Idiom-Movement

Dirt Track Records 2014 Included free with the March 2014 issue of Metal Hammer, “Movement” (which may have initially been released back in 2013) looks to be the latest from Exeter-based “alternative metal” band Idiom. I say “looks” because there are no other references to other recordings on the group’s Facebook page. Online, and indeed on iTunes, the album “We Can’t All Be Superheroes” (from November of 2010) is shown, but beyond that it’s anybody’s guess as to what else this band has done since first forming back in 2005. As for the second phrase in quotation there (“alternative metal”) that’s their description and not mine. For this lot (and this is none too surprising given Metal Hammer’s containing obsession with the better left dead genre!) is prime-time nu metal with just the faint hint of metalcore. Said to be influenced by the likes of Faith No More, Korn and Deftones the band comes across as more of the later and not more of the former. Descriptions have been made to the likes of Rage Against The Machine and System Of A Down and both tags are more then a bit fair. Admittedly this English metal band has a solid front-man in Matt Sharland and his companions (guitarist Kris Gibbs, bassist Grant Knight and drummer Dan Harrison) are none-too-shabby. The problem is music like this has been played to death and really it should remain DEAD and BURIED! There is nothing worse they hearing bands like this that have the HEAVY part down, but then are extremely limited because they refuse to allow their guitarist to let loose. That’s always been a issue for me when it comes to both nu metal and metalcore (the lack of solos) as you end up with (essentially) nothing more then a HEAVY rhythm guitarist! That said the band does have potential. You can sense that. But why restrain yourself? Why settle for being a second rate nu metal/metalcore band when you could easily take your influences (which would also seem to be the likes of Papa Roach, Korn, Ill Niño, P.O.D., DevilDriver and even Pantera) and with a few twists and turns of the dial turn them upside down and inside out creating something truly wicked and fresh? If that were to happen, and this band suddenly developed the urge to thrash their heads straight off(!), then I would ENTHUSIASTICALLY endorse this English act. For now though I just feel like shrugging my shoulders and saying “Eh”….

Korn’s Jonathan Davis Receives U.S. Flag Flown in Afghanistan From Air Force Supervisor

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Korn frontman Jonathan Davis is an avid supporter of the U.S. military, as evidenced with his continued USO meet-and-greets and performances for U.S. servicemen and women and his participation in the recent ‘ Wounded Warriors ‘ short film. The singer’s support continued during a special meeting set up at the ShipRocked event in late November. United States Air Force Shift Supervisor Michael Bowser attended the cruise performance, where he was finally able to meet his hard rock hero and present him with a flag flown over an Afghanistan base on Sept. 11, 2012. Video footage of the presentation may be seen below. Bowser said he also collected flags for Five Finger Death Punch and Sevendust , who were also among his favorite bands, to present to them, as well. He told Davis, “Hopefully this can give back to you guys what you’ve given to me, because if it wasn’t for rock music I wouldn’t get through deployment.” A moved Davis responded, “I know lots of people and I know the s— you all are going through. This is amazing. This will definitely be displayed at our studio.” Just last fall, Davis was presented with the uniform of Marine Lance Cpl. William H. ‘Billy’ Crouse IV by his brother Ryan Rothman. Crouse was killed during a bombing in Afghanistan. It’s expected that Bowser’s flag will be displayed alongside Crouse’s uniform and other gifts that band has received from the military over the years. Brian ‘Head’ Welch on Possibly Joining Korn for Full U.S. Tour + New Album: ‘Anything is Possible’

Rick Diamond, Getty Images Former Korn guitarist and current Love & Death frontman Brian ‘Head’ Welch has slowly been working his way back into the Korn camp ever since his surprise appearance at the 2012 Carolina Rebellion Festival, where Welch performed ‘Blind’ with the rest of Korn. Now, with Head set to join Korn at Rock on the Range in Ohio and several European dates this year, the possibility of Welch’s permanent return to Korn is becoming more and more real. Along with Welch’s surprise ‘Blind’ performance and Korn’s new tour dates featuring the guitarist, fellow strummer James ‘Munky’ Schaffer told us during a Loudwire  exclusive interview that he wanted ‘Head’ back in the band eventually. In a new interview with spoken with Rolling Stone, ‘Head’ shares his excitement for his upcoming tour dates with Korn, along with his desire to return to the band. “Everyone is broken in this world,” Welch tells Rolling Stone . “There’s so much divorce, hate and unforgiveness. For people to see this [Welch touring with Korn], I think it’s just really uplifting. I never thought it would happen, and I’m not sure they did either. The fans just love it, because a lot of the fans back in the day were like, suicidal, and from broken homes and abuse. They looked up to us like their family. And to see their family split up was hard on them. To get it put back together, there is a joy around the people who care about it.” When asked about the possibility of a full-on U.S. tour with Korn, Welch seemed open to the idea while remaining realistic. “We’re going slow,” Welch says. “We’re hanging out when I’ve got time, but I’ve got my album out, and they’re busy doing their stuff. But I’d say anything is possible right now.” Finally, when Welch was asked about recording another album with Korn, the guitarist simply states, “Again, I’d say anything is possible.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/fan-granted-wish-to-spend-a-day-with-korn/” title=”Korn Meet Fan for ‘Make-A-Wish’ Foundation” align=”center”]

