Jason Merritt (2) / Ethan Miller, Getty Images We know the talented lineup of musicians going into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the 2013 induction class, and now we have details on a number of special guests that will honor the inductees at the Rock Hall ceremony. Prog-rock veterans Rush will be inducted by Foo Fighters ‘ Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins during the April 18 ceremony. Grohl, in particular, has spoken publicly in the past about his love for Rush and how crucial they were to his teenage years. He told Rolling Stone , “It was, like, woah — drums! You could be, like, the leader, then take over the world.” But as much as he loved Rush, he also says he had to cover his fandom due to their “questionable” cover art. He recalled, “On the back [of the album], they’re all in white silk, one dude is in a kimono, and the other has these gnarly Cameron Diaz disco pants where the seam is perfectly [lined] in the middle of both of his balls. I didn’t tell anybody that I liked this band because of that dude’s f—in’ nuts! I was afraid my friends would beat me up.” In addition to Grohl and Hawkins, there have been several more confirmed guests as John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr. will perform in honor of blues legend Albert King. Mayer will provide the induction speech. Don Henley has been chosen to induct singer-songwriter Randy Newman. Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson will perform in honor of late disco queen Donna Summer, while Heart and Public Enemy’s special guests will be named at a later date. The ceremony takes place at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on April 18. Tickets will be available for the general public via Ticketmaster beginning Feb. 1. 2013 Rock on the Range Festival The 2013 Rock on the Range lineup has been unveiled and it’s packed with must-see bands. Rock on the Range will celebrate its seventh year of festival madness with perhaps its best lineup to date. The three-day event will feature Soundgarden , Alice in Chains , Smashing Pumpkins , Korn , Stone Sour , Lamb of God and many more. The 2013 installment of the Rock on the Range festival will take place May 17-19 in Columbus, Ohio, at the Columbus Crew Stadium. Korn will be welcoming former guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch to join them onstage. The band has already booked some dates with Head in Europe, but this is their first U.S. show of the year so far that will feature the axeman. “Head is back!!,” says Korn’s Jonathan Davis . “Rock on the Range is going to start it all off!! Get ready, we are going to hit it hard!!” Another band to pay close attention to for Rock on the Range is Lamb of God. Although LoG are confirmed for the festival, vocalist Randy Blythe is scheduled to appear in Czech court on Feb. 4 for his controversial manslaughter case. Depending on the outcome, there is a question of whether Lamb of God will indeed be able to remain on the bill. Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains is excited about the band’s slot in this year’s Rock on the Range, saying, “We’re really looking forward to returning to Rock on the Range with a batch of brand new killer Alice tunes to play for everyone!” Additionally, Bush singer Gavin Rossdale offers, “Bush are thrilled to be playing Rock on the Range with such great bands. Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com After what could be described as a tumultuous split with his former band Three Days Grace , Adam Gontier made his first solo debut since leaving the band at the ‘Rock For Recovery’ benefit show at the Gramercy Theater in New York City on Jan. 17. When Artisan News asked the singer about his departure from Three Days Grace and how he felt, Gontier had nothing but positive things to say. “I feel great about it; this is a new chapter of my life,” he said in the video interview (watch below). “Three Days Grace for me ran its toll. We were a band for 20 years and things don’t last forever. You have to move on and do what’s right for you and for own well-being. For me it was just the end of the road.” He didn’t leave it at that though; he took some time to wish the band well without him. “I wish the guys all the best,” Gontier said. “I wish them all the best and no hard feelings but for me it was time to move on and into a new chapter of my life.” These statements come in contrast to recent remarks by Gontier, in which he criticized the creative direction of Three Days Grace. As we reported recently, Gontier said, “The music really wasn’t coming from the heart. I can say that on the record ‘Transit of Venus,’ there’s maybe one or two songs that actually do come from my heart … Quite a bit of it just adds up to the fakeness of the whole industry and how you’re writing hits for other people.” That new chapter of Gontier’s life includes an upcoming solo album that is already in the works. Gontier shared that he’s already written many new songs for the disc that should be out some time in 2013. “It’s a matter of basically tweaking songs that have already been written and recording them, getting them done,” Gontier explained. “I would think within a few months I should have something done.” As Gontier continues to pursue his solo career, Three Days Grace are gearing up for their co-headlining tour with Shinedown. With Gontier gone from the band, Three Days Grace have recruited singer Matt Walst to sing on the tour, who coincidentally just happens to be the brother of bassist Brad Walst. The tour kicks off in February. Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Green Day fans got their first taste of the band’s ‘¡Quatro!’ documentary late last year when VH1, MTV2 and Palladia aired a highlights special featuring clips from the film. Now fans will get to see ‘¡Quatro!’ in its entirety when it screens at the upcoming X Games competition being held in Aspen Jan. 26. In addition to the various sports, the X Games has launched their own film showcase in recent years to provide those attending with other forms of entertainment and Green Day’s ‘¡Quatro!’ will be one of the featured movies at the Wheeler Opera House. The movie itself documents the massive undertaking that was the completion of Green Day’s album trilogy. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong says in the trailer for the film, “This is the first time in 20 years that we are actually inviting people into the process. This is not a fully thought out thing yet,” to which an unseen band members says off screen, “This is like sending the baby down to the corner to buy cigarettes.” The timing was right for a project like this because it showed the band at their most vulnerable. As Armstrong recalls, “We were so used to presenting ourselves before, but this time we had nothing. It was back to that ‘prove it to me’ [attitude].” In coordination with the screening, the band will also be answering questions. Warner Brothers / Publicity Photo He was one of the more entertaining characters in rock music and now the short life and times of late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott will be featured on the big screen. After spending the last year getting the cast and crew lined up, pre-production has begun on the biopic. According to Bravewords.com , filmmaker J.R. Getches shot the first-ever dramatic portrayal of the musician on Jan. 14, with actor-singer Rob Liotti handling the role of Scott. The director says, “The story of Bon Scott is a classical tragedy. He travelled across the world, made his mark and then died too young. He was a misfit who found his place in rock music and became immortal pursuing his dream. This is a story worth telling.” While Liotti has been cast in the lead role, the remaining actors for the film have not been revealed. However, it is known that Malcolm and Angus Young, Mark Evans, Phil Rudd and Margaret “Silver” Smith are among the roles that have been cast. Liotti reportedly shed 40 pounds in order to prepare to play Scott. At present, High Voltage Productions Pty. are currently seeking an independent production house to help them complete their vision, but they have stated that the film’s trailer will help serve in fundraising and give a visual perpetuity to investors and the public. Todaro / Jason Merritt / Larry Busacca, Getty Images The ‘Sound City’ documentary gave Dave Grohl a chance to work with a who’s who of music, while also showcasing the legendary Sound City studio and using the board that’s been responsible for creating so many great albums. Among Grohl’s collaborators were Paul McCartney and Corey Taylor , who appear on the first two singles from the ‘Sound City’ soundtrack, and the musician-turned-director has spoken more about both pairings. Joining Taylor on Los Angeles’ ‘ Kevin & Bean ‘ morning show, Grohl stated that he was a little starstruck by his ‘ From Can to Can’t ‘ collaborator. He explains, “When I first met [ Slipknot ‘s] Corey [Taylor] or the guys from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, those are bands that I really love and I spent a lot of time listening to their music and when you meet that person in the flesh, you get a little nervous.” As for Taylor and his take on working with Grohl, the singer explained, “You want to talk about a checkmark off my bucket list, I’ve been wanting to work with Dave forever. When he invited me to be a part of this movie, it was like, ‘Oh, by the way, I’ve got this music, would you like to put this together?,’ and I just went, ‘(scream) Duh, I’m already in the car on my way.’” Arguably the biggest name on the album is Paul McCartney, and Grohl considers himself lucky to have ingratiated himself over the years to where he can just call the musician. Of the collaboration on ‘ Cut Me Some Slack ,’ Grohl recalls, “As we were filming all these performances, I was like, ‘Hey dude, why don’t you come down and jam?’ He’s like, ‘OK.’ So he comes down and brings THE BASS that he’s played for 40 years and the Les Paul that there’s only four of in the world and then he brings this guitar made out of a cigar box. It’s called a Cig Fiddle, and he’s like, ‘Oh, I think I’ll play this. Why don’t you go play the drums?’ … and we just jammed. We wrote this song in about an hour and we recorded it.” He added that it was McCartney that spurred the decision to debut it at the 12-12-12 benefit concert, suggesting that they play the song that he and Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear had jammed out eight months prior. One thing that’s a common denominator in how records were made at Sound City and for the movie’s soundtrack was the human element. Grohl says, “[What it’s all about is] the human element of music and what it’s like to just get together with a person and write a song in a room in a day and it doesn’t have to be perfect, but that’s how the magic happens.” The ‘Sound City’ documentary made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival Friday night (Jan. 18) and the movie will screen in theaters beginning Jan. 31. Kevin Winter, Getty Images Rage Against the Machine ‘s Tom Morello has continued his video series where he answers fan questions and in his latest installment he revealed a long-secret piece of trivia from the band’s history — the identity of the naked guy in the ‘How I Could Just Kill a Man’ video. In the clip, the offending naked guy is briefly shown standing next to singer Zack de la Rocha, and more than a few fans have asked how that piece of video footage found its way into the clip and why. Morello revealed, “It was a friend of ours who toured with us named MJ Plenty and at the time on that particular tour we were doing this grim, I wouldn’t call it hazing, but we had this outstanding $250 per diem money that was always sitting on the desk. And then someone in the band or someone in the crew would come up with a different task and if you did the task you got the $250.” The guitarist recalls that Plenty accepted the bet, which for that night entailed him going onstage naked, with a few other conditions that needed to be met to achieve the goal. Morello says, “He’s not just naked, he’s naked with his wiener tucked. It you do it frame-by-frame, you’ll see that he has a wiener-tuck going on. And I’m not sure if he’s singing the Maynard [James Keenan] part of ‘Know Your Enemy’ or if he’s just onstage during that part of ‘Know Your Enemy’ while Zack is singing to him, but part of the deal was that he couldn’t laugh. He couldn’t break character, he had to be … stoic. He did it. He got the $250 and he is forever immortalized in the ‘How I Could Just Kill a Man’ video.” With Rage pretty much on break at this point after reissuing a 20th anniversary edition of their debut album last year, Morello is finding other things to keep him occupied. The guitarist says he’s currently working on a new Nightwatchman album and will play a show at New York City’s Lincoln Center Feb. 16.
