Vocalist of the Year – 2012 Loudwire Music Awards

The human voice comes in many forms, and in our list of nominees for 2012 Vocalist of the Year, an incredibly wide range is covered. Along with your classic clean style of singing, we’ve got musicians who wail, scream, yell and, in a few cases, create evil gutturals. In another Loudwire Music Awards category that pits veterans against debuting artists and everything in between, we’ve got 10 singers who have helped shape the sound of 2012. Check out the nominees and be sure to vote in the poll below: Bobby Blitz, Overkill Overkill’s 2012 album, ‘The Electric Age’ just barely missed our 2012 Top 10 list, but there’s no way that the vocals of Bobby Blitz could be left out of our 2012 awards. Blitz delivered a diamond-sharp performance for the album, as well as one of the sickest high notes ever unleashed during the intro of ‘Wish You Were Dead.’ ? Chino Moreno, Deftones As one of modern rock’s most iconic voices, Deftones frontman Chino Moreno strung together another masterful group of vocal tracks to tape on ‘Koi No Yokan.’ There are few modern rock bands as original and reliable as Deftones, and Moreno makes it simple to understand why. ? Corey Taylor, Stone Sour/Slipknot Corey Taylor had himself a massive 2012, both with Slipknot and Stone Sour. During Slipknot’s headlining spot on the 2012 Mayhem Fest, Taylor’s voice was in fine form. OnStone Sour’s 2012 album, ‘House of Gold & Bones – Part 1,’ Taylor shows a different yet equally powerful side to his voice. ? Chris Cornell, Soundgarden Still legendary, still solid. Chris Cornell has been a vocal force in the rock world for nearly three decades, and the Soundgarden frontman delivered once again with ‘King Animal.’ Along with the success of Soundgarden, Cornell went around the world for a string of solo tour dates. ? David Gold, Woods of Ypres The deep and haunting vocals of the late  David Gold will be sorely missed in the metal community. As Woods of Ypres’ central figure, Gold played guitar and drums on ‘Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light,’ but his singing is the standout feature of the brilliant album. ? Emily Armstrong, Dead Sara Having exploded onto the scene in 2012, Dead Sara ‘s Emily Armstrong brings soul and ear-splitting aggression to the up-and-coming band. Although displayed prominently within the single ‘Weatherman,’ Armstrong’s versatile voice is captivating throughout the band’s entire self-titled album. ? Joe Duplantier, Gojira With warmongering screams, narrative gritty singing and a little French twang, Gojira vocalist Joe Duplantier left a massive stamp on 2012. His vocals captivate the listener throughout the band’s 2012 full-length, ‘L’Enfant Sauvage,’ and steered Gojira in a direction which would greatly shape 2012. ? Lzzy Hale, Halestorm Yet another breakout artist of 2012, Halestorm frontwoman Lzzy Hale made a massive impact in the world of hard rock. Whether listening to ‘The Strange Case of…’ or seeing the band live, Lzzy Hale’s vocal prowess is undeniable. ? ? Myles Kennedy, Slash/Alter Bridge Myles Kennedy made some major strides in 2012. Along with providing vocals for Slash on his latest “solo” album, Kennedy was also featured in Alter Bridge’s 2012 live album, ‘Live at Wembley.’ The singer also stepped in to deliver a stellar performance during Guns N’ Roses’ set at the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. ? Randy Blythe, Lamb of God Nobody has had a year like Randy Blythe . The vocalist hit soaring heights with Lamb of God’s ‘Resolution’ album, but also had to undergo the hardship of being imprisoned for five weeks in the Czech Republic. Regardless, Blythe’s gutturals remain terrifying, like serpentine constriction coiling tightly around the listener. ? Voting for the 2012 Loudwire Music Awards closes on Jan. 15 at 11:59 PM EST. Corey Taylor Expresses Interest in Dance Album + Justin Bieber Collaboration

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com As a member of Slipknot and Stone Sour , you would expect Corey Taylor ‘s interests to lie on the hard rock and metal side, but the vocalist says he also has other musical interests as well, which might take him in the direction of recording a dance album someday. In a question and answer session with Revolver (excerpted by NME ), Taylor reveals that he’s looking to do “something funny and sarcastic,” and would be interested in a dance record. He explains, “I’m not talking ’70s dance and not that tired f—ing dubstep bulls—. I want to make it something that’s got that old school feel to it, but with a modern twinge. Just get ridiculous with it. I’ve already got a name for myself — the Boogie Knight, and I want to call the first album ‘The Boogie Knight Rises.’” Taylor also raised a few eyebrows by showing his respect rather than disdain for a fan-made mashup video that featured Slipknot’s ‘Psychosocial’ with Justin Bieber ‘s ‘Baby.’ The vocalist says, “I know Justin wasn’t responsible for it, but I just thought it was so cool. Everybody thought I’d be pissed about it, but I was blown away. Like, who the f— thought this would be a good idea? But I give him respect. He’s a very talented kid and he goes above and beyond for his fans.” Taylor reveals he was recently in Baltimore while Bieber was in Washington, D.C. and he reached out to the pop star to come out to his reading for an acoustic version of the mashup, but Bieber was visiting a children’s hospital at the time and the scheduling didn’t work. After his comments about Bieber went public, Taylor did notice a bit of backlash. He explained in a Facebook posting , “It’s entertaining reading the comments about me and the Biebs. I think everyone needs to calm down — it’ll never happen. Haha. HoGaBcontinues.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/corey-taylor-says-slipknot-are-on-hiatus/” title=”Next: Corey Taylor Says Slipknot are ‘on Hiatus'” align=”center”]

