Avenged Sevenfold vs. Shinedown – 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl, Round 1

Photos by Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com It’s an inspirational message versus an in-your-face proclamation in this 2013 Loudwire Rock Bowl matchup. This first round pairing sees Avenged Sevenfold attempting to ‘Seize the Day’ against Shinedown , who appear ready to ‘Devour’ their new foes. Though a little on the softer side than what we usually get from Avenged Sevenfold, ‘Seize the Day’ is no less powerful in message. The inspirational track warns the listener to “ Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost, ” a sentiment that isn’t lost on today’s NFL player. With such a shortened season as compared to other sports, it’s important to make every moment count and Avenged Sevenfold definitely connect with a football theme in the song. Shinedown’s ‘Devour,’ meanwhile, has that great opening build just waiting to explode. As Brent Smith sings about taking it and taking it and taking it over and over again, it’s no wonder that by the time we get to the chorus he’s ready to devour, proclaiming, “It’s your final hour.” If that doesn’t speak to the mentality and pressure of an NFL player, what does? So there you have it — Avenged Sevenfold versus Shinedown. Which band advances? Your vote will decide. Listen to both tracks below, then vote in the poll provided. The Black Dahlia Murder Confirm 2013 Vans Warped Tour Run

Metal Blade The Vans Warped Tour — it’s not just for skater punks and emo kids anymore. In recent years, the traveling festival has increasingly added some harder rocking bands and the Black Dahlia Murder have just been announced as participants in the 2013 trek. As they’ve done in recent years, organizers for the festival are announcing a new batch of bands weekly until revealing the full lineup sometime next spring. The announcements are only a couple of weeks in at this point, but already the Black Dahlia Murder will join I See Stars , Like Moths to Flames and Stick to Your Guns as some of the hardest rocking acts the festival has seen. Black Dahlia Murder vocalist Trevor Strnad says of their participation: “We in the Black Dahlia Murder look forward to seeing you and your friend’s fancy haircuts this summer at the Van’s Warped Tour. I think it’s safe to say that all of us in TBDM have attended this tour at various points and have fond memories of this great American punk rock freak show. This time, we shall be the freaks … the sore thumb poking at your eyeball. We are proud to be the fastest, craziest, and most evil band that has ever played Warped Tour … hundreds of bands will enter, one band will leave. Us. We will emerge from the rubble like the giant cockroach men we are. See ya this summer… let’s get warped!!!” The 2013 Vans Warped Tour gets under way June 15 in Auburn, Wash., and runs through an Aug. 4 finale in Houston, Texas. 2013 Vans Warped Tour Dates: 6/15 — Auburn, Wash. — White River Amphitheatre 6/16 — Portland, Ore. — Expo Center Parking Lot 6/19 — Chula Vista, Calif. — Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre 6/20-1 — Pomona, Calif. — Pomona Fairplex 6/22 — Mountain View, Calif. — Shoreline Amphitheatre 6/23 — Ventura, Calif. — Ventura County Fairground at Seaside Park 6/26 — Las Cruces, N.M. — NMSU Practice Field 6/27 — Mesa, Ariz. — Quail Run Park 6/28 — Las Vegas, Nev. — TBA 6/29 — Salt Lake City, Utah — Utah State Fairpark 6/30 — Denver, Colo. — Sports Authority Field at Mile High 7/3 — Noblesville, Ind. — Klipsch Music Center 7/5 — Toronto, Ontario — The Flats – Molson Canadian Amphitheatre 7/6 — Darien Center, N.Y. — Darien Lake Performing Arts Center 7/7 — Holmdel, N.J. — PNC Bank Arts Center 7/9 — Virginia Beach, VA — Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach 7/10 — Columbia, Md. — Merriweather Post Pavilion 7/11 — Mansfield, Mass. — Comcast Center 7/12 — Camden, N.J. — Susquehanna Bank Center 7/13 — Uniondale, N.Y. — Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum 7/14 — Hartford, Ct. — Comcast Theatre 7/16 — Scranton, Pa. — Toyota Pavilion 7/17 — Burgettstown, Pa. — First Niagara Pavilion 7/18 — Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio — Blossom Music Center 7/19 — Auburn Hills, Mich. — The Palace 7/20 — Tinley Park, Ill. — First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre 7/21 — Shakopee, Minn. — Canterbury Park 7/23 — Kansas City, Kan. — Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre 7/24 — Maryland Heights. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea Shows Support for Suspended UCLA Basketball Star

Stephen Dunn, Getty Images There’s no doubt that Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea is definitely an avid basketball fan, and that his loyalties lie with his Los Angeles home teams. On Friday night, he won over numerous UCLA fans while donning a homemade t-shirt in support of suspended basketball star Shabazz Muhammad as he performed the national anthem. Donning a baby blue t-shirt that read “Free Shabazz Muhammad” written in black marker, the musician was greeted with a warm reception. Muhammad, one of the top ranked freshmen in the nation, was declared “indefinitely ineligible” by the NCAA just prior to the team’s first game as a result of alleged extra benefits received during his recruitment. Flea tweeted , “Free Shabazz Muhammad. NCAA is out of control. This is absurd.” According to Yahoo Sports , Flea’s shirt mirrored the thoughts of some of the team’s fans, as several students were noticed donning “Free Shabazz” shirts with the player’s likeness on the front. The shirt likely eased a few tensions for the bassist as well, as he took classes at UCLA’s crosstown rival USC a few years ago. Slayer’s ‘Raining Blood’ Used in Halloween Themed Google Chromebook Commercial

Sony Holy Slayer , we’ve got yet another mainstream commercial using metal music to sell their product. This time, Google has used the Slayer anthem ‘Raining Blood’ for a Halloween-themed commercial for the company’s new Chromebook. The commercial is mostly text-based, and reads, “For little devils, for scaring off viruses, for spooky-fast startup, for an undead battery, for horror movie marathons, for no fear of crashes, for no phantom files, for no software nightmares, for a fun size, for no haunting hassles; the $249 laptop from Google for everyone.” This is the second time in a short while where Slayer has been used in a commercial. In September, ESPN used the band’s logo for comedic contrast for an ad featuring the seemingly nerdy SportsCenter commentator John Clayton, who wears a Slayer shirt while showcasing a ‘Reign in Blood’ poster in his “bedroom.” Still, the reigning champion of heavy metal commercials is the History Channel , when they used Suffocation ‘s ‘Bind Torture Kill’ to promote their ‘Dark Ages’ programming. What do you think of the use of Slayer’s music for a Google commercial? Is it funny? Does it work well? Is it a sellout move? Let us know your opinion in the comments section below. ESPN Commentator John Clayton Stars in Slayer-Inspired SportsCenter Commercial

We at Loudwire may be more in tune with heavy metal than sports, but that being said, we’re still pretty psyched that football season is back once again. The same goes for ESPN commentator John Clayton, who turns out to be a pigskin-loving metalhead in a new SportsCenter commercial. John Clayton is a respected sportswriter who joined the ESPN team in 1995. Clayton probably wasn’t one to dance with the
