Metallica Jam Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ Live at 2012 Voodoo Music + Arts Experience

Chuck Armstrong, Loudwire Over the weekend, Metallica headlined the 2012 Voodoo Music + Arts Experience in New Orleans after original headliners Green Day were forced to back out. Due to Billie Joe Armstrong ‘s recent trip to rehab, Metallica stepped in on short notice, but took a moment to pay tribute to their friends in Green Day by performing a part of ‘American Idiot’ onstage (as seen in the video below). During Metallica’s two-hour set, frontman James Hetfield addressed the crowd. “We’re Green Day, just a little taller,” joked Hetfield. “They’re getting it sorted out, hopefully they get it fixed because the world needs them.” After paying tribute to the band, Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich played the intro and first verse of Green Day’s ‘American Idiot,’ letting the audience sing loudly back at them as they played festival karaoke. Metallica’s Kirk Hammett recently spoke with Fuse about filling in Green Day’s spot. “We got a message about [in early October] asking us if we’re able to fill in for Green Day, because Billie Joe was having some issues,” said Hammett. “We discussed it between the four of us and we all said, ‘Yeah, it would be great thing for us to do and it would also be great to help out Billie Joe, ’cause he’s a friend of ours and we love Green Day. If we can help them out in any way possible, we’re always happy to do it, ’cause we love those guys. It’s actually an honor for us that they approached us and asked if we can fill in.” Check out our full coverage of Metallica’s performance at the 2012 Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and watch the band play ‘American Idiot’ in the video below. Metallica Rock as Replacements for 2012 Voodoo Festival

YouTube Metallica did not expect to be spending time in New Orleans in late October, but the band shook off any rust that might have accumulated in the last couple of months to deliver a blistering set Saturday night (Oct. 27) for the Voodoo Arts + Music Experience. The band, who signed on only after Green Day had to bow out of headliners, had a couple of weeks to prepare, and they delivered an 18-song set that did not disappoint. The group opened the show with the older favorites ‘Hit the Lights’ and ‘Master of Puppets,’ and also rocked through their standards of ‘Welcome Home (Sanitarium),’ ‘Fade to Black,’ ‘One,’ ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls,’ and ‘Enter Sandman.’ ‘Creeping Death,’ ‘Battery,’ and set closer ‘Seek and Destroy’ wrapped up a powerful performance. The set was one of few that fans will see in the coming months. The band has concluded their ‘Death Magnetic’ touring, and has been focusing their time on a 3D film before spending considerable studio time working on their next album. However, the group has announced several festival shows for 2013. For those who didn’t catch Saturday’s stream of the full performance , check out pro-shot video of the first three tracks from the set — ‘Hit the Lights,’ ‘Master of Puppets,’ and ‘Holier Than Thou’ — below. Green Day Producer: Billie Joe Armstrong Could Be in Rehab for a While

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Last month after an onstage breakdown during the iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong checked into rehab for substance abuse. Now, Warner Bros. Records Chairman and producer Rob Cavallo is opening up about the potentially long road ahead for Armstrong and the band. Commenting on the seriousness of Armstrong’s condition, Cavallo told Rolling Stone that “his rehab is no joke” and that Armstrong is “under medical supervision for a while to get him clean.” Green Day already canceled their headlining spot at the Voodoo Music and Arts Experience at the end of October ( with Metallica filling in for them ), but the band has additional tour dates kicking off in November. Judging by Cavallo’s comments, more cancellations may be coming. “His doctors are still evaluating,” Cavallo said. “All I can say is I don’t know if we’ll see him before or after Christmas. It’s basically undetermined when he’ll be back.” Bassist Mike Dirnt also recently spoke out about Armstrong’s current state of mind in an interview with BBC Radio 1 citing that the pressure of promoting three albums at one time weighed on all of them. “With hindsight 20/20, it was a tremendous undertaking,” Dirnt admitted. “Although we were having fun, we didn’t take our nose out of the book for a long time. I think it catches up with you a little bit. We definitely just jumped off a moving train.” He also said that Armstrong’s breakdown wasn’t a complete shock. “There were signs of things hitting the fan,” he said. “We hadn’t slept in forever and Billie had definitely had the worst of it.” He continued, explaining, “He’d been going through his own struggles . . . We were there with him, but you can only handle things on your own . . . At the end of the day, when we got off the road, the most important thing was my friend’s life.” Here’s wishing Armstrong a speedy recovery and a quick return to the stage. Kirk Hammett Excited for Metallica’s Headlining Set at Voodoo Music Festival