Pantera vs. Korn – 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl, Quarterfinals

2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl, Quarterfinals We’ve got two distinctively different sounding hard rock tracks advancing to the quarterfinals of the Loudwire Rock Bowl in Pantera ‘s thrashy favorite ‘F—ing Hostile’ entering the arena against Korn ‘s style-shifting rocker ‘Freak on a Leash.’ Pantera’s ‘F—ing Hostile’ barely made it out of the first round with 53 percent of the vote against stiff competition from Drowning Pool’s ‘Bodies.’ But make no mistake, Pantera are definitely ready to hype up their listeners with this classic. You can just envision an NFL defensive end unleashing untold destruction in the backfield thanks after getting amped to the pent-up energy of this track. Korn, meanwhile, had things a little easier with ‘Freak on a Leash’ outlasting System of a Down’s ‘Psycho.’ Earning just shy of 59 percent of the final tally, the band is ready to unleash their ‘Freak’ on Pantera, much like an onrushing cornerback blitz. So which track deserves to advance as the better football anthem? That’s for you to decide. Vote for either Pantera’s ‘F—ing Hostile’ or Korn’s ‘Freak on a Leash’ between now and this coming Wednesday (Jan. 30) morning at 10AM ET in the poll below. Brian ‘Head’ Welch + Ray Luzier Enjoy Korn Collaboration at NAMM Convention

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire / Ethan Miller, Getty Images There are a lot of happy people out there rejoicing that Korn ‘s former guitarist Brian “Head” Welch is playing some shows with the band again. But before all the festivals and summer touring kicks off, there was a Korn preview of sorts at the NAMM Convention in Anaheim. Korn’s drummer Ray Luzier was performing as part of a Sabian-backed jam session with bass and guitar greats Billy Sheehan and George Lynch. During a break in the action, Luzier grabbed the microphone to reveal the performance’s special guest. He told the audience, “I’m really, really extremely happy to announce that Brian ‘Head’ Welch, the original guitar player of Korn, will be touring in Korn this summer, for the tour, European, States and all.” And with that, he introduced Welch who was in attendance at the event. The guitarist took the stage for a brief performance of Korn’s breakthrough hit ‘Blind,’ while visibly enjoying his surroundings. During the lead-in on the song, Welch turned to George Lynch and told the crowd, “I wouldn’t even be playing guitar if it wasn’t for that dude,” which got a chuckle from the longtime Dokken and Lynch Mob axeman. Korn recently revealed that Welch would be joining them for their European trek and it was announced this week that he was also pulling double duty at this year’s Rock on the Range festival, playing with Korn as well as his current band Love and Death . The summer dates mark the first extended touring for Welch with Korn since 2004. System of a Down vs. Korn – 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl, Round 1

There is such a thing as too much adrenaline pumping and this 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl pairing will definitely hype you up. We’ve got the frenetic and somewhat schizophrenic System of a Down favorite ‘Psycho’ squaring off against Korn ‘s monstrous rocker ‘Freak on a Leash.’ In this fast-paced, need-it-now world there’s probably no shortage of football players that can identify with the “ psycho, groupie, cocaine, crazy ” world that Serj Tankian sings about in the band’s ‘Toxicity’ album favorite ‘Psycho.’ Regardless of the lyrical content, the speedy rocker has plenty of energy to spare. The other side of this battle is Korn’s ‘Freak on a Leash,’ a monstrous track about someone ready to unleash the demon inside. There’s just something about the spirit of competition that changes people, and that “freak” can get unleashed as soon as the whistle blows. So which of these tracks gets you more amped up for football? Listen to both System of a Down and Korn below, then vote in our 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl poll. Voting in Round 1 concludes Sunday, Jan. 27, at 11:59PM ET, so vote now and vote often before the deadline arrives.