Megadeth Frontman Dave Mustaine Chalks Up Obama Re-Election Comments as ‘Stage Fodder’

Mary Ouellette, SheWillShootYou.com Barack Obama has been re-elected president and Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine is still an American citizen. The rocker, who made headlines earlier this year suggesting he might move out of the country if the president was re-elected, says his comments were primarily “stage fodder.” The vocalist tells Atlantic City Weekly about his Obama commentary in front of a Singapore audience, “A lot of that was stage fodder … I was just there marveling how beautiful Singapore is and I started thinking about how our nation is changing and I don’t know if we can handle all of the taxation. I know years ago that in England the taxes got so out of control that people left and I can see it happening here. There could be a mass exodus here.” Mustaine went on to add, “There are quite a few musicians who are blessed enough to be making $250,000 or more a year and they will be taxed. I think what will happen is that bands will be dying left and right. What’s happening now is that everything America has been built on will be destroyed.” Regardless of what happens politically, Mustaine says, “I think life will continue on. We’re a strong nation, no matter who is in the White House.” The vocalist has been quite the lightning rod in the past year for some of his comments made onstage and in interviews. However, Mustaine said in a recent interview he’s learned his lesson about voicing his thoughts. “You can’t joke around very much anymore without people misinterpreting what you’re saying,” says the vocalist. “You know, I probably should have said things differently. I probably should’ve skipped that altogether … I learned a valuable lesson from all of this stuff.” Recently, Megadeth have been revisiting their ‘Countdown to Extinction’ album on tour, and Mustaine says the feelings now are similar to when the album was first recorded. He explains, “What’s similar about now and then is that it’s a difficult time in our country. There’s extreme tension now and there was extreme tension then. Maybe that’s why ‘Countdown to Extinction’ is still resonant today.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/best-megadeth-songs/” title=”Next: 10 Best Megadeth Songs” align=”center”]

Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe to Learn if He’ll Stand Trial for Criminal Charges by November’s End

Bradley Kanaris, Getty Images Lamb of God ‘s Randy Blythe  will learn in the coming weeks whether or not he’ll have to stand trial on criminal charges in the Czech Republic, as the case file has been sent to the prosecutor for review. Czech news site iDNES.cz reports that police have completed their investigation into the alleged manslaughter case and recommended that the vocalist be indicted and ordered to return to the Czech Republic to stand trial. The prosecutor in charge of the case will now review the facts and determine whether there is enough criminal liability to pursue the case further. A spokesperson for the Municipal Public Prosecutor’s Office in Prague, Stephanka Zenklova, stated that a decision on the matter will be made before the end of November. The singer was arrested this summer for his alleged involvement in the death of an audience member who sustained an injury after being thrown off the stage at their show. The injury didn’t immediately present itself, and the victim passed away a month later. Blythe spent 37 days in a Czech prison before finally being set free on bail. Shortly after arriving back in the U.S., the vocalist stated that he planned to return to face the charge and that the victim’s family had the right to some answers. He added, “I want my name cleared. I have to go around the world and tour, you know. That’s what I do. I’m not going to hide here. I’m an innocent man. I’m going to go to court and see what happens.” [button href=”http://loudwire.com/best-lamb-of-god-songs/” title=”Next: 10 Best Lamb of God Songs” align=”center”]

Former Iron Maiden Singer Paul Di’Anno Flips Out at Heckler Yelling ‘Bruce Dickinson’

Paul Di’Anno: Official Facebook Although Bruce Dickinson is widely regarded as the definitive vocalist of Iron Maiden , fans of the band still hold much respect for Paul Di’Anno , who sang on the albums ‘Iron Maiden’ (1980) and ‘Killers’ (1981). However, at Di’Anno’s recent tour stop in Ukraine, the vocalist got into an altercation after being heckled by an audience member. Di’Anno has been making music since his departure from the band, along with performing songs from Maiden’s first two albums around the world. The 54-year-old Di’Anno has claimed that he will be bidding fans farewell , with 2013 to be his final year as an active touring musician. In what could possibly be his final Ukrainian show, Di’Anno found himself in a war of words after being heckled with “Bruce Dickinson” chants by a member of the audience. Mocking the broken English of the heckler, Di’Anno replied, “I am number one vocal Bruce Dickinson,” at around the 1:45 mark in the video below, adding, “I’m sorry, I don’t sing opera,” before comically singing the chorus of the Maiden staple ‘Run to the Hills.’ “If you like Bruce Dickinson; go home. Listen to his records. Why did you come and buy a ticket, motherf—er? This is real punk, man. This is what made Iron Maiden, not the money-making machine. If you don’t like it, go f— yourself.” Di’Anno continues, “Better still, you wanna fight? You’ll be sorry. I’ll rip off your head and s–t down your neck, you motherf—er.” Di’Anno threw some homophobic slurs at the Ukrainian fan, who tried to smooth things over with Di’Anno throughout the rest of his set. Di’Anno seemed to forgive the fan as the show came to a close with a cover of ‘Blitzkreig Bop’ by Di’Anno’s “favorite band,” the Ramones.