Kevin Winter, Getty Images On the heels of learning that Metallica will be taking over Green Day ‘s headlining gig at the 2012 Voodoo Music + Arts Experience in New Orleans, Loudwire had the chance to catch up with ‘Tallica axeman Kirk Hammett . This will be Metallica’s first concert in New Orleans since 2008, so needless to say there is a lot of excitement around the announcement . With Green Day pulling out of the festival due to lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong ‘s entrance into rehab, Hammett looks at the concert as more than just filling an open slot. “I’m very honored that we’re able to help our friends in Green Day,” he says. “I wish Billie Joe the best of luck, we’ll do anything to help them out. It’s great to be able to help him out.” What can fans expect from the show? “It’s such a recent development, so we haven’t really discussed what we’re going to do yet,” Hammett explains honestly. “New Orleans during Halloween, I’m really excited about that. I love New Orleans, I love the voodoo folklore, I love the vampire folklore. It should be pretty interesting.” With the recent release of Hammett’s book that chronicles his horror movie memorabilia collection, ‘ Too Much Horror Business ,’ there’s no doubt that fans are in for a treat on Halloween weekend in New Orleans. The 14th annual Voodoo Music + Arts Experience kicks off on Oct. 26 and runs through Oct. 28. Metallica will be headlining the Oct. 27 date. Metallica Officially Replace Green Day as 2012 ‘Voodoo Music + Arts Experience’ Headliners

Metallica.com After pop-punk legends Green Day chose to withdraw as headliners of the 2012 ‘Voodoo Music + Arts Experience’ due to frontman Billie Joe Armstrong entering rehab for substance abuse, the band’s replacement has just been named. The replacement headliners just happen to be the most commercially successful metal band in history, Metallica . Now that Green Day have  pulled out of the festival, this will mark Metallica’s first New Orleans performance since 2008, and Metallica now join Neil Young, Jack White , Die Antwoord, Skrillex and many more artists at the ‘Voodoo’ festival. Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming festival date. “We are excited to be part of our first ever Voodoo Music + Arts Experience,” says Ulrich. “Our good friends and fellow Bay Area residents Green Day had to unfortunately cancel their plans to be there, so we are more than happy to fill in for them in our own unique way. We’re hoping we can fill those very large shoes and do them proud.” Founder and producer of ‘Voodoo,’ Stephen Rehage also shared his excitement, along with relief in a new press statement. “After a hectic few days – and sleepless nights – having Metallica, one of the world’s greatest bands agree to perform at Voodoo in the place of Green Day, only two weeks before the festival, feels pretty surreal at the moment – like being part of rock & roll history in the making… something you will tell your grandkids about years from now,” says Rehage. “We are incredibly grateful to Metallica and their management team for supporting us in this unprecedented manner. I am sure Metallica’s performance at Voodoo will be remembered for many years to come.” The 2012 ‘Voodoo Music + Arts Experience’ will mark the 14th anniversary of the outing, and will be held on Oct. 26-28, with Metallica playing the Oct. 27 date. Green Day Bow Out of 2012 Voodoo Experience

Spencer Kaufman, Loudwire Green Day were planning to head up the 2012 Voodoo Music + Arts Experience over Halloween weekend, but given singer Billie Joe Armstrong ‘s recent entry into rehab for treatment of substance abuse issues, they’ve now bowed out of the performance. The timing has not been the best in the world for Green Day, as the singer’s meltdown at the iHeart Music Festival in Las Vegas and subsequent rehab announcement came just ahead of the release of the group’s ‘¡Uno!’ album. At the time, the band issued a statement apologizing for the incident at the Las Vegas event, revealing Armstrong’s decision to attend rehab, and regretfully announcing that some of their promotional appearances would be postponed as a result. Drummer Tre Cool issued the band’s statement on their exit from the Voodoo Experience. It read: Canceling shows is something we rarely do. We never want to let our fans down, and we are grateful for all of you being understanding during this time. Meanwhile, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience organizers, Rehage Entertainment, issued their own statement on the matter. It read: We, like everyone, were looking forward to having Green Day back at Voodoo. Their 2004 performance was one of the festival’s greatest. We are obviously disappointed in the news, but realize the health and well being of Billie Joe is the most important thing right now. We wish him and the entire Green Day family the best and offer them our full support. The Voodoo Experience will go on without Green Day. The festival runs Oct. 26-28 at New Orleans’ City Park. Even without Green Day, the lineup is pretty solid. Neil Young & Crazy Horse, the Avett Brothers , Justice, Silversun Pickups , AWOLNATION, Jack White , Skrillex , and Coheed & Cambria are among the top performers on this year’s bill.
