Def Leppard’s ‘Pyromania’ Turns 30

Mercury Records The 1980s were well under way by January 1983 – even mathematical geniuses like us can figure that out – but when it came to defining the look, the sound and the vibe of the ’80s, there’s no arguing Def Leppard ’s third album, ‘Pyromania,’ released 30 years ago today (Jan. 20), played a major role. In a year that would see Quiet Riot’s No. 1 album, ‘Metal Health,’ signal hard rock’s unlikely emergence as one of the decade’s most commercially dominant music genres, Def Leppard’s success would reach epic proportions. Now, Leppard’s talent and drive to succeed notwithstanding, few would dispute the claim that the true architect behind ‘Pyromania’s’ inevitable triumph was producer Robert John ‘Mutt’ Lang, whose studio wizardry had allowed him to deliver hit album after hit album in recent years, most notably AC/DC’s seismic ‘Back in Black.’ In 1981, Lang had taken Def Leppard under his wing by producing their equally stupendous, but significantly rawer ‘High ‘n’ Dry’ album; but he truly pulled out all the stops for ‘Pyromania,’ demanding nothing less than perfection from the band and even taking matters into his own hands when necessary – including a few co-songwriting credits and using a drum machine in place of drummer Rick Allen. Controversial as these decisions might seem today, they worked, and beginning with the February release of ‘Pyromania’s’ first single, ‘Photograph,’ the hard-touring Brits would gradually conquer America. Three additional singles and music videos (‘Rock of Ages,’ ‘Foolin’,’ and ‘Too Late for Love’) assaulted the charts before year’s end; their slick, sonically manicured pop metal anthems combining with Leppard’s photogenic good looks to drive a remarkable 6 million copies of ‘Pyromania’ into American households. The album has since been certified Diamond for 10 million units shipped. More importantly in the grand scheme of all things hard rock, this irresistible audio-visual combination became a blueprint quickly adopted by gaggles of up-and-coming bands (not to mention the savvy music industry executives who signed them), all aspiring to concoct the next ‘Pyromania.’ That’s why, beginning in January 1983, ’80s hard rock would almost always be created in Def Leppard’s image, as heard and seen on ‘Pyromania.’ Watch Def Leppard’s ‘Rock of Ages’ Video

Oblivion, ‘Reclamation’ (End of World Version) – Exclusive Video Premiere

All Shall Perish guitarist Ben Orum announced his sudden departure from the band on Dec. 12. Citing his family life and desire to be an attentive father, Orum felt the amount of touring with All Shall Perish would affect his personal life too greatly. However, Orum’s passion for music remains in tact, as he now handles bass duties for death metal band Oblivion, who are unveiling a music video for the song ‘Reclamation’ exclusively here on Loudwire. Deemed the ‘End of the World Version,’ Oblivion’s new video for ‘Reclamation’ delivers an apocalyptic theme just in time for fans to experience before the world actually ends later today. Oblivion definitely didn’t phone it in when it comes to their ‘Reclamation’ video, as proven by some captivating visuals crumbling city centers and full-on nuclear disasters. “This is our second video from our upcoming debut album, ‘Called to Rise,’” vocalist Nick Vasallo tells us. “This is also the first video to feature our two new members: Ben Orum (ex-All Shall Perish) and Victor Dods (from Hacksaw to the Throat, R.I.P.). The director, Brandon Hunt, made a special ‘End of the World’ version for all our fans just for today. Enjoy.” Although Orum has moved from guitar to bass after leaving All Shall Perish, his technical abilities are still acutely spotlit within ‘Reclamation,’ as are the talents of his fellow Oblivion band mates. Check out the debut of Oblivion’s music video for ‘Reclamation’ in the player below, and pre-order the band’s debut album, ‘Called to Rise’ (packaged with a t-shirt for only $10 total) by clicking here . Suffocation Unleash Track ‘As Grace Descends’ From 2013 Album ‘Pinnacle of Bedlam’

Nuclear Blast Brutal death metal architects Suffocation are set to release their seventh full-length album, ‘Pinnacle of Bedlam’ on Feb. 15, but fans won’t have to wait another two months to hear new material from the band. Suffocation have just unleashed the new track ‘As Grace Descends,’ and spoiler alert: It’s very heavy. After the departure of drummer Mike Smith, there were some big shoes to fill behind the kit. Thus, Suffocation made an incredibly wise decision in recruiting Dave Culross of Malevolent Creation. Culross has drummed from Suffocation in the past, blasting away on the band’s masterful 1998 EP, ‘Despise the Sun.’ “You will definitely hear ‘Despise the Sun’ shining through on this record,” Culross told us in our recent interview with the band. Not only because of my playing on it, but the grooves in some of the stuff that we did are very similar to the grooves in ‘Despise the Sun,’ and I think that’s what will people are gonna characterize between the two albums … you’ll hear the accents in the blasts, a lot of fast double bass; definitely reminiscent of ‘Despise the Sun.’” ‘As Grace Descends’ showcases a more crisp and powerful production standards, which offers an interesting dichotomy as Suffocation bring a more raw sense of composition to the track. Vocalist Frank Mullen is also noticeably straight-forward in his performance, as he keeps his gutturals low while focusing on the pronunciation of his lyrics. Introduce yourselves with ‘As Grace Descends’ in the player below, and whatever you do, only perform the classic Frank Mullen hand chop if you’ve warmed up first, as you will likely break your wrist otherwise.
