Rick Springfield on Working With the Foo Fighters: It Was a Great Experience

Kevin Winter, Getty Images / Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com The Foo Fighters may be on an indefinite hiatus , but with Dave Grohl’s upcoming documentary on the historic Sound City recording studio on the horizon, there are still some new Foo Fighters collaborations to look forward to. One of those songs includes a tune penned with Rick Springfield, who recorded his 1981 disc ‘Working Class Dog’ at the legendary studio. The Foo Fighters and Rick Springfield joined forces to write a song called ‘The Man Who Never Was’ which Springfield told Billboard is “a relationship song” inspired by a true tale from World War II. Springfield described working with the Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighers as a “great experience” saying, “They’re great musicians and I love their writing. And to actually write a song with them was fun.” So fun in fact that Springfield feels the song could be a true contender for a possible first single. “It came out really great,” Springfield said. “Butch Vig produced it with Dave, and they really felt the song came out great and we’re thinking it could be one of the lead-off songs for (the soundtrack).” With respect to Sound City, Springfield recorded many albums there throughout his career and can’t wait to see Grohl’s finished film. “Dave’s one of those guys with a deep musical history and really knows what happened there,” Springfield shared. “It’s going to be big. He’s got all these grand ideas, and he’s got the power now to do that kind of stuff. I think it’s a great idea.” Grohl’s Sound City documentary has been a year in the making and he has high hopes for it, saying, “it could be the biggest, most important project I’ve ever worked on.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/corey-taylor-working-with-dave-grohl-sound-city-documentary/” title=”Corey Taylor Dishes on Working With Dave Grohl for ‘Sound City’ Documentary” align=”center”]

Foo Fighters Officially Announce Hiatus

Larry Busacca, Getty Images Frontman Dave Grohl  has officially announced that  Foo Fighters  will indeed be taking an extended hiatus. There’s no word on when Foo Fighters will play a show or record an album again, with Grohl himself writing, “I was serious. I’m not sure when the Foo Fighters are good to play again.” As we recently  reported , Grohl told a New York City crowd during his band’s set at the Global Citizen Festival on Saturday (Sept. 29) that Foo Fighters have no additional shows planned. “We’re not making a big deal out of this, but this is it,” stated Grohl. “We don’t have any more shows after this. This is it. We don’t have any ones after this. This is the show where we play as many songs as we can in a short period of time because honestly, I don’t know when we’re gonna do it again, but this is the perfect place to do it right now tonight.” Now, Grohl elaborates further in a post on Foo Fighters’ Facebook page: Hey everyone… Dave here. Just wanted to write and thank you all again from the bottom of my heart for another incredible year. (Our 18th, to be exact!) We truly never could have done any of this without you… Never in my wildest dreams did I think Foo Fighters would make it this far. I never thought we COULD make it this far, to be honest. There were times when I didn’t think the band would survive. There were times when I wanted to give up. But… I can’t give up this band. And I never will. Because it’s not just a band to me. It’s my life. It’s my family. It’s my world. Yes… I was serious. I’m not sure when the Foo Fighters are going to play again. It feels strange to say that, but it’s a good thing for all of us to go away for a while. It’s one of the reasons we’re still here. Make sense? I never want to NOT be in this band. So, sometimes it’s good to just… put it back in the garage for a while… But, no gold watches or vacations just yet… I’ll be focusing all of my energy on finishing up my Sound City documentary film and album for worldwide release in the very near future. A year in the making, it could be the biggest, most important project I’ve ever worked on. Get ready… it’s coming. Me, Taylor, Nate, Pat, Chris, and Rami… I’m sure we’ll all see you out there… somewhere… Thank you, thank you, thank you… Dave [button href=”http://loudwire.com/foo-fighters-best-of-you-top-21st-century-hard-rock-songs/” title=”Foo Fighters: Top 21st Century Hard Rock Songs” align=”center”]

Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Daughter Design ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’ T-Shirt

Kevin Winter, Getty Images Foo Fighters frontman  Dave Grohl is getting some serious daddy-daughter points by signing on to design a ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’ t-shirt with his daughter Violet. Audio Ink reveals that the shirts are aimed at the younger demographic, and the tee designed by the Grohl father-daughter team (shown below) features three of the ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’ characters drawn and colored by Violet against a white t-shirt backdrop. You can also make out a faintly drawn character with an emo haircut and devil horns with a halo hovering overhead, which might be the work of Violet’s dad. The shirt is just one of many created by musicians and/or their offspring. Rocker Jack Black created a shirt with his many facial expressions revealed in various colors against a green t-shirt backdrop, while the Tenacious D singer and his son Sam teamed up on a “Brobee” t-shirt with a white backing. The Flaming Lips ‘ Wayne Coyne, Devo ‘s Mark Mothersbaugh, actor Jon Heder and rapper Biz Markie have also created special shirts for the ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’ line. You can check out all of the ‘Yo Gabba Gabba’ t-shirts here . Foo Fighters Deliver Classic Rock Favorites for Music Midtown Set

Frederick M. Brown / Justin Sullivan, Getty Images The Foo Fighters freshened things up by digging into the past with several classic rock covers Friday night (Sept. 21) during their headlining set at Atlanta’s Music Midtown festival. The event also gave them the opportunity to reprise their frequent cover of ‘Bad Reputation’ with the song’s originator, Joan Jett , who had played earlier in the day. The fans were treated to a healthy dose of the band’s ‘Wasting Light’ album early on, with ‘White Limo,’ ‘Rope,’ ‘Arlandria,’ ‘These Days,’ and ‘Walk’ among the first nine tracks of the night. But after that and such well placed hits as ‘All My Life,’ ‘The Pretender,’ ‘My Hero,’ and ‘Learn to Fly,’ the band mixed things up with their first cover of the night – Van Halen ‘s ‘Everybody Wants You.’ The blistering guitar work and audience reaction made this one of the highlights of the evening, as the Foo Fighters showed that even on someone’s else’s material, they’re a band on top of their game. Next up in the covers catalog was the group’s take on Pink Floyd ‘s ‘In the Flesh?’ The track has been a favorite cover over the past year or so with Taylor Hawkins leading the vocals rather than Dave Grohl . The last two covers of the night also leaned to the classic rock side, with Dave Grohl leading the band through the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers classic ‘Breakdown’ first. With its moody beat, the Petty classic allowed the Foo Fighters a bit of a breather from their adrenaline fueled set. However, the mid-tempo break was quickly alleviated when Grohl and company introduced Jett. The singer, who has appeared several times with the Foo Fighters during the support of their latest album and even joined the band on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman,’ reprised the collaboration of ‘Bad Reputation’ for the Atlanta audience. With that performance bringing the audience to their feet, the Foo Fighters finished out the night with their longtime show closer, ‘Everlong.” Watch Foo Fighters Cover Van Halen’s ‘Everybody Wants Some’ Watch Foo Fighters and Joan Jett Perform ‘Bad Reputation’ [button href=”http://loudwire.com/foo-fighters-frontman-dave-grohl-downplays-reports-of-band-hiatus/” title=”Next: Foo Fighters Downplay Hiatus Talk” align=”center”]
