osama] Bin Laden, these dudes are all politicians themselves.” He continues, “They use the simple-minded and the poor and they promise them things and that’s how they rile up their troops using religion. And we don’t see that as the same as our politicians, but they play the same games with their people over there as the politicians play with the people over here to get them riled up, to go to war… ‘You’re fighting for freedom.’ I just think religion is something… It could be a beautiful thing for the individual, but when it becomes organized, that’s when religion starts taking a kind of ugly turn to me.” Scars on Broadway are set to embark on a North American tour with  Deftones . The trek kicks off Oct. 9 in Ventura, Calif. Tommy Lee Sued Over Roller Coaster Drum Design

Kevin Winter, Getty Images Motley Crue  shows are made even more entertaining by the antics of drummer Tommy Lee .  For many male fans, tops on the list is the portion of the show where Lee encourages ladies to show a certain part of their anatomy on camera. Right behind that is Lee’s roller coaster drum solo. However, that drum design is now part of a lawsuit. As previously reported, an engineer named Scott King wrote a letter to Motley Crue’s lawyers, saying he pitched the idea for the drums more than 20 years ago and was turned down.  He claims Lee used his design during Motley Crue’s 2011 tour, wants compensation, and threatened to sue. Lee’s lawyers responded to King’s letter by denying Lee stole King’s idea. Now, according to TMZ , King has officially filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court. He is demanding at least $400,000 in damages. Meanwhile, Lee is about to turn 50, and apparently he made a pact  with ex-wife Pamela Anderson that if they were both single at 50 they would remarry. But Anderson recently told Ellen DeGeneres that she doesn’t remember making that pact.  So it doesn’t look like a reconciliation is in the cards. Anderson has been in the spotlight lately, being the first person to be eliminated in the current all-star season of  ‘Dancing With The Stars.’ The couple divorced in 1998, but have two kids together and remain close. Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Daughter Design ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’ T-Shirt

Kevin Winter, Getty Images Foo Fighters frontman  Dave Grohl is getting some serious daddy-daughter points by signing on to design a ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’ t-shirt with his daughter Violet. Audio Ink reveals that the shirts are aimed at the younger demographic, and the tee designed by the Grohl father-daughter team (shown below) features three of the ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’ characters drawn and colored by Violet against a white t-shirt backdrop. You can also make out a faintly drawn character with an emo haircut and devil horns with a halo hovering overhead, which might be the work of Violet’s dad. The shirt is just one of many created by musicians and/or their offspring. Rocker Jack Black created a shirt with his many facial expressions revealed in various colors against a green t-shirt backdrop, while the Tenacious D singer and his son Sam teamed up on a “Brobee” t-shirt with a white backing. The Flaming Lips ‘ Wayne Coyne, Devo ‘s Mark Mothersbaugh, actor Jon Heder and rapper Biz Markie have also created special shirts for the ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’ line.
