Avatar, ‘Smells Like a Freakshow’ – Exclusive Video Premiere

Vimeo Get ready to rock as Avatar are unleashing the video for their current single, ‘Smells Like a Freakshow’ and Loudwire is bringing you the exclusive premiere. The Swedish rockers have provided an interesting character study for the video, as each of the band members get to play the role of tormentor and the tormented in the Johan Carlen-directed video. The band tells Loudwire, “The video illustrates inner conflict in an explicit manner, using abuse of unjust power in different contexts. The lyrical themes of downfall, embracing of decadence and failed attempts to escape are pointed out by the fact that ultimately the bad guys win.” Though all of the members go through a rough conflict with themselves in the video, singer Johannes Eckerstrom has perhaps the most compelling battle. One version of himself stands tall and confident, whipping and taunting the other version of himself, which is slumped over and chained to a post before attempting to escape. ‘Smells Like a Freak Show’ is featured on the band’s fourth studio album and first proper American release, ‘Black Waltz.’ Eckerstrom says of their sound, “We’re in this weird field, caught in a triangle between extreme metal, rock ‘n’ roll and what can be described as Avant-garde.” But even with that eclectic nature, the singer says he feels the band has hit their stride. He adds, “We finally came to understand what a good groove is all about and what a great fit it was for our sound.” The ‘Black Waltz’ album is currently available for purchase here . Dave Grohl: Foo Fighters ‘Have Really Awesome Big Plans for the Next Album’

Justin Sullivan, Getty Images Foo Fighters may be on a break, but fans shouldn’t fear about their future. First of all, relationships seem to still be intact with the band’s members turning up at the musician’s recent ‘Sound City’ concert to help him promote his documentary. And secondly, Dave Grohl himself says that he’s got a plan in place for his return to the band. Grohl tells MTV News , “I have the music for the next record and we’re going to start working on it once we finish doing all this stuff. We have really awesome big plans for the next album and I’m really excited about it.” That being said, the break will last a while longer as Grohl has been playing drums with Queens of the Stone Age and recently detoured into the studio to join up-and-coming band RDGLDGRN. For RDGLDGRN, it was a matter of right place, right time. They tell NME that they met at the Sound City complex while Grohl was working on his documentary and they struck up a friendship. Speaking about Grohl’s involvement in their currently-untitled debut album, they added, “[He] knocked out half our record like some kind of machine.” The group has reportedly asked Grohl to tour with them later this year, but nothing is confirmed as of yet. At present, the ‘Sound City’ documentary is Grohl’s main concern. The film just debuted at Sundance with screenings scheduled for theaters across the country beginning Jan. 31. Grohl’s Sound City Players will also play a Jan. 31 show at Los Angeles’ Palladium in coordination with the screenings. Corey Taylor Performs ‘From Can To Can’t’ Live With Dave Grohl’s Sound City Players

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com / Kevin Winter, Getty Images Dave Grohl may have successfully upstaged his own ‘Sound City’ documentary screening at Sundance when he followed it up with a concert for the ages. The live spectacle featured his Sound City Players and included 17 different guest musicians playing over three hours of music at the Park City, Utah event on Jan. 18. While Grohl’s Foo Fighter bandmates were a major part of the evening acting as the backbone for his band, the stage was a revolving door of special guests from Slipknot’s Corey Taylor to Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielson and Grohl’s former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic . For the classic music lovers in the crowd Stevie Nicks and John Fogerty also joined Grohl onstage, making the evening one to remember. Fan filmed footage from the event is starting to surface and one of the highlights is Corey Taylor’s performance of the new song ‘From Can To Can’t.’ ‘From Can To Can’t’ was penned specifically for the ‘Sound City’ movie soundtrack dubbed ‘Sound City – Real To Reel,’ due out on March 12. Joining Taylor on the official recording for this tune were Rick Nielsen and former Kyuss bassist Scott Reeder with Grohl handling drum duties. Watch video of the live performance of ‘From Can To Can’t’ here . Although recreating a concert of that magnitude may be hard to reproduce, Grohl and his Sound City Players are going to try it one more time when the documentary makes it’s Los Angeles, Calif. premiere on Jan. 31. 10 Best Shinedown Songs

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com It's pretty much impossible to turn on rock radio without hearing one or more Shinedown songs. In the 10 years since they released their debut album, the Florida rockers have proven themselves to be one of the most reliable hit-makers of the 21st century. They've churned out hit radio tracks even as they expand their range beyond hard rock to include textured mid-tempo tracks and even tender ballads. With their latest album, 'Amaryllis,' Shinedown have continued their hit-making streak with more chart-topping singles. So, we give props to the band with our list of the 10 Best Shinedown Songs: ? 10 'If You Only Knew' From: 'The Sound of Madness' (2008) ? ? Sunny, airy acoustic guitars shimmer throughout this surprisingly lighthearted and upbeat track from Shinedown's third album, 2008's 'The Sound of Madness.' If it weren't for the pounding drums, you could almost call this an adult contemporary ballad, what with the epic proclamations of love, the strings, and, wait, are those bells? Listen to 'If You Only Knew' ? ? 9 'Bully' From: 'Amaryllis' (2012) ? ? There was plenty of aggression bubbling over on Shinedown's 'Amaryllis' album, beginning with the lead single, 'Bully.' The issue-oriented track dealt with some of the troubles going on in schools these days, with singer Brent Smith taking the opportunity to encourage those being bullied to stand up for themselves. The anthemic track is quite empowering with a sing-along chorus as well. Listen to 'Bully' ? ? 8 'The Crow & the Butterfly' From: The Sound of Madness' (2008) ? ? Guitarist Zach Myers' epic, melodic lead guitar work further ratchets up the intensity throughout the second half of this already stormy song from 2008's 'The Sound of Madness.' Reportedly, the song is about a mother whose young son dies, but the lyrics also mention the pair “getting high as outer space” together, so let's hope this is a friend they're talking about. Listen to 'The Crow & the Butterfly' ? ? 7 'Fly From the Inside' From: 'Leave a Whisper' (2003) ? ? You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and that's especially true for rock bands. So, the opening song on Shinedown's 2003 debut 'Leave a Whisper' needed to kick some butt and tell people what they're about quickly. The band wastes little time doing just that here, mixing hard rock riffs with a heightened sense of dynamics and a huge, anthemic chorus. Listen to 'Fly From the Inside' ? ? 6 'Devour' From: 'The Sound of Madness' (2008) ? ? Eschewing their more recent tendencies towards more dynamic music, Shinedown let it rip old-school style on the double-barreled opening track and first single from 2008's 'The Sound of Madness.' Reportedly an anti-love song to then-president George W. Bush, the track features lead singer Brent Smith railing against a clueless leader who is suffocating his own empire due to his own greed. Listen to 'Devour' ? ? 5 'Enemies' From: 'Amaryllis' (2012) ? ? What better to work out your aggressions than in song? That's the path Shinedown followed with 'Enemies,' an in-your-face confessional between warring sides. Not only does the track rock, but there's a certain amount of swing brought to the track by drummer Barry Kerch as well. This one's great to get your blood boiling. Listen to 'Enemies' ? ? 4 'Second Chance' From: 'The Sound of Madness' (2008) ? ? Supposedly, Shinedown themselves weren't very big fans of this tune, the appropriately titled second single from 'Sound of Madness,' when they first wrote it. Luckily, they gave the track a — wait for it — second chance, as it ended up being their biggest hit to date, a platinum selling smash that reached the charts on a wide variety of radio station formats. Listen to 'Second Chance' ? ? 3 'Save Me' From: 'Us and Them' (2005) ? ? Shinedown sing of a drug addict looking for salvation on this, the first single from their 2005 sophomore album 'Us and Them.' The repetitive, somber opening bass line helps to capture the mindset of a junkie living in day after day world of pills, needles and spoons, unable to muster the strength to break free on their own. Listen to 'Save Me' ? ? 2 'The Sound of Madness' From: 'The Sound of Madness' (2008) ? ? Shinedown breaks out their best Metallica impression on this riff-heavy slice of metal, which served as the title track to their third album. Lead singer Brent Smith, in particular, drops his voice down a notch and adds some menace, sounding eerily like James Hetfield as he calls out self-pitying so called “rebels” who really are just avoiding responsibility. Listen to 'The Sound of Madness' ? ? 1 '45' From: 'Leave a Whisper' (2003) ? ? Even if you ignore the fact that this song was the band's first major single, and therefore an important introduction to their brand of drama-filled melodic hard rock, this tune's powerful message about living each day to the fullest makes it one of the top Shinedown tracks. There was some controversy about the song's gun-related lyrics, but if you listen they hardly glorify violence — instead using the weapon as a metaphor for a person staring down big changes in their life.
